Book Military Record of Louisiana

Download or read book Military Record of Louisiana written by Napier Bartlett and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reprint edition of Napier Bartlett’s 1875 memoir again makes available a valuable resource on Louisiana troops’ participation in the Civil War. Bartlett served throughout the war in Louisiana’s elite Washington Artillery and fought in many battles in Virginia and the East. He later wrote an engaging account of his experiences, A Soldier’s Story of the War, revealing a sensitive man’s reaction to all that combat entails. This narrative constitutes a substantial portion of Military Record of Louisiana. The balance of the volume provides much detailed information and official data concerning Louisiana units in the Confederate Army, including muster rolls of the Orleans Guard, the Thirteenth Louisiana Regiment, the Washington Artillery, and Louisiana troops who fought in Virginia, the West, and the Trans-Mississippi. It also lists the casualties of various regiments (so far as was known then) and the cemeteries where they were buried, and includes company journals and personal narratives of prominent Louisiana soldiers. Part memoir, part inventory, Military Record of Louisiana is a storehouse of information for scholars, students, and genealogists alike.

Download or read book The Civil War in Books written by David J. Eicher and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the assistance of several scholars, including James M. McPherson and Gary Gallagher, and a long-time specialist in Civil War books, Ralph Newman, David Eicher has selected for inclusion in The Civil War in Books the 1,100 most important books on the war. These are organized into categories as wide-ranging as "Battles and Campaigns," "Biographies, Memoirs, and Letters," "Unit Histories," and "General Works." The last of these includes volumes on black Americans and the war, battlefields, fiction, pictorial works, politics, prisons, railroads, and a host of other topics. Annotations are included for all entries in the work, which is presented in an oversized 8 1/2 x 11 inch volume in two-column format. Appendixes list "prolific" Civil War publishers and other Civil War bibliographies, and the works included in Eicher's mammoth undertaking are indexed by author or editor and by title. Gary Gallagher's foreword traces the development of Civil War bibliographies and declares that Eicher's annotation exceeds that of any previous comprehensive volume. The Civil War in Books, Gallagher believes, is "precisely the type of guide" that has been needed. The first full-scale, fully-annotated bibliography on the Civil War to appear in more than thirty years, Eicher's The Civil War in Books is a remarkable compendium of the best reading available about the worst conflict ever to strike the United States. The bibliography, the most valuable reference book on the subject since The Civil War Day by Day, will be essential for college and university libraries, dealers in rare and secondhand books, and Civil War buffs.

Book The Civil War Diary of Rev James Sheeran C Ss R

Download or read book The Civil War Diary of Rev James Sheeran C Ss R written by James B. Sheeran and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the Civil War diary of Redemptorist priest Rev. James Sheeran, C. Ss. R., who was chaplain to the 14th Louisiana Regiment of the Confederacy. Irish-born Sheeran was one of only two Catholic chaplains commissioned for the Confederacy who kept a journal. From August 1, 1862 through April 24, 1865, the journal tells of all the major events of his life in abundant detail: on the battle field, in the hospitals, and among Catholics and Protestants whom he encountered in local towns, on the trains, and in the course of his ministrations. His ideological sympathies clearly rest with the Confederacy. The tone is forthright, even haughty, but captures in sure and steady fashion, both the personality of the man and the events to which he was a witness, especially the major battles. The journal is arguably the most unique narrative of the war written by a chaplain of any denomination and certainly is the most extensive.

Book The Final Battles of the Petersburg Campaign

Download or read book The Final Battles of the Petersburg Campaign written by A. Wilson Greene and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Petersburg Campaign was what finally did it. After months of relentless conflict throughout 1864, the Confederate army led by General Robert E. Lee holed up in the Virginia city of Petersburg as Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's vastly superior forces lurked nearby. The brutal fighting that took place around the city during 1864 and into 1865 decimated both armies as Grant used his manpower advantage to repeatedly smash the Confederate lines, a tactic that eventually resulted in the decisive breakthrough that ultimately doomed the Confederacy. The breakthrough and the events that led up to it are the subject of A. Wilson Greene's groundbreaking book The Final Battles of the Petersburg Campaign, a significant revision of a much-praised work first published in 2000. Surprisingly, despite Petersburg's decisive importance to the war's outcome, the campaign has received scant attention from historians. Greene's book, with its incisive analysis and compelling narrative, changes this, offering readers a rich account of the personalities and strategies that shaped the final phase of the fighting. Greene's ultimate focus on the climatic engagements of April 2, 1865, the day that Confederate control of Richmond and Petersburg was effectively ended. The book tells this story from the perspectives of the two army groups that clashed on that day: the Union Sixth Corps and the Confederate Third Corps. But Greene does more than just recount the military tactics at Petersburg; he also connects the reader intimately with how the war affected society and spotlights the soldiers, both officers and enlisted men, whose experiences defined the outcome. Thanks to his extensive research and consultation of rare source materials, Greene gives readers a vibrant perspective on the campaign that broke the Confederate spirit once and for all. A. Wilson Greene is president of Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier near Petersburg, Virginia. He also has taught at Mary Washington College and worked for sixteen years with the National Park Service.
