Book The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton

Download or read book The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton written by John Milton and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2009-10-28 with total page 1410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Milton is, next to William Shakespeare, the most influential English poet, a writer whose work spans an incredible breadth of forms and subject matter. The Complete Poetry and Essential Prose of John Milton celebrates this author’s genius in a thoughtfully assembled book that provides new modern-spelling versions of Milton’s texts, expert commentary, and a wealth of other features that will please even the most dedicated students of Milton’s canon. Edited by a trio of esteemed scholars, this volume is the definitive Milton for our time. In these pages you will find all of Milton’s verse, from masterpieces such as Paradise Lost–widely viewed as the finest epic poem in the English language–to shorter works such as the Nativity Ode, Lycidas,, A Masque and Samson Agonistes. Milton’s non-English language sonnets, verses, and elegies are accompanied by fresh translations by Gordon Braden. Among the newly edited and authoritatively annotated prose selections are letters, pamphlets, political tracts, essays such as Of Education and Areopagitica, and a generous portion of his heretical Christian Doctrine. These works reveal Milton’s passionate advocacy of controversial positions during the English Civil War and the Commonwealth and Restoration periods. With his deep learning and the sensual immediacy of his language, Milton creates for us a unique bridge to the cultures of classical antiquity and medieval and Renaissance Christianity. With this in mind, the editors give careful attention to preserving the vibrant energy of Milton’s verse and prose, while making the relatively unfamiliar aspects of his writing accessible to modern readers. Notes identify the old meanings and roots of English words, illuminate historical contexts–including classical and biblical allusions–and offer concise accounts of the author’s philosophical and political assumptions. This edition is a consummate work of modern literary scholarship.

Book Contesting the Subject

Download or read book Contesting the Subject written by William H. Epstein and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stanley Fish opens the collection with a persuasive argument for the role of intention and biography. Michael McKeon, Gordon Turnbull, and Jerome Christensen are concerned with the late eighteenth--and early nineteenth-century English cultural discourse that gave rise to the nearly simultaneous emergence of literary biography, Romantic sensibility, and reflexive human consciousness. The essays by Alison Booth, Cheryl Walker, and Sharon O'Brien reveal that the recognition or lack thereof the biographical subject has received and remains both a problem and an opportunity for women writers and readers. The essays by Valerie Ross, Rob Wilson, Steven Weiland, and William Epstein pursue the question of difference and cultural reification in the theory and practice of a specifically American biography and biographical criticism.

Book Muses and graces serpents and sirens virgins wise and pure John Milton s other women

Download or read book Muses and graces serpents and sirens virgins wise and pure John Milton s other women written by Darío Gómez Escudero and published by Vision Libros. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Milton (1608-1674) is one of those authors who do not leave anybody impassive. Anyone who has read any of his poems or prose tracts is likely to either love or hate him, but very rarely do his readers remain indifferent to his words. The vast majority of books, essays and articles dealing with the gender issue have been made particularly with the eyes set on Eve. This interest in Eve is precisely why this book takes a different perspective. Namely, this work proposes a thorough look at Milton’s other women, so to speak. In other words, avoiding a direct analysis of Eve, what this work aims at is to search for any trace of feminine characters in some of Milton’s poetic and prose works and see their importance and relevance in Milton’s work as a whole. The author is a lecturer in several faculties of Iberian Studies in Warsaw, Poland. He has written two books in Spanish, namely, ”De Madrid a Varsovia” (2007) and ”Un dia cualquiera” (2011). He is also an active translator from Spanish into English and author os several learning courses.
