Book Military Training in the Making of Men Classic Reprint

Download or read book Military Training in the Making of Men Classic Reprint written by Frederick J. Libby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Military Training in the Making of Men First of all, does military training inculcate patriotism? From the confidence with which this assertion has been put forward one would suppose that it cannot be denied. In a superficial sense 1t does inculcate patriotism. The recent draft has made men who never before had been conscious of their obligation to America realize that they were its citizens and that as citizens they owe their country a debt. Poles, Lithuanians, Englishmen, Germans, Italians, Greeks, all have been forced to choose between conflicting loyalties and to confess their true allegiance. Outwardly, at least, they have renounced all nationalities except that which made them Americans. Those between twenty one and thirty-one have entered our army. This sacrifice, it is assumed, has transformed all who Were indifferent into patriots. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Making a Soldier Classic Reprint

Download or read book Making a Soldier Classic Reprint written by A. C. Sharpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making a Soldier The creation of an effective Army Reserve is one of the most perplexing questions with which the statesman has to deal. In Germany, Switzerland, France and other European countries the problem is solved by a system of conscription or compulsory service. Every young man on arriving at proper age, unless exempted for certain cause, is required to pass thru a prescribed period of military training. In England and the United States, on the contrary, no such system exists, as compulsory service, even for a short period, would be regarded by the people with extreme aversion. Reliance is therefore placed on volunteers. Neither of these methods, however, has been found entirely satisfactory. Conscription, being generally obnoxious, and especially so in time of peace, the term of service is reduced below a safe minimum and many exemptions are obtained. The volunteer system, on the other hand, is found equally defective. In peace it fails to secure sufficient men, and in war it has to be kept alive by the payment of enormous bounties. This has been the experience of the United States since the earliest days, and in the great civil war of 1861 even the bounty system finally broke down and gave place to the draft. If, however. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Officer's Responsibility for His Men Many books have been written on the training of enlisted men of our Army, most of which have dealt with the military side only. There is another side, the influence of which is quite as important in rounding out the soldier's training to make him the ideal among the Nation's defenders. This book is sent forth as the result of the combined efforts of men of the Second Fort Sheridan Training Camp, to place in the hands of newly commissioned officers, in concrete form, a system of solving the many problems they will meet in the development and training of the newly formed regiments in the armies of the United States. It is believed that the benefits to be gained will increase in proportion to the spirit with which it is accepted and applied.
