Book excerpt: 'Love has its speed. It is a spiritual speed. It is a different kind of speed from the technological speed to which we are accustomed. It goes on in the depth of our life, whether we notice or not, at three miles an hour. It is the speed we walk and therefore the speed the love of God walks.' Once we grasp that in Christ God chooses to walk amongst us, it changes our whole understanding of the speed of love, and the speed of theology. In Three Mile an Hour God, renowned Japanese theologian Kosuke Koyama reflects beautifully on a theme lost to western theology and western culture in general – the need for slowness. With a new foreword from John Swinton
Download or read book A God of Many Understandings written by Todd Miles and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Christianity’s interaction with world religions used to be, for the most part, overseas. Today, “religious others” often live next door. At a changing time when one public prayer spoken during the 2009 U.S. presidential inauguration festivities was addressed to “O god of our many understandings,” the evangelical Christian church should do more than simply dismiss non-Christian religions as pagan without argument or comment. The Church needs a theology of religions that is Christ-honoring, biblically faithful, intellectually satisfying, compassionate, and that will encourage Spirit-powered mission. Oregon-based theology professor Todd L. Miles writes to that end in A God of Many Understandings?, attempting, as the scholar Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen puts it, “to think theologically about what it means for Christians to live with people of other faiths and about the relationship of Christianity to other religions."

Download or read book The Lord Lieutenants and Their Deputies written by Miles Jebb and published by History Press (SC). This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The office of Lord-Lieutenant for a county or area within the United Kingdom has existed for over four centuries. Today it provides a ceremonial presence for the Monarcy on a local basis, spreading a spirit of goodwill and the encouragement of benevolent activity. But in the past it constituted a powerful device by which the Monarch governed the country by means of indirect rule. In particular it was the Lieutenants who controilled the militias, the local defence forces which existed variously as military reserves, as police, and as forces of national unity. This militia was particularly significant in a country which was unusually late in acquiring a regular army. For much of their history the Lord-Lieutenants have also acted as Chief Magistrates, supervising the Justices of the Peace. These lay Justices, like the Lieutenants themselves, have never been salaried officials, serving without emoluments for the maintenance of law and order, albeit for long on a class-restricted basis. Through them the Lieutenants greatly influenced the political direction of their counties, steering their way between local pressures and the demands of national government. In this lively history, the first full-length work on its subject, Miles Jebb has traced the development of the Lieutenancies and their adapation towards the requirements of today, a story of progressive loss of real power but retention of social purpose. He has embellished it with numerous anecdotes about the aristocrats who held the office of Lieutenant together with their Deputies. A comprehensive list of all the Lieutenants in history, compiled by Sir John Sainty, is included as an appendix.

Download or read book Crusader Castle written by Michael S Fulton and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-03-30 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formidable strongholds built by the crusaders are among the most iconic castles of the Middle Ages. These mighty structures offer fascinating insights into the lives of those who built and occupied them, and the role they played in the region’s deep history of conflict. The castle of Kerak, in modern Jordan, is one of the largest, most imposing and best preserved of them all, and Michael Fulton’s detailed, authoritative and highly illustrated account is the ideal guide to it. His close analysis of the fabric of this monumental building, and his description of the centuries of conflict associated with it, make absorbing reading. He takes the reader through the early military history of the castle – from the time it was constructed in the 1140s by Pagan the Butler, through the provocative actions of Reynald of Châtillon and Saladin’s capture of the castle in 1188. He also recounts its later history under Muslim rule, when the castle served as a treasury for the Ayyubid and Mamluk sultans of Egypt. Falling into decline under the Ottomans, Kerak has since regained its importance as a tourist attraction. A part-by-part examination of the castle and surviving elements of the adjoining medieval town allows readers to appreciate the different stages in the development of this incredible structure and to visualize how it evolved and functioned at different points in time. The detailed architectural guide will be an essential reference for readers who have the opportunity to visit the castle and for those who are keen to gain the best possible understanding of it without going to the site.
