Book Madam Millie

Download or read book Madam Millie written by Max Evans and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2013-02-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mildred Clark Cusey was a whore, a madam, an entrepreneur, and above all, a survivor. The story of Silver City Millie, as she referred to herself, is the story of one woman's personal tragedies and triumphs as an orphan, a Harvey Girl waitress on the Santa Fe railroad, a prostitute with innumerable paramours, and a highly successful bordello businesswoman. Millie broke the mold in so many ways, and yet her life's story of survival was not unlike that of thousands of women who went West only to find that their most valuable assets were their physical beauty and their personality. Petite at five feet tall with piercing blue eyes, Millie captured men's attention by her very essence and her unmistakable joie de vivre. Born to Italian immigrant parents near Kansas City, she and her sister were orphaned early and separated from each other. Millie learned hard lessons on the streets, but she never gave up and she vowed to protect and support her ailing older sister. Caught in a domestic squabble in her foster home, Millie wound up in juvenile court with Harry Truman as her judge. This would be only the first of many brushes in her life with prominent politicians. When physicians diagnosed her sister with tuberculosis and recommended she move West to a Catholic home in Deming, New Mexico, Millie moved with her. Expenses ran high and after a brief stint waiting tables as a Harvey Girl, Millie found that her meager tips could easily be augmented by turning tricks. Thus, out of financial need and devotion to her sister, Mildred Cusey turned to a life of prostitution and a career at which she soon excelled and became both rich and famous.

Book Champagne Kisses Cyanide Dreams

Download or read book Champagne Kisses Cyanide Dreams written by Ralph Graves and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I>Growing up in Manhattan and attending Groton and Harvard, I learned to tolerate many frightful people. But you have to draw the line somewhere. I drew the line at Mildred Silk. Thus are we introduced to Jason Arnold, occasional writer, bon vivant, and acerbic observer of life on Martha's Vineyard - the exclusive preserve of the rich, the privileged, and the famous. And few of the island's denizens are more determinedly rich, privileged, and famous than Millie Silk. Famous most of all for her acid tongue and general mean-spiritedness, Millie is about to publish her most extravagant no-holds-barred celebrity expose ever. But the presses may never roll once she is murdered at her own party, in plain sight of nearly two dozen witnesses. All the island - enemies and admirers alike - is aghast. Rounding up the suspects is easy; the killer must have been present at the party, and every last one of the guests seems to have had an excellent motive. But as the police begin to investigate, the most likely suspects also begin to die, one by one, and all by cyanide. Champagne Kisses, Cyanide Dreams is a frequently sarcastic, often hilarious, and unflaggingly thrilling tour through the celebrity mansions and gardens of a Vineyard most tourists never see. Ralph Graves is a suave and civilized writer who manages to by very funny, very suspenseful, and very entertaining.

Book Mater Gladiatrix

Download or read book Mater Gladiatrix written by Richard A. Marin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-07-17 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1946, while Rosy the Riveter was taking her shop apron off and setting down her wrench for the last time, Millie Uher got into a U.S. Army surplus Jeep and drove up into the hills southwest of Maracaibo, Venezuela. In this biography written by her son, we learn she was much more than a working mother. She was a woman of the world and a rare trendsetter that changed the world without design and perhaps intent. The development and education expert would live 100 years and break ground and gender barriers as an athlete in basketball, tennis, golf, and especially alpine skiing as she trekked the globe. She dared to go where others, including men, dared not go, living her life at full speed and never once touching the brakes. From immigrant's child to global diplomat, from rural schoolchild to urbane single mother, and from first-generation high school graduate to Ph.D., this is the story of a traditional American girl who became a bona fide adventurer.

When Juanita Lewis arrived in Paper Moon, Montana, courtesy of a Greyhound bus, she was just looking for a brief respite. Instead, she found a home, friends, and a man to love. But this leave-your-attitude-by-the-door woman made a promise to herself–one that she intends to keep. Now that she’s got a place to come back to, Juanita wants to see the world. A trip out West with her eccentric trucker friend, Peaches, leads to a cooking stint at a new age spa for skinny celebrities. Crazy, but its here that Juanita decides to take her talent for cooking to a new level . . . and make it her dream. She also learns something about life: It does turn out the way you planned it–just be ready to change the plan a few times along the way. Just as Juanita’s journey begins, she’s called back to Paper Moon, having inherited an old, slightly haunted B&B, as well as a mountain of decisions. There’s her self-centered, irresponsible daughter, insisting that she get some sense and come back home to Columbus, and a son who’s doing things Juanita can’t bear to think about. So how does a middle-aged black woman from the projects follow her heart when it’s heading in so many different directions? By asking the right questions, then listening with her soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary study of the religious dimensions of dreams shows how modern dream research supports and enriches our understanding of religiously meaningful dreams. The Wilderness of Dreams does four things that no other work on dreams has done. First, it surveys the whole range of modern dream research—not just the work of depth psychologists and neuroscientists, but also the findings of anthropologists, content analysts, cognitive psychologists, creative artists, and lucid dreaming researchers. Second, it draws upon new advances in hermeneutic philosophy in order to clarify basic questions about how to interpret dreams. Third, it develops a careful, well-grounded notion of religious meaning—the "root metaphor" concept—to show that seeking religious meanings in dreams is not mere superstition. And fourth, the book reflects on the question of why modern Westerners are so interested in affirming, or debunking, the idea that dreams have religious meanings.
