Book Milton and Liberty Classic Reprint

Download or read book Milton and Liberty Classic Reprint written by William Morison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton and Liberty Milton's political writings possess more than a biographical value - they have a message for our own time. The more democracy spreads the more it is to be desired that the people should be so inspired and guided that they will make a noble use of their freedom. Such inspiration and guidance are found pre-eminently in Milton. The people who follow his doctrine of liberty will make more of duties than of rights, and value rights mainly as the means of performing duties. They will use their power, not to compete with one another for material well-being or any private advantage, but for mutual service and the common good. Without such an ideal, democracy will only, as Mazzini has said, produce egotists who will carry the old passions and desires into. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Areopagitica: A Speech for the Liberty of Unlicensed Printing The notes accompanying this Edition were compiled for the use of those of my own pupils who are candidates for the Oxford Local Examinations: they are published because I know that the want of a school-edition of this treatise has been very generally felt. They are mainly taken from sources obvious and easily accessible, and make no pretensions to original or extensive research. I have endeavoured to make them as brief, as exact, and as complete as possible, bearing in mind, first the disinclination of young pupils to consult books of reference for themselves, however accessible; and, secondly the increasing number of students of English Literature to whom the Classical Dictionary is not a familiar book in daily use. Much, help has been received from the notes to Holt White's very elaborate Edition (London, 1819). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Paradise Lost This sonnet is one of the most' splendid acts of homage ever paid by one great poet to another. It was written during the great war of a hundred years ago, the struggle against the devouring am bitiou of Napoleon. It is dated 1802, a time of facile jubilation, no doubt, to those who did not or could not look ahead, but a time of utter gloom to one who, like Wordsworth, exalted the war as a holy war for great principles of Liberty and Good Faith. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Milton was not only the greatest English Renaissance poet but also devoted twenty years to prose writing in the advancement of religious, civil and political liberties. The height of his public career was as chief propagandist to the Commonwealth regime which came into being following the execution of King Charles I in 1649. The first of the two complete texts in this volume, The Tenure of Kings and Magistrates, was easily the most radical justification of the regicide at the time. In the second, A Defence of the People of England, Milton undertook to vindicate the Commonwealth's cause to Europe as a whole. This book, first published in 1991, was the first time that fully annotated versions were published together in one volume, and incorporated a new translation of the Defence. The introduction outlines the complexity of the ideological landscape which Milton had to negotiate, and in particular the points at which he departed radically from his sixteenth-century predecessors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Fame on the Continent Milton was mentioned, but not as a poet, by P. Costar in his Memoire des gens de lettres celebres des pays etrangers and the Comte de Comminges, Louis XIV's ambassador at the court of Charles II, made, in 1663, his famous report to his royal master to the effect that the arts and sciences had passed to France, and that, if there were any vestiges left in England, 'ce n'est que dans la memoire de Bacon, de Morus, de Bucanan et, dans les derniers siecles, d'un nomme Miltonius qui s'est rendu plus infame par ses dangereux cerits que les bourreaux et les assassins de leur roi'. The lexicographers, C. Funccius, G. M. Konig, C. Gryphius, and V. Paravicini, give Milton brief notices in their biographical works, but they know him only as a political agitator, and especially as the author of Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio, a book to which universal attention had been drawn on the Continent by the fact of its having been publicly burned at Paris and Toulouse. In 1697, Bayle honoured Milton by devoting to him three pages of his Dictionary, this being the only English poet mentioned in the work. Still, it is obvious that it was not Milton the poet, but Milton the political writer, in whom Bayle was interested, and he was content to repeat at second hand that Paradise Lost 'passe pour l'un des plus beaux ouvrages de poesie que l'on ait vu en anglais', Paradise Regained being 'not nearly so good'. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of John Milton Oua task. Is a grateful one - to write the history of a man who united in himself the two high and honour able'charaeters of patriot and Post. Such men are rarely to be met with. There is something too etherial in the feelings of the poet - something too inimitable in his views - to comport with that vivid perception of the common-place, every-day, localized circumo stances of life, that is essential to the heart's blood of the patriot. The poet, like the metaphysician, is too much given to generalizing, to have his mind very strongly impressed with the weight and value of ordinary and isolated facts. His mind sweeps through the aggregate of the incidents and circum stances that constitute the natural and social world, giving only just so much attention to the several parts of which it is made up, as is necessary to constitute a sublime picture 0 the mighty whole. Sueh a man can scarcely become a patriot. Lie must, indeed, possess enlarged and liberal feelings - his sympathies must be with the multitude of his fellow-men - the sight of injustice and oppression must ever render him uneasy; but to be a patriot, it is not enough that he mourn or rejoice, as social misery or happiness predominates; he must be so strongly impressed with the enormity of social evils so much alive to the duties of every citizen in the struggle to annihilate them, and so thoroughly satisfied of the causes out of which they arise, as to be impelled forward into the arena of political strife, and encounter, at the hazard of liberty and of life, the deadly hostility of the agents of