Download or read book Little Heathens written by Mildred Armstrong Kalish and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2008-04-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I tell of a time, a place, and a way of life long gone. For many years I have had the urge to describe that treasure trove, lest it vanish forever. So, partly in response to the basic human instinct to share feelings and experiences, and partly for the sheer joy and excitement of it all, I report on my early life. It was quite a romp. So begins Mildred Kalish’s story of growing up on her grandparents’ Iowa farm during the depths of the Great Depression. With her father banished from the household for mysterious transgressions, five-year-old Mildred and her family could easily have been overwhelmed by the challenge of simply trying to survive. This, however, is not a tale of suffering. Kalish counts herself among the lucky of that era. She had caring grandparents who possessed—and valiantly tried to impose—all the pioneer virtues of their forebears, teachers who inspired and befriended her, and a barnyard full of animals ready to be tamed and loved. She and her siblings and their cousins from the farm across the way played as hard as they worked, running barefoot through the fields, as free and wild as they dared. Filled with recipes and how-tos for everything from catching and skinning a rabbit to preparing homemade skin and hair beautifiers, apple cream pie, and the world’s best head cheese (start by scrubbing the head of the pig until it is pink and clean), Little Heathens portrays a world of hardship and hard work tempered by simple rewards. There was the unsurpassed flavor of tender new dandelion greens harvested as soon as the snow melted; the taste of crystal clear marble-sized balls of honey robbed from a bumblebee nest; the sweet smell from the body of a lamb sleeping on sun-warmed grass; and the magical quality of oat shocking under the light of a full harvest moon. Little Heathens offers a loving but realistic portrait of a “hearty-handshake Methodist” family that gave its members a remarkable legacy of kinship, kindness, and remembered pleasures. Recounted in a luminous narrative filled with tenderness and humor, Kalish’s memoir of her childhood shows how the right stuff can make even the bleakest of times seem like “quite a romp.”
Download or read book Tales of Willow Tree Farm written by Alan Byron and published by Alan Byron. This book was released on 2011 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of an extraordinary Farmer, Ted, his sheepdog Rounder and their adventures created by the mystery and theft of a mystical jewel. The jewel is acquired by Ted during his travels in the mountains of Sylvania where he solves the puzzle of an ancient hermit who has been waiting for him for a thousand years. In the wood there are creatures of the forest, including the hermit's wolf, who have been transformed into animals because of breaking the sacred laws of the forest. The jewel has mysterious healing powers and, through it, Ted's farm and his farmyard animals prosper. The animals have adventures of their own, including cleverly outmanoeuvring a dangerous dog, and defeating a sly fox with the aid of little mice and a talking crow. The jewel is stolen by two rascals of the road, by trickery, and Rounder and his friends go in search of the jewel. Meanwhile Ted is duped by an unscrupulous business man into selling the farm. The animals receive help from a strange fabulous creature, the Gombit, from sideways land. One of the rascals has a moment of redemption after being saved from certain death by Rounder. After pursuing the remaining trickster they return to the farm where they have one last task to save it from sale with the aid of a courageous goat. The adventure ends with the appearance of a strangely familiar man of power. He bears a profound message from the ancient people of the Lakota.

Download or read book The Clubwomen s Daughters written by Gwen Athene Tarbox and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2000 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Via examining such literature as Helen Dawes Brown's Two College Girls (1886) and Kelley-Hawkins' role model fiction for African-American girls from an American studies' perspective, Tarbox traces the clubwomen's movement that spawned some f the earliest works of adolescent fiction to validate public female communities as transformative agents. The author examines the movement's literary, charitable, social, and suffrage activities that made it part of the cultural landscape by the latter half of the 19th century. She concludes with the current trend to revitalize the collectivist impulse in such fiction as Maureen Holohan's Broadway Ballplayers series. Based on a dissertation at Purdue U. (date unspecified). Download or read book Meet the Sky written by McCall Hoyle and published by Blink. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning author McCall Hoyle comes a new young adult novel, Meet the Sky, a story of love, letting go, and the unstoppable power of nature. It all started with the accident. The one that caused Sophie’s dad to walk out of her life. The one that left Sophie’s older sister, Meredith, barely able to walk at all. With nothing but pain in her past, all Sophie wants is to plan for the future—keep the family business running, get accepted to veterinary school, and protect her mom and sister from another disaster. But when a hurricane forms off the coast of North Carolina’s Outer Banks and heads right toward their island, Sophie realizes nature is one thing she can’t control. After she gets separated from her family during the evacuation, Sophie finds herself trapped on the island with the last person she’d have chosen—the reckless and wild Finn Sanders, who broke her heart freshman year. As they struggle to find safety, Sophie learns that Finn has suffered his own heartbreak; but instead of playing it safe, Finn’s become the kind of guy who goes surfing in the eye of the hurricane. He may be the perfect person to remind Sophie how to embrace life again, but only if their newfound friendship can survive the storm. Praise for McCall Hoyle’s debut novel, The Thing with Feathers: “Beautiful, touching, and bursting with hope.” Pintip Dunn, award-winning and New York Times bestselling author “Heartfelt and affecting. Hoyle tells a familiar story, but does so in a voice that is rarely heard, and that makes all the difference.” Leah Thomas, William C.
