Book The Impact of Nutrition and Diet on Oral Health

Download or read book The Impact of Nutrition and Diet on Oral Health written by F.V. Zohoori and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most oral diseases are preventable, yet they remain the most globally common noncommunicable disorders, affecting people throughout their lifetime. Lifestyle, including diet and food choice, is central to the occurrence of oral disease. Nutrition and diet can impact the development and status of the oral cavity as well as the progression of illness. Also, poor oral health can influence the ability to eat and, consequently, to maintain an adequate diet and nutrient balance. This book, consisting of 14 chapters, provides current information on the impact of nutrients (macro- and micro-elements and vitamins) and diet on oral health and vice versa (i.e., the impact of oral health on diet/nutrition). It also reviews possible oral health effects of probiotics as well as relationships between genotype and diet, which are important for determining oral disease risk. This book is a helpful resource for under- and postgraduate students. It will also be useful to dentists and nutritionists/dietitians as they integrate nutrition education into medical practice.

Book excerpt: Provides up-to-date information on the rationale for the use of fluoride in dentistry This volume brings together current concepts relating to the use of fluoride in dentistry. In contributions written by expert authors, data from this large and complex field have been assembled into a clear sequence and presented in a lucid fashion. The first section deals with the sources of fluoride intake and its metabolism, in order to fully understand fluoride toxicity and the importance of monitoring intake. The second section focuses in more detail on modes of fluoride application and the mechanisms by which this ion interacts with the oral environment to cause a remarkable reduction in dental caries. The role of fluoride in the prevention of dental erosion is also elucidated. The complex mechanisms by which fluoride exerts its effects are described with clarity and the entire text is accompanied by particularly useful illustrations. As a clear up-to-date summary of current thinking in the field, this book will be essential reading for research workers and postgraduate students. Established researchers and teachers in both clinical and basic sciences will find it to be a valuable addition to their libraries, and clinicians will be able to better evaluate the current scientific evidence on the advantages as well as the hazards of fluoride in dentistry.

Book Prevalence and Severity of Dental Fluorosis in the United States 1999 2004

Download or read book Prevalence and Severity of Dental Fluorosis in the United States 1999 2004 written by Eugenio D. Beltrán-Aguilar and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dental fluorosis refers to changes in the appearance of tooth enamel that are caused by long-term ingestion of fluoride during the time teeth are forming. Studies conducted in the 1930s showed that the severity of tooth decay was lower and dental fluorosis was higher in areas with more fluoride in the drinking water. In response to these findings, community water fluoridation programs were developed to add fluoride to drinking water to reach an optimal level for preventing tooth decay, while limiting the chance of developing dental fluorosis. By the 1980s, studies in selected U.S. communities reported an increase in dental fluorosis, paralleling the expansion of water fluoridation and the increased availability of other sources of ingested fluoride, such as fluoride toothpaste (if swallowed) and fluoride supplements. This report describes the prevalence of dental fluorosis in the United States and changes in the prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis among adolescents between 1986-1987 and 1999-2004. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1999-2004 and the 1986-1987 National Survey of Oral Health in U.S. School Children." - p. 1.

Book Preventive Dentistry

    Book Details:
  • Author : M.L. Silverstone
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9401174415
  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Preventive Dentistry written by M.L. Silverstone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dental disease accounts for more pain, suffering and loss of work ing hours than almost any other disease. And yet, since no one dies as a result of dental disease and since tooth loss is still regarded incorrectly as a normal consequence of ageing, there has been no major emphasis towards or demands for the preventive aspect of dentistry. By tradition, dentistry has been largely a reparative profession. However, reparative dentistry alone cannot bring about the control of dental disease which has now reached epidemic proportions in some countries. Over the past decade, the results of basic research, applied research and clinical trials from many parts of the world have shown that preventive dentistry can be highly successful. This book deals with the prevention of dental caries and has been written for the dental practitioner, the dental student, the post graduate worker and those engaged in dental research. Basic knowledge of the disease mechanisms, the tissues they affect and the scientific basis for each preventive technique described have been presented. Preventive dentistry requires a team approach; the dentist being the leader, with the other ancillary workers acting as important members of the team.