evil. The man of sirong oetieal perceptions and feelings, is not likely to he thus mox ed and operated upon, by the individual circumstances of others. But these are exceptions, and when we meet with them, either amongst our contemporaries, or associated with the worthies of by-gone times, they command our edmir ing reverence, and almost idolatrous homage. Such a man was John Milton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Milton Milton's original intention was to have visited Sicily and Greece, but he says, The sad news of civil war coming from England called me back; for I considered it disgraceful that, while my fellow-countrymen were fighting at home for liberty, I should be travelling abroad at ease for intellectual purposes. From Naples he returned' to Rome, where he again spent two months, and arrived once more in Florence towards the end of February 1639. After a short excursion to Lucca, he set out for Venice, crossing the Apennines, and passing through Bologna and Ferrara. His residence in the island-built city was of short duration; there be shipped for England the rare and curious books which he had collected in his travels up and down the Peninsula. His course next lay through the fertile plains and famous towns of Lombardy, over the Pennine Alps, and along Lake Leman to Geneva, where he stayed for a week or two, to enjoy the society of the most learned professor of theology, John Diodati, uncle of his friend Charles, who had just recently died. Resuming his homeward journey, he passed rapidly through France, and landed in England about the beginning of autumn, after an absence of fifteen months. During all his wanderings his conduct had been blameless - worthy of him who thought no man should dare to be a poet whose life was not itself a poem. I take God to witness, he solemnly affirms, that in all those places where so many things are considered law. Ful, I lived sound and untouched from all pro igacy and vice, hav ing this thought perpetually With me, that though I might escape the eyes of men, I certainly could not the eyes of God. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Considerations Touching the Likeliest Means to Remove Hirelings Out of the Church: With a Preface on the Prose Writings of Milton John milton, undoubtedly One of the very greatest literary or nameute of his country, has owed his celebrity among us hitherto chiefly to his poetry. As a poet, he has merited more than his fame, high as it is. His Comus is the most perfectly beau tiful of dramatic poems; and his Paradise Lost, to say nothing of the extent to which it has contributed to human improvement, by the religious and moral sentiments which it contains, is con fessedly the prince of epics. But the prose works of Milton have as yet been very inadecpliately appreciated they have been won derfully little known. Ow many are there even among what ma be called the reading part of the community, who never heard, tih very recently at least, of Milton as a prose author at all? There are passages in the prose writings of John Milton which want only the form Of verse in order to their equalling, if not surpassing, as poetry, the most admired efi'usions of his genius in the Para dise Lost. But this is their smallest praise: they have merit of a. Difi'erent and, we will venture to add, of a higher order. They are instinct with the noblest spirit, and the most uncompromising principles of civil and religious liberty. Milton may be said to be the p ilosopher of freedom, as Bacon is of physical and mental science. He goes to the core of the subject. He consults only with reason and, especially with' reference to religious liberty, the Word of God. His writings (sure token of truth and greatness) are, after the lapse of nearly two hundred years, useful, applicable, and full of light to the existing generation of mankind. The world is yet onlyi'endeavouring to near his standard with slow, and timorous, and feeble steps. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Complete Poetical Works of John Milton Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Complete Poetical Works of John Milton Classic Reprint written by John Milton and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poetical Works of John Milton WE are aided in the study of Milton's life by the sharpness of line which separates the three main epochs of his history: his life of student ease, during which he was preparing himself with consecration for his poetic vocation; his life of public service, when he put behind him his poetic ambitions and threw himself with fanatical ardor into the struggle for liberty; and his old age, when, blind and discredited, he sat down amid the wreck of everything for which he had given his best twenty years, to write the poem which from early youth he had felt it his mis sion to leave to the nation. Milton's youth was singularly sweet and Sheltered. He was born in London on the 9th of December, 1608, the son of John Milton, a scrivener or solicitor do ing business at the Sign of the Spread Eagle in Bread Street. It is worth noting that for two generations at least the Miltons had exhibited intense partisanship in the religious disputes which agitated the nation. Richard Milton, the poet's grand father, had been a stubborn Catholic recusant under Elizabeth, and John Milton, the poet's father, had broken with his family in order to join the Puritans. The Puri tanism of the home in Bread Street was not, however, of an ascetic or unlovely type. The father was an accomplished musician, of some note as a composer, and could even on occasion try his hand at poetry. This mellow atmosphere of taste and cultivation, spiritualized by a sincere piety, united with larger circumstances to enrich life for the young poet. We must remember that in Milton's childhood Shakespeare was still alive, that at the Mermaid Tavern, probably in the very street where the scrivener's house stood, Ben Jonson held his merry meetings, and that most of the stalwart figures which had made the reign of the Virgin Queen illustrious were still to be seen about the streets of London. There was as yet hardly a hint of the passing away of those spacious times, of the spirit of romance and adventure, which had filled Elizabethan England. His nature, there fore, was in no danger of being starved at the outset, as it must have been if his birth had fallen a few decades farther on in the struggle between the old and the new, when Puritanism had narrowed and hardened itself in order to project itself more forcibly against its enemies.
