Book Elements of Military Art and Science

Download or read book Elements of Military Art and Science written by H. W. H. W. Halleck and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following pages were hastily thrown together in the form of lectures, and delivered, during, the past winter, before the Lowell Institute of Boston. They were written without the slightest intention of ever publishing them; but several officers of militia, who heard them delivered, or afterwards read them in manuscript, desire their publication, on the ground of their being useful to a class of officers now likely to be called into military service. It is with this view alone that they are placed in the hands of the printer. No pretension is made to originality in any part of the work; the sole object having been to embody, in a small compass, well established military principles, and to illustrate these by reference to the events of past history, and the opinions and practice of the best generals. Small portions of two or three of the following chapters have already appeared, in articles furnished by the author to the New York and Democratic Reviews, and in a "Report on the Means of National Defence," published by order of Congress.

Book The Art and Science of Military Deception

Download or read book The Art and Science of Military Deception written by Hy Rothstein and published by Artech House. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is said that deception among people in a civilized society is something to be loathed even though it seems to be part of human nature; but deception in war is a virtue. Properly designed and executed, stratagems reduce the horrific costs of war. This book is a comprehensive collection of classic articles on deception, hand-picked and expertly introduced by well-known experts on military deception. The purpose of this book is to set in motion a renaissance for using deception as an instrument of statecraft. The various sections are designed to cumulatively provide sufficient breadth and depth on the subject to satisfy both the novice as well as the expert. Packed with expert commentary, interesting background information, and original readings, this book provides the reader with sufficient knowledge to pursue General Eisenhower’s vision for the proper role of deception in support of the national interest.

Book Notes on Military Science and the Art of War

Download or read book Notes on Military Science and the Art of War written by Joseph Mark Califf and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Military Science and the Art of War These Notes were prepared in an abbreviated form for use in connection with a course of lectures on Military Science and the Art of War, delivered to the Senior Class at the State University of Iowa. The absence of a text-book made something of the kind necessary, and the success that has attended the distribution of hektograph copies of these Notes seems to indicate that they are in the right direction. No attempt has been made in these lectures, which are supplemental to four years of drill, to teach the purely technical part of the military profession. The limited time available for military instruction at colleges indicated to me that the instruction should be broad and general. The aim, therefore, has been to teach these young men how armies are organized and their affairs administered; how men are handled in actual warfare, and how battles are fought; and, in addition, something about the material employed in war - guns, ammunition, torpedoes and explosives: in short, to give them a speaking acquaintance with the Science and Art of War. Nothing especially original is claimed for the subject-matter of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Explaining War and Peace

Download or read book Explaining War and Peace written by Jack Levy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-18 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume focuses on the use of ‘necessary condition counterfactuals’ in explaining two key events in twentieth century history, the origins of the First World War and the end of the Cold War. Containing essays by leading figures in the field, this book analyzes the causal logics of necessary and sufficient conditions, demonstrates the variety of different ways in which necessary condition counterfactuals are used to explain the causes of individual events, and identifies errors commonly made in applying this form of causal logic to individual events. It includes discussions of causal chains, contingency, critical junctures, and ‘powder keg’ explanations, and the role of necessary conditions in each. Explaining War and Peace will be of great interest to students of qualitative analysis, the First World War, the Cold War, international history and international relations theory in general.
