This is a struggle that has challenged all faiths. And just as other religions have gone through transformations, I believe a new approach to Islam can become normative, reshaping Muslim communities and public policy and allowing us to realize a global dream in which all religious communities can be models for tolerance, pluralism, and social justice. It is time that we rise to a higher expression of Islam, create a new reality, and reclaim the principles of social justice, women's rights, pluralism, and tolerance with which Islam was born. This was the dream with which the Prophet Muhammad brought Islam to the world in the seventh century. ? We can blame colonialism, foreign policy, military aggression, and Islamophobia for the woes of Muslims today and feel powerless to make any changes. Or we can accept responsibility for lifting ourselves out of the morass in which the Muslim community finds itself worldwide. We need to stand up for an expansive, inclusive expression of Islam in the world, one that allows Muslims to live with an authenticity in which our words and actions are in synch with our values. To me, realizing the Islamic dream means creating progressive, inclusive, compassionate, and peaceful communities. -Asra Q. Through commissioned essays and in dialogue with such writers as Huston Smith, Jacob Needleman, Parker Palmer, Robert Bellah, Howard Zinn, Vincent Harding, and others, the project is beginning to sow the seeds of a national conversation. With the publication of these essays, the thinking and writing coming from these gatherings is being offered in a series of publications sponsored by The Fetzer Institute in partnership with Jossey-Bass. In an effort to surface the psychological and spiritual roots at the heart of the critical issues that face the world today, we are extending this inquiry by creating a parallel series focused on Exploring a Global Dream. The first two essays in this series were written by Abdul Aziz Said and Ocean Robbins. The essays and individual volumes and anthologies published in both series will explore and describe the many ways, as individuals and communities and nations, that we can illuminate and inhabit the essential qualities of the global citizen who seeks to live with the authenticity and grace demanded by our times.

Book excerpt: Despite the positive outcomes associated with religion and spirituality (r/s), religion and spirituality can also be sources of struggle. Several studies have found such r/s struggles to be linked with greater levels of distress, while others have found them to be associated with growth-related outcomes. The author proposes that growth from struggles is a prominent experience in Islamic spirituality, referred to as spiritual jihad. The main hypothesis of this work was that incorporating a spiritual jihad mindset would result in greater well-being-related outcomes and buffer against the experience of r/s struggles. The project included two samples of U.S. Muslims: an online sample (N= 280) and a community sample (N= 74). The project provided preliminary evidence of reliability and validity for a new measure of spiritual jihad mindset. Results revealed Islamic religiousness and perceived closeness with God predicted greater endorsement of a spiritual jihad mindset among participants from both samples. A spiritual jihad mindset was positively associated with greater levels of positive religious coping (both samples), spiritual and post-traumatic growth (both samples), and virtuous behaviors (MTurk sample), and negatively associated with depression and anxiety (MTurk sample), and certain vices (MTurk sample).
