Book A History of Modern Wars of Attrition

Download or read book A History of Modern Wars of Attrition written by Carter Malkasian and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-01-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A war of attrition is usually conceptualized as a bloody slogging match, epitomized by imagery of futile frontal assaults on the Western Front of the First World War. As such, many academics, politicians, and military officers currently consider attrition to be a wholly undesirable method of warfare. This first book-length study of wars of attrition challenges this viewpoint. A historical analysis of the strategic thought behind attrition demonstrates that it was often implemented to conserve casualties, not to engage in a bloody senseless assault. Moreover, attrition frequently proved an effective means of attaining a state's political aims in warfare, particularly in serving as a preliminary to decisive warfare, reducing risk of escalation, and coercing an opponent in negotiations. Malkasian analyzes the thought of commanders who implemented policies of attrition from 1789 to the present. His study includes figures central to the study of war, such as the Duke of Wellington, Carl von Clausewitz, B. H. Liddell Hart, General William Slim, General Douglas MacArthur, General Matthew Ridgeway, and General William Westmoreland. While special attention is devoted to the Second World War in the Pacific and the Korean War, this study notes the utility of attrition during the Cold War, as the risk of a Third World War rendered more aggressive strategies unattractive. Increasingly, the United States finds itself facing conflicts that are not amenable to a decisive military solution in which opponents seek prolonged war that will inflict as many casualties as possible on American forces.

Book excerpt: 25,000 enlisted personnel are being separated from the services in their first 6 months, during or shortly after they complete basic training. This report analyzes historical attrition rates for enlisted personnel who serve at least 6 months, but leave military service before completing their first contract terms. It determines (1) the rate and timing of attrition during enlistees' first terms; (2) the extent of DoD's investment in recruiting and training first-term enlistees; (3) reasons for first-term attrition after training; (4) servicemembers' perceptions of quality-of-life factors that contribute to attrition; and (5) actions the services are taking to reduce enlistees' attrition.

Book Analysis of Early Military Attrition Behavior

Download or read book Analysis of Early Military Attrition Behavior written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the influence of pre-service experiences and initial military job match on military attrition of first-term enlisted males during their first six months of service (early attrition). The dynamics of attrition behavior are examined in terms of recent firm-specific human capital and job matching models. The determinants of early attrition are compared across services and with those of civilian job separations of young workers. Some of the conclusions drawn are: enlistees with a history of frequency civilian job changes or a recent spell of unemployment are attrition-prone; aspects of the initial military occupational assignment like individual suitability and satisfaction do not significantly influence early attrition; the early attrition rate of nonhigh-school graduates is nearly twice that of graduates even after controlling for previous work experiences, aptitude, and other variables that influence attrition; and older recruits are more attrition-prone than younger recruits.

Book Organizational and Cultural Causes of Army First Term Attrition

Download or read book Organizational and Cultural Causes of Army First Term Attrition written by James V. Marrone and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army invests significant resources in recruiting, training, and preparing new soldiers. When a soldier does not complete a full contract term, the Army views this as a net loss. The goal of the research summarized in this report is to determine whether organizational factors matter for producing attrition and to generate hypotheses regarding the mechanisms by which organizational factors generate attrition. The authors made use of the random assignment of soldiers to their first battalion to determine whether the "luck of the draw"--The battalion to which the soldier is assigned and the senior noncommissioned officer (NCO) at that battalion -- is directly linked to the observed variation across assignments in eventual first-term outcomes. The authors complemented that analysis with interviews exploring the factors that could be driving differences across units, such as leadership and command culture, availability of soldier supports, management of deployment and training cycles, and installation amenities

Book excerpt: The First World War was too big to be grasped by its participants. In the retelling of their war in the competing memories of leaders and commanders, and the anguished fiction of its combatants, any sense of order and purpose, effort and achievement, was missing. Drawing on the experience of front line soldiers, munitions workers, politicians and those managing the vast economy of industrialised warfare, Attrition explains for the first time why and how this new type of conflict born out of industrial society was fought as it was. It was the first mass war in which the resources of the fully-mobilised societies strained every sinew in a conflict over ideals - and the humblest and highest were all caught up in the national enterprise. In a stunning narrative, this brilliant and necessary reassessment of the whole war cuts behind the myth-making to reveal the determination, organization and ambition on all sides.

Book Attrition in the Army from the Signing of the Enlistment Contract Through 180 Days of Service

Download or read book Attrition in the Army from the Signing of the Enlistment Contract Through 180 Days of Service written by M. A. Fischl and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work addressed attrition from the Army's Delayed Entry Program (DEP) and the training phase of enlistment. The sample was the file of all non- prior service Active Army contracts executed in fiscal years 1992 and 1993, tracked in service through fiscal year 1995. Independent variables were all information the Army routinely collects with the signing of enlistment contracts; the dependent variable was the dichotomous attrited or still serving. The total N of 159,649 was divided into two halves. The first half was used to identify independent variables that discriminated the criterion groups, the second half to determine what the effect would be if those variables were used for pre-enlistment screening. Results indicated that AFQT Category IIIB individuals had attrition rates indistinguishable from IIIA scorers; that non- high school diploma graduates continued to be poor attrition risks, except for those who had participated in military youth programs; and that extremely heavy individuals were poor risks. The information was applied to screen holdout group files and construct plots cross tabulating cases which would have qualified or not, by attrited or still serving." -- Stinet.

Book Military Personnel

Book excerpt: DoD faces a significant challenge in recruiting & retaining the hundreds of thousands of new recruits it enlists each year. The last few years have been difficult for the military services as they have struggled to meet their recruiting goals. This recruiting crisis makes the services' problems with first-term attrition rates even more critical. The early separation of new recruits is costly in that the services' recruiting & training investment in each enlistee averages almost $38,000. This report assesses: (1) the services' responses to recent recruiting shortfalls, & (2) the services' efforts to reduce their historically high attrition rates for first-term enlistees. Book General Creighton Abrams And The Operational Approach Of Attrition In The Vietnam War

Download or read book General Creighton Abrams And The Operational Approach Of Attrition In The Vietnam War written by Major Thom Duffy Frohnhoefer and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Creighton Abrams assumed command of United States forces in the Republic of South Vietnam in the summer of 1968. In recent years, this change in leadership has been viewed as a radical departure from the operational approach implemented by his predecessor General William Westmoreland. This monograph proposes that the United States Armed Forces consistently followed a strategy of attrition from the introduction of battalion sized combat troops in 1965, through the Westmoreland-Abrams transition, and ultimately encouraged the South Vietnamese to follow this strategy during the period of Vietnamization. The National Command Authority and General Westmoreland specifically adopted a strategy of attrition in February of 1966. The Military Assistance Command Vietnam implemented this strategy throughout 1966 and accelerated the strategy in 1967, when General Abrams became General Westmoreland’s deputy commander. The operations were specifically designed to attrite Viet Cong and North Vietnamese regular forces as outlined in the 1966 meeting. The Tet offensive of January 1968 appeared to discredit the strategy of attrition and contributed to the ouster of Westmoreland and his replacement by General Abrams. General Abrams promoted a “one-war” strategy which had the desired end state of population security for the people of South Vietnam. In reality the “one-war” was a multi-tiered strategy of attrition. While the tactics of large scale search and destroy missions were modified, the operational purpose was not. Simultaneously, the Phoenix Program conducted constant low level attrition warfare at the village level to prevent the resurgence of the Viet Cong. While these operations were being conducted the national command authority adopted the policy of Vietnamization in the summer of 1969.
