Download or read book Military Aircraft Insignia of the World written by John Cochrane and published by Flight Recorder Publications. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the flying machine was a practical proposition, its military use became evident and governments needed to develop a way of marking their property. Flying a flag was an obvious but ineffective and dangerous solution so painting the representation of the flag was the natural alternative. The first known markings to identify nationality were used in the 1910 Bombing Competition in Vienna where each competing machine carried its national colors. Formalized in 1912, precise shapes and colors of military markings were initially introduced by France closely followed by Romania. Organized by country in 2 volumes, Military Aircraft Insignia of the Worldbrings together global markings from such countries as Abkhazia, Afghanistan, Chad and Iran through to Kenya and Kuwait. Over 500 insignia combine with contemporary photographs and a brief history of the military air activity of that country to provide a wealth of information for the aviation historian and modeller alike.
Download or read book USAF Colors and Markings in the 1990s written by Dana Bell and published by Greenhill Press. This book was released on 1992-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modellers, artists, photographers, and aircraft enthusiasts are continually surprised and confused by the U.S. Air Force's range of modern colour schemes - for example, military depots now stock twelve different grey paints for different aircraft and missions! For over twenty years author Dana Bell has been studying the evolution of American military colours, and this new book, USAF Colors and Markings in the 1990s now offers the subject's first complete and accurate accounting. The book is a first: prior to publication, no other source included all standard schemes and colours. USAF Colors and Markings in the 1990s is the first publication to reveal details of the paint scheme for "Air Force One", and the first publication to reveal the new monochromatic camouflages for bombers, tankers, and transports. Dana Bell contrasts text and drawings from unclassified USAF documents with explanations of variations in field, depot, and factory applications and includes standard data and safety markings. Schematic drawings depict the official schemes for current operational aircraft - some dating back to the 1960s (such as the T-38's all-white trainer colours and the F-111's Southeast Asia camouflage) and others developed in the last few years (including the Strategic Air Command's new camouflages, Pacific Air Forces' new F-15 colours, and Air Force Special Operations Command's Desert Storm camouflages). Appendixes list the Air Force's standard colours (by number, commonly used names and usage). An unique and valuable feature of the book is the inclusion of 30 exact colours as paint chips. USAF Colors and Markings in the 1990s is a standard reference that will find constant use in any aviation library.
Download or read book Aircraft Markings of the Strategic Air Command 1946 1953 written by Rick Rodrigues and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of World War II, the Continental Air Command was redesignated as the Strategic Air Command (SAC) as part of a plan to organize the Army Air Forces around three new organizations based on strategic, tactical and air defense missions. Nearly everything about the SAC was secretive--its capabilities, strengths, order of battle and unit identities. Its aircraft were rarely photographed and those images that were captured revealed little information. This book comprehensively documents SAC tactical aircraft markings from the organization's inception in 1946 to the end of the tail-marking era in April 1953, a period when the marking schemes included large tail markings, vivid squadron identification markings and attractive, colorful unit insignia. The SAC's history is described along with the evolution of its aircraft markings policy and basic definitions of markings terminology. There are individual unit sections on SAC's bombardment, strategic reconnaissance and fighter groups and wings. The text is heavily illustrated and features many never before seen photographs of SAC aircraft in full war paint.
