Book The Engineer in War

Download or read book The Engineer in War written by P. S. Bond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Engineer in War: With Special Reference to the Training of the Engineer to Meet the Military Obligations of Citizenship In presenting this volume to the engineering profession, the author does not aim to provide a treatise on military field engi neering. A number of excellent manuals and text-books are in existence, most of which are well adapted to study by the civilian engineer. After all, military field engineering, as its name implies, is a practical art and cannot be acquired by study alone. Engineering plays so important a part in all the operations of warfare that it is perhaps no exaggeration to say that modern war is an application of engineering science to the armed conflicts of states. Those who have considered our military policy cannot have failed to observe how greatly it depends upon the voluntary service of our citizens. The rights and privileges of citizenship carry with them the obligation of service to the state. But the mere tacit recognition of a duty does not insure its efficient dis charge. If we acknowledge a duty we must acknowledge the necessity of preparing to perform it. If we do not prepare we are evading our duty. Practical patriotism then ceases to exist and national defense becomes a term without meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Catalogue of the Engineer Department United States Army

Download or read book Catalogue of the Engineer Department United States Army written by United States Engineer Department and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Engineer Department, United States Army: Part I. Subject, Part II. Authors In planning this Catalogue, I have thought it would be better - the Engi neer Department Library being mainly composed of professional books - to arrange similar subjects into groups, and to append a list of the names of authors, rather than to adopt any of the elaborate forms now used for large libraries. Much pains has been taken to place the title of each work in its appropri ate group of subjects, but doubtless there are yet many errors in classification. In the Index to Subjects reference is made in each case to the group in which the subject will be found. In order to find all the works upon any subject it will be well to look through the entire group containing the subject. In this way not only all the special works, but all the general works touching the subject will be discovered. There are, however, exceptions to this rule; 6. G., works important to be consulted in a study of Iron Defenses will'be found in Artillery, Ordnance, etc., and in Metals, etc., as well as in Military Engineering, etc. The lists of additions to the Library, hereafter to be issued periodically, will be in such form that slips, containing the titles of the new books and the names of the authors, may be cut from them and pasted on the blank pages provided fo'r that purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparedness: The American Versus the Military Programme The innumerable facts and figures upon which it is based have been taken, in so far as is possible, from the official documents. The book is by no means purely or chiefly negative. It seeks not only to show the utter inadequacy of the programmes for military preparedness, and the evils Of a genuinely adequate military programme; but also to state concisely the parts of the American programme for preparedness, their support by reason and experience, and the inevitable and insuperable obstacle which each and all of them find in the military programme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fighting Engineers: The Minute Men of Our Industrial Army The fighting engineers Often face greater perils than soldiers in other branches Of the service. Theirs is in no sense a bullet-proof job. Their losses frequently exceed those Of the artillery regiments, the fatalities in which are, in turn, greater in number than those in the aviation corps. When other troops cross an exposed position, for in stance, they usually do SO at the double-quick, and seek shelter as soon as possible. The engineers Often find themselves under fire at a time when they must stick to their work until it is finished.
