Book excerpt: * Explains developments in recent peacekeeping operations and politico-military environments * Bridges the gap between peace and conflict scholarship * Highlights new aspects of war studies Following over a decade of substantial and extensive American military involvement, peace operations have passed from a position of strategic irrelevance to one of strategic importance. War and Intervention provides a snapshot of the contemporary environment of peace operations, in terms of both war and intervention. It also answers two broad questions: 1) What are key characteristics of armed competitors in the current environment of peace operations, particularly in terms of their structure and organization, financing, access to military resources, and the tactical tools and methods applied by these movements? And 2) What are key recent developments in the dimensions and methods of intervention, particularly regarding the use of force, the adaptation of global militaries to peace operations and the emerging political, legal and economic components of intervention? War and Intervention allows readers from a range of domains--military, academic, humanitarian, political, and diplomatic--to understand the priorities and methods of different actors in today’s peace operations.

  • ISBN : 0788177702
  • Pages : 73 pages

Download or read book Military Prepositioning written by Mark E. Gebicke and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1999-09 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviews the readiness of DoD prepositioning programs by which military stores, or prepositions, reserves of military equipment and supplies would be located near potential conflict areas. During a crisis, prepositioning would speed U.S. response times because only the troops and a relatively small amount of materiel would need to be brought to the conflict area. This report examines (1) the basis for the program requirements and (2) the rates of inventory fill and maintenance condition of prepositioned stocks and the reliability of this readiness data. Focuses on the Army and the AF programs because of concerns about the condition and mgmt. of their stocks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many defense observers and government officials, including some Members of Congress, are concerned that the U.S. military faces a readiness crisis. The Department of Defense has used readiness as a central justification for its FY2017 and FY2018 funding requests. Yet what makes the U.S. military ready is debated. This report explains how differing uses of the term readiness cloud the debate on whether a readiness crisis exists and, if so, what funding effort would best address it. CRS has identified two principal uses of the term readiness. One, readiness is used in a broad sense to describe whether military forces are able to do what the nation asks of them. In this sense, readiness encompasses almost every aspect of the military. Two, readiness is used more narrowly to mean only one component of what makes military forces able. In this second sense, readiness is parallel to other military considerations, like force structure and modernization, which usually refer to the size of the military and the sophistication of its weaponry. Both uses embody accepted concepts: the broader use capturing the military These two senses of the term are interdependent. Today, most observers assume the military should be as ready as possible in the narrow sense, but in past eras some favored accepting lower readiness in a narrow sense in order to redirect resources in ways they felt improved the military Use of either sense of readiness affects Congress in a broad sense, asserting the U.S. military is not prepared for the challenges it faces largely because of its size or the sophistication of its weapons. Most observers who do not see a crisis tend to use readiness in a narrow sense, assessing only the state of training and the status of current equipment.

Book Army Readiness Reporting Systems 1945 2003

Download or read book Army Readiness Reporting Systems 1945 2003 written by William M. Donnelly and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The U.S. Army before 1945 did not have and did not need a formal readiness reporting system. After World War II, however, it found itself committed to large-scale deployments in Europe and in the Pacific, commitments that with the Cold War would continue for the next 45 years. The demands of this war, along with the wars in Korea and Vietnam, made it vital that senior service leaders had accurate information on the readiness of units in the Regular Army, the Army National Guard, and the Army Reserve. The methods for measuring readiness, however, soon became and then remained a matter of contention. Equally contentious was the use of data generated by readiness reporting systems, both within the service and by others outside the service. The end of the Cold War did not end these disputes. Indeed, the years between that victory and the start of the second Iraq war in 2003 were a time of heightened concern over military readiness and how to assess it."--Provided by publisher.

Book Managing Military Readiness

This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an analytic framework that builds from previous work to yield the systematic and defendable readiness analysis that must underlie decisions ranging from budget allocation to force employment and even strategy development. To manage readiness, the Department of Defense (DOD) must balance the supply and demand of deployable forces around the world. The readiness of an individual unit is the result of a series of time-intensive force generation processes that ultimately combine qualified people, working equipment, and unit training to produce military capabilities suitable for executing the defense strategy. Therefore, managing readiness is as much about understanding the complexities of human resource management and the technical details of weapons system availability as it is about measuring the ability of U.S. forces to support the national security strategy. Policymakers, military members and command leaders, plus senior Department of Defense team staff, ROTC, military science, and human resource management students may be interested in this illustrated resource about military readiness prior to national security situation deployments
