Book Illuminating the Particular

Download or read book Illuminating the Particular written by Christel T. Maass and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2003 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roman B.J. Kwasniewski, son of Polish immigrants, used his camera to document life in Milwaukee's Polish community during the early decades of the twentieth century. His images transform the particulars of everyday life at local businesses, in homes and classrooms, and at cultural, social, and recreational events into powerful depictions of the immigrant experience. With an introduction by well-known Milwaukee historian John Gurda, this book offers rare insight into the daily lives of a proud people struggling to maintain their heritage while living in a time of rapid change. While Kwasniewski's camera captured the sights and sounds of Milwaukee at the turn of the century from the perspective of a single ethnic group in a single neighborhood, his photographs resonate far beyond Milwaukee's Polish South Side. They illuminate the particulars of American life during the early decades of the twentieth century. "What we see, reflected in the distant mirror," says John Gurda, "is ourselves."

Book Classic Restaurants of Milwaukee

Download or read book Classic Restaurants of Milwaukee written by Jennifer Billock and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milwaukee may be known for beer, brats and custard, but the city's food history is even richer and tastier. At the Public Natatorium, diners supped at an old public pool and watched a dolphin show at the same time. Solly's, Oriental Drugs and others nurtured a thriving lunch counter culture that all ages enjoyed. Supper clubs and steakhouses like Five O'Clock reigned supreme. And we can't forget about the more illicit side of Milwaukee meals, like the mafia hangouts and a local fast-food chain with a mysterious resemblance to a national brand. Pairing the history of classic restaurants with recipes of favorite dishes, author Jennifer Billock explores both the well-known and the quirkier sides of Milwaukee's dining past.

Book excerpt: Not to be confused with Milwaukee's "South Side," the City of South Milwaukee is in fact a separate and independent community, with a rich and colorful history all its own. It is this spirit of self-sufficiency that has long been a hallmark of South Milwaukee, going back to 1835 when the area was first settled and continuing through the city's remarkable transformation from a small rural settlement to a bustling industrial suburb. Since 1892, the city has been home to Bucyrus International, one of the world's leading manufacturers of heavy excavation equipment. Bucyrus provided employment to South Milwaukee citizens, allowing the city to grow and add more businesses and city services, and to feel an even more confident sense of independence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born in Virginia, in 1832, near Charlottesville, in the beautiful valley of the Rivanna river. My father was a white man and my mother a negress, the slave of one John Martin. I was a mere child, probably not more than six years of age, as I remember, when my mother, two brothers and myself were sold to Dr. Louis, a practicing physician in the village of Scottsville. We remained with him about five years, when he died, and, in the settlement of his estate, I was sold to one Washington Fitzpatrick, a merchant of the village. He kept me a short time when he took me to Richmond, by way of canal-boat, expecting to sell me; but as the market was dull, he brought me back and kept me some three months longer, when he told me he had hired me out to work on a canal-boat running to Richmond, and to go to my mother and get my clothes ready to start on the trip. I went to her as directed, and, when she had made ready my bundle, she bade me good-by with tears in her eyes, saying: "My son, be a good boy; be polite to every one, and always behave yourself properly."
