Book excerpt: In 1878, George Millington donated property for the first train depot connecting Memphis to Northern markets. By 1903, the town of Millington was incorporated. World War I pilots trained at Millington's Park Field, and nearby, Chickasaw Ordnance Works and the world's largest inland navy base greatly aided World War II efforts. Educators and activists Ida B. Wells and National Education Association president Charl Williams began their careers in area schools. Many talented individuals, including musicians Justin Timberlake, Myla Smith, Bobby Whitlock, and Rev. Al Green, as well as a number of college and professional athletes, have called Millington home. Images of America: Millington, the town's first photographic history, presents people, places, and events--great and small--that have contributed to the community's success.

Book excerpt: As agents for the State of Tennessee, Andrew Jackson and Isaac Shelby purchased land from the Chickasaw Nation in 1818 that eventually became West Tennessee. In 1819, with fewer than 400 inhabitants, Shelby County was formed and named for Isaac Shelby. From its early days as a valuable site on the Mississippi River for the French and Spanish, to the current world headquarters for FedEx, Shelby County has been a strategic location for commerce, whether in cotton, music, or overnight packages. The county's diverse, and sometimes tragic, history includes Clarence Saunders's creation of the first self-service grocery store, Beale Street, Elvis Presley, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the first Holiday Inn, and Stax and Sun recording studios. Images of America: Shelby County also looks at the municipalities that make up the largest county in Tennessee. Cities such as Bartlett, Collierville, and Germantown began in the mid-1800s as small farming communities and today have the highest growth rate in the state.

Book excerpt: In today's fluid culture, many churches are adrift--longing to reach spiritually thirsty people, but failing to make an impact. Have you noticed? Congregations are stuck or declining. Millennials and Gen Z are walking away. Volunteers and their generosity are drying up. Is your city, town, or neighborhood spiritually dry? Do you long to see more of the living water of Jesus flowing freely through your community, generating a fresh wave of ministry momentum? Buckle up: you're in for a whitewater ride! Liquid Church tells the fascinating story of a New Jersey church that began "on accident" and grew into one of America's 100 Fastest-Growing Churches, with over 5,000 in weekly attendance and more than 2,400 baptisms to date. Their secret? They harnessed the power of six powerful ministry currents sweeping across North America including: special needs, creative communication, ministry mergers, compassionate cause, radical generosity, and leadership development. With powerful stories and scriptural insights, backed by national research, Tim Lucas and Warren Bird describe dozens of fresh ideas, new ministry wineskins, and hard-won leadership learnings that resonate with rising generations in today's "show-then-tell" culture. Each chapter includes practical tools, real-life examples, and links to "Other Churches Making Waves" with cutting-edge ministry ideas designed to help saturate your city for Christ. Ready to dive deeper? Whether you serve a brand-new church plant, fast-growing congregation, or an aging ministry ready for reinvention, Liquid Church is an inspiring and practical guide for leaders ready to reach their spiritually thirsty neighbors--those who have given up on church, but haven't given up on God.

Book Little Girl Get Up

  • Publisher : WestBow Press
  • Release : 2023-03-09

Download or read book Little Girl Get Up written by Rick Malwitz and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is told in the New Testament book of Mark about a paralyzed man brought to Jesus, who was ministering in a crowded house in Capernaum. Unable to bring the man through a jammed doorway, four guys took him to the roof. I imagine they peeled away the tiles, created an opening, held the four corners of an old sail and lowered the man to Jesus, who healed the paralytic. After complaining that her back hurt, Leah’s body shut down from the gradual effects of a spinal cord stroke. Within eighteen hours she was in the emergency room paralyzed and unable to breathe on her own. The story of Leah, as told by her grandfather, is another story of help from four corners: the family, the church, the local community, and the medical community. “Little Girl, Get Up” is also a story how faith in God can be affirmed through a crisis. Leah’s mother Abby spent eighty-seven days and nights in her hospital rooms, knowing her three other children were cared for by their grandparents. During the month when Leah was a patient at the Morristown Medical Center her father Peter slept in the waiting room. When told by staff he could not sleep there, he slept in his car for as long he could bear the March chill. Leah’s brother Timmy, then seven, spent those eighty-seven days with Abby’s parents. The four-year-old twins, Serena and Joey, spent those days with Peter’s parents. Liquid Church, where Abby and Peter met during its founding years, before it grew into one of largest congregations in the Northeast, offered extraordinary support. As did the community of Long Hill Township, New Jersey, and hospital staffs in Morristown and the Children’s Specialized Hospital New Brunswick, where Leah and her mom spent two months. Abby called the New Brunswick hospital the “gymnastics hospital.” It was where Leah learned to walk again.
