Book excerpt: Milling is the machining process of using rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece. It covers a wide variety of different operations and is one the most the commonly used processes in industries and machine shops today. In this book, the authors propose an approach that provides good evaluation results within a short interpolation time for rapidly evaluating non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) curves and surfaces in actual machining processes. The next chapter explores a regression model of the milling tool wear by using the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) technique in a regular cut as well as entry cut and exit cut. The remaining chapters evaluate the applications and limitations of the milling process using the breakage matrix approach; mechanochemistry (which connects mining and metallurgical operations) as a way to develop new materials and to develop environmentally friendly and economical technologies; and an experimental investigation on automated wrought aluminum alloy using uncoated sintered carbide end mills with different helix angles (the main aim of all machining operations is to obtain lower machining costs by improving the quality and productivity. Furthermore, the consumer's focus on environmentally conscious products has put increased pressure on industries to minimise the use of cutting fluids).

Book Production Milling

Download or read book Production Milling written by Edward K. Hammond and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Production Milling: A Treatise Dealing With the Methods Employed in Progressive American Machine Shops for Obtaining Quantity Production on Various Types of Milling Machines Recent years have witnessed the introduction of many improved methods of performing milling operations. On production work, where high rates of output are essential, this result has been accomplished in various ways, although mainly by a reduction of the nonproductive time of the men and machines in the milling department. In the preparation of this treatise, the authors object has been the same as that of a member of the planning department in a factory, who is called upon to devise methods of milling and to design fixtures that will enable repetition operations to be economically performed. Information and illustrations relating to the latest developments in production milling practice have been gathered by personal studies of the methods used in many of the most progressive manufacturing plants; and an acknowledgement is made to the large number of factory executives who have cooperated in carrying on this work. All of the methods discussed have been successfully used under actual shop conditions. It has been assumed that all mechanics reading this book are familiar with the various types of production milling machines. For that reason, only brief descriptions of the essential features of each type of milling machine have been included. It is the purpose of this book to explain the application of some of the more efficient methods of operating milling machines on repetition work, rather than to discuss milling machine design. In connection with the examples of machining operations performed on the various types of milling machines, information is included covering the speed and feed at which each operation is performed and the rate of production that is obtained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reliable scheduling in cutting conditions is very important in machining processes, and this requires thorough understanding of the physical behaviors of the machining process, which cannot be achieved without understanding the underlying mechanism of the processes. The book describes the mechanics and dynamics together with the clamping principles in milling processes, and can be used as a guideline for graduate students and research engineers who wish to be effective manufacture engineers and researchers. Many books have focused on common principles, which are suitable for general machining processes, e.g., milling, turning and drilling, etc. This book specifically aims at exploring the mechanics and dynamics of milling processes. Original theoretical derivations and new observations on static cutting force models, dynamic stability models and clamping principles associated with milling processes are classified and detailed. The book is indented as a text for graduate students and machining engineers who wish to intensively learn milling mechanism and machine tool vibration.

Book Machine Tools for High Performance Machining

Download or read book Machine Tools for High Performance Machining written by Norberto Lopez de Lacalle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machine tools are the main production factor for many industrial applications in many important sectors. Recent developments in new motion devices and numerical control have lead to considerable technological improvements in machine tools. The use of five-axis machining centers has also spread, resulting in reductions in set-up and lead times. As a consequence, feed rates, cutting speed and chip section increased, whilst accuracy and precision have improved as well. Additionally, new cutting tools have been developed, combining tough substrates, optimal geometries and wear resistant coatings. “Machine Tools for High Performance Machining” describes in depth several aspects of machine structures, machine elements and control, and application. The basics, models and functions of each aspect are explained by experts from both academia and industry. Postgraduates, researchers and end users will all find this book an essential reference.
