Download or read book A Collector s Guide to Teddy Bears written by Judith Miller and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate compendium of the ultimate companions. It's well known that President Roosevelt catapulted the teddy bear into American culture, but, in fact, the history of the teddy bear is rich and began in Germany. Today, teddy bears are big business at retail stores, on the web and among collectors, and their appeal is worldwide. In this authoritative reference book Judith Miller includes archival illustrations that mark the teddy bear's history from the 1920s to the 1970s, when bear artists and artisans took over from the traditional manufacturers, many of which had shut their doors. The book also features specially commissioned photographs of adorable teddy bears from public and private collections, and it gives information about the many styles, designers and makers, from antique Steiff bears to modern limited-edition bears. All of the important manufacturers and crafters of teddy bears are covered, including Bing, Chad Valley, Farnell, Ideal, Merrythough, Schuco and, of course, Steiff. A Collector's Guide to Teddy Bears is a sweet homage to the teddy bear as a child's best friend. As a comprehensive resource on this highly sought-after collector's item, it will appeal to the many thousands of fans and serious collectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Lewis Miller, the celebrated floral designer and "Flower Bandit" himself, an intimate and joyous behind-the-scenes look at his signature Flower Flashes as they introduced bright moments of natural beauty into the city when they were needed most. Before dawn one morning in October 2016, renowned New York-based floral designer Lewis Miller stealthily arranged hundreds of brightly colored dahlias, carnations, and mums into a psychedelic halo around the John Lennon memorial in Central Park. The spontaneous floral installation was Miller's gift to the city—an effort to spark joy during a difficult time. Nearly five years and more than ninety Flower Flashes later, these elaborate flower bombs—bursts of jubilant blooms in trash cans, over bus canopies, on construction sites and traffic medians—have brought moments of delight and wonder to countless New Yorkers and flower lovers everywhere, and earned Miller a following of dedicated fans and the nickname the "Flower Bandit." After New York City entered lockdown, Miller doubled down, creating Flower Flashes outside hospitals to express gratitude to frontline health workers and throughout the city to raise spirits. This gorgeous and poignant visual diary traces the phenomenon from the first, spontaneous Flower Flash to the even more profound installations of the pandemic through a kaleidoscopic collage of photos documenting the Flower Flashes, behind-the-scenes snapshots, Miller's inspiration material, fan contributions, and more.

Book The Secret Violence of Henry Miller

Download or read book The Secret Violence of Henry Miller written by Katy Masuga and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2011 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miller as a writer whose work does something more profound and violent to literary conventions than produce novel effects: it announces the possibility of difference and instability within language itself. Henry Miller is a cult figure in the world of fiction, in part due to having been banned for obscenity for nearly thirty years. Alongside the liberating effect of his explicit treatment of sexuality, however, Miller developed a provocative form of writing that encourages the reader to question language as a stable communicative tool and to consider the act of writing as an ongoing mode of creation, always in motion, perpetually establishing itself and creating meaning through that very motion. Katy Masuga provides a new reading of Miller that is alert to the aggressively and self-consciously writerly form of his work. Critiquing the categorization of Miller into specific literary genres through an examination of the small body of critical texts on his oeuvre, Masuga draws on Deleuze and Guattari's concept of a minor literature, Blanchot's "infinite curve," and Bataille's theory of puerile language, while also considering Miller in relation to other writers, including Proust, Rilke, and William Carlos Williams. She shows how Miller defies conventional modes of writing, subverting language from within. Katy Masuga is Adjunct Professor of British and American literature, cinema, and the arts in the Cultural Studies Department at the University of Paris III: Sorbonne Nouvelle.

Book Henry Miller and How He Got That Way

Download or read book Henry Miller and How He Got That Way written by Katy Masuga and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying six significant writers--Whitman, Dostoevsky, Rimbaud, Lewis Carroll, Proust and D. H. Lawrence--Katy Masuga examines their influence on Miller's work as well as Miller's retroactive impact on their writing. She explores four forms of intertextuality in relation to each 'ancestral' author: direct allusions, unconscious style, reverse influence and participation of the ancestral author as part of the story within the text. The study is informed by the theories of polyvocity from Bakhtin, Barthes and Kristeva and of language games and the indefatigability of writing in the work of Blanchot, Wittgenstein and Deleuze.By presenting Miller in intertextual context, he emerges as a noteworthy modernist writer whose contributions to literature include the struggle to find a distinctive voice alongside a distinguished lineage of literary figures.

Book Audun and the Polar Bear

Download or read book Audun and the Polar Bear written by William I. Miller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-10-31 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audun’s Story is the tale of an Icelandic farmhand who buys a polar bear in Greenland for no other reason than to give it to the Danish king, half a world away. It can justly be listed among the finest pieces of short fiction in world literature. Terse in the best saga style, it spins a story of complex competitive social action, revealing the cool wit and finely-calibrated reticence of its three main characters: Audun, Harald Hardradi, and King Svein. The tale should have much to engage legal and cultural historians, anthropologists, economists, philosophers, and students of literature. The story’s treatment of gift-exchange is worthy of the fine anthropological and historical writing on gift-exchange; its treatment of face-to-face interaction a match for Erving Goffman.
