Book Good Roads Year Book 1916 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Good Roads Year Book 1916 Classic Reprint written by American Highway Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Roads Year Book, 1916 It seems probable that during 1916 about 8300, 000 000 will be spent on highways and highway bridges in the United States. This 18 the equivalent of nearly one-third of the total expen of the federal government for the fiscal year 1913-1914. It is then apparent that the Good Roads movement is not atrop hied by lack of funds. The real p'roblem 18 that of intelligent and ef fective use of the large funds actually available. It is to this problem that the American Highway Association addresses its activities. The appeal 1s to the average citizen who 13 asked to vote for the issue of highway bonds and who pays road taxes, well as to the expert. It is an appeal for understanding of the facts of the use of moneys devoted to road building and road maintenance in the interest of the largest economicalng results. It is then a campaign of general education of road building methods upon which the American H1gta Asssociation 1s engaged. It 1s not an advocate of a particular method but an exponent and critic of all methods found to be m actual use - the bad as well as the good. It believes m publicity and discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Roads, Vol. 5: A Journal of Highway Research; March 1924 Twenty-nine and six-tenths per cent of the trucks Operated over the highways of_the State were loaded in excess of their rated capacity, but this percentage represented a considerable improvement over the con dition Observed in 1921, a fact that is attributed to the enforcement of the traffic laws of the State. Overloading is a practice in which trucks of all makes and capacities are involved, although the indications are that the $2, and 5% to 71} ton trucks are not overloaded as regularly as the 2 to 5 ton trucks, the small percentage of overloading Of the 5% to 7i ton trucks being attributed in part to the enforcement of the -pound maximum gross load limit of the Connecticut law. Sixty - five and two-tenths per cent of the overloaded vehicles are trucks of 1-ton capacity or less. There is a distinct relation between the width of truck body and the probability of overloading, the percentage of overloads increasing rapidly with increase in bod width. Wit the exception of the trucks of the 5%-ton class the average tri mileage for trucks of all capacities is less than 70 mil)es. The average trip mileage of pneumatic-tired trucks exceeds that Of solid-tired trucks in all capacities except the 7} to 1% ton group. The average net load per vehicle is greater in solid tired trucks Of all capacities than in pneumatic-tired vehicles. The net loads carried on extra-state trucks average greater than the net loads carried by Connecticut trucks. The use of the Connecticut highway system by foreign trucks, on a ton - mile basis, is greater than the use by Connecticut trucks. Connecticut trucks, constituting 89 per cent of the total motor-truck traffic, transport er cent of the total net tonnage and account for 0 y per cent of the total milea e, the latter condition being attributed to the fact t at the movement of foreign trucks is generally a long-distance movement, while the average mileage made by Connecticut trucks is lowered by the higher percentage of. The evolution of American highways from Indian trail to macadamized road is described; the Lancaster Turnpike, the first macadamized road in the United States, being taken as typical of roads of the latter sort. An experience of a noted traveler, Francis Baily, the eminent British astronomer, is presented in chapter two. The third chapter is devoted to the story of Zane's Trace from Virginia to Kentucky across Ohio, and its terminal, the famous Maysville Pike.
