Both of these groups I shall briefly consider, as well as the circumstances under which some of them were written, so far as it is necessary for a correct understanding of them, and perhaps may dwell some what upon the merits and limitations of the form in which he wrote. In what I say of the Sonnet in gen eral, I shall invoke the aid of the poets themselves who have written such verse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sonnets of Milton It was also reserved for Milton to establish in England the more familiar and classical forms of the Italian Sonnet, which had been much neglected, although not wholly and entirely, by his predecessors. The Sonnet is here our special theme; and its use by English poets cannot well be considered without reference to its subjects and methods in the country of its origin. It first appeared in Italy in the twelfth century; it has continued there in unbroken use till the twentieth and the Italian poetry which has been cast into the sonnet form is without bound or limit; infinite in its copiousness, and impressive in its value and beauty. One of the most famous of poets, Petrarch, made it peculiarly his own, and became the master of many disciples but the sonnet extends far outside the Petrarchian range. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Minor Poems of John Milton I have, therefore, condensed, for this volume, the His torical Introduction to my volume of Selections from Paradise Lost by omitting all the portions not necessary to the interpretation of the poems here included, and have added a general Introduction to the Minor Poems and also a special Introduction to each poem, together with critical notes, which aim to direct attention to the poems as literary productions. The various Introduc tions should be studied with some care, as a preparation for the study of certain classes of literature. Then the poems should be made the object of study, the references to the Historical Introduction and the Glossary being used only when the failure of the pupil's memory ren ders it necessary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Shorter Poems of John Milton: Including the Two Latin Elegies and Italian Sonnet After I had for my first years, by the ceaseless diligence and care Of my father, (whom God recompense) been exercised to the tongues, and some sciences, as my age would suffer, by sundry masters and teachers, both at home and at the schools, it was found that whether aught was imposed me by them that had the overlooking, or betaken to Of mine own choice in English or other tongue, prosing or versing, but chiefly by this latter, the style, by certain vital signs it had, was likely to live. I began thus far to assent to an inward prompting which now grew daily upon me, that by labour and intent study, (which I take to be my portion in this life), joined with the strong propensity of nature, I might perhaps leave something so written to aftertimes as they should not willingly let it die. I applied myself to fix all the industry and art I could unite to the adorning Of my native tongue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Sonnets For twenty years of Milton's life, embracing the period, namely, of his middle life, from the year in which he wrote Lycidas, 1637, until the year in which we know he was continuously at work upon Paradise Lost, 1658, he wrote no original English verse, except in the form of sonnets. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lyric and Dramatic Poems of John Milton The text follows the first editions as closely as modern spelling, capitalization and punctuation per mit. In punctuation I have tried to be logical rather than uniform. The proper order of the poems is not an easy matter to determine: a chronological order cannot be established with certainty. In this edition those poems that seem to belong together have been placed together, and within the groups the poems come in the order in which they were written, so far as that can be ascertained. Book Milton s Shorter Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Milton s Shorter Poems Classic Reprint written by John Milton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Shorter Poems The aim of this edition of Milton's Shorter Poems is, primarily, to supply the pupil, by means of notes and questions, the necessary information and stimulus for the understanding of the poems studied. No attempt has been made to produce a learned book. There is already an abundance of such editions of Milton; and the present editor does not believe that the apparatus of the scholar is necessary or even desir able for the high school pupil. Consequently there are few references to other authors, and the necessary explanations are made as brief as possible. That the pupil may be helped as much as possible, the notes are put at the bottom of the page where they will be immediately available; and many questions are inserted to stimulate thought and enable the student to work, out the meaning for himself. The teacher has also been kept in mind. The questions at the bottom of the page, primarily for the pupil, will suggest many other questions to bring out the meaning of the text; the questions at the back of the book will suggest ways of bringing out the larger aspects of the poems as to form and subject matter; while the outlines will serve both teacher and pupil as a convenient framework for study of the relations of the different parts of each poem. The editor assumes that the teacher will be familiar with other editions of these poems. Huntington's (ginn Neilson's (scott, Foresman and Trent's (long man, Green Co.) editions are especially useful and have been referred to freely in preparing this edition. One sug gestion has been taken from Parrott and Long's English Poems from Chaucer to Kipling. Of the complete editions of Milton's English poems, Masson's, the so-called standard, is too conjectural in its notes to be trusted, Browne's (clarendon Press Series) is perhaps as satisfactory as any other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sonnets of Milton The only task which confronts an editor of Milton's Sonnets is exegetical. They present no serious difficulties in the text, and it has been thought unnecessary to encumber them with an apparatus criticus, which could give no more than unimportant and insignificant variations in spelling, obvious misprints, or readings rejected by the poet himself. The difficulty of many lines arises from their allusiveness, which it has been sought to make clear by citation of relevant passages from other works. Milton wrote from a full mind, abundant in reminiscence, and all his writing is woven close: sometimes the brevity of an allusion to literary or traditional knowledge is the only cause of an uncertain interpretation. For the text there are three sources - the Editions of 1645 and 1673, and the original Manuscript, containing many of the Sonnets, although not all, in Milton's own hand or those of amanuenses, which is preserved in the Library of Trinity College, Cambridge, and has been reproduced in fac-simile. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lycidas, Sonnets Yet Milton himself regarded them as no more than the first fruits of his genius he had, in his own estimation, shattered the leaves of his poetic laurels before the mellowing year. In April, 1638, he set out on ajourney to Italy, the classic land of poetry and art. He had spent some months in Florence and Rome, and was staying in Naples when the sad news of civil war reached him; be resolved to turn his face homewards, for, he says, 'i thought it disgraceful; while my fellow - countrymen were fighting for liberty, that I should be travelling abroad for pleasure. He retraced his steps in a leisurely manner, and arrived in England in August, 1639. It was on this journey that he wrote his Italian Sonnets, and shortly after his return he wrote that elegy on the death of his friend Charles Diodati, to which allusion is made in the notes on Lycidas. III. In the end of 1639 Milton took lodgings'in London, and hoped to betake himself to his favourite studies with a view to still further maturing himself for the production of some great English poem. But this hope was not fulfilled. The Scots had rebelled against Episcopacy, and the Puritans of England (of whom, both by nature and upbringing, Milton was one) were all in sympathy with them. The famous Long Parlia ment had already resisted in a number of ways the unconstitutional conduct of Charles I., and had decided to sweep away the abuses of the Episcopal Church. How best to do this was the important question, and to the answering of this Milton first devoted himself with all the enthusiasm of his truly religious spirit.
