Book Restorative Policing Experiment

Download or read book Restorative Policing Experiment written by Paul McCold and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bethlehem Police Family Group Conferencing Experiment was the first randomized trial of restorative justice in the United States. Moderately serious juvenile offenses were randomly assigned either to court or to a diversionary "restorative policing" process called family group conferencing. Police-based family group conferencing used trained police officers to facilitate a meeting attended by juvenile offenders, their victims, and their respective family and friends. This group would discuss the harm caused by the offender's actions and develop an agreement to repair the harm. The effect of the program was measured through surveys of victims, offenders, offender's parents, and police officers, and also by examining the outcomes of conferences and formal adjudication. The book contains an extended appendix that presents these outcome-based statistics for this seminal program. At a time when research for new restorative justice programs in the 1990s was just beginning to surface, this study provides a valuable picture of the successes of the family conferencing model in its early formation.

Practice guidelines can be vehicles for educating psychiatrists, other medical and mental health professionals, and the general public about appropriate and inappropriate treatments. The series also will identify those areas in which critical information is lacking and in which research could be expected to improve clinical decisions. The Practice Guidelines are also designed to help those charged with overseeing the utilization and reimbursement of psychiatric services to develop more scientifically based and clinically sensitive criteria.

Book Gender Subjectivity and Cultural Work

Download or read book Gender Subjectivity and Cultural Work written by Christina Scharff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it like to work as a classical musician today? How can we explain ongoing gender, racial, and class inequalities in the classical music profession? What happens when musicians become entrepreneurial and think of themselves as a product that needs to be sold and marketed? Gender, Subjectivity, and Cultural Work explores these and other questions by drawing on innovative, empirical research on the working lives of classical musicians in Germany and the UK. Indeed, Scharff examines a range of timely issues such as the gender, racial, and class inequalities that characterise the cultural and creative industries; the ways in which entrepreneurialism – as an ethos to work on and improve the self – is lived out; and the subjective experiences of precarious work in so-called ‘creative cities’. Thus, this book not only adds to our understanding of the working lives of artists and creatives, but also makes broader contributions by exploring how precarity, neoliberalism, and inequalities shape subjective experiences. Contributing to a range of contemporary debates around cultural work, Gender, Subjectivity, and Cultural Work will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of Sociology, Gender and Cultural Studies.

Book excerpt: “A luminous, Marquez-esque tale” (O, The Oprah Magazine) from the New York Times bestselling author of The Museum of Extraordinary Things: a forbidden love story set on a tropical island about the extraordinary woman who gave birth to painter Camille Pissarro—the Father of Impressionism. Growing up on idyllic St. Thomas in the early 1800s, Rachel dreams of life in faraway Paris. Rachel’s mother, a pillar of their small refugee community of Jews who escaped the Inquisition, has never forgiven her daughter for being a difficult girl who refuses to live by the rules. Growing up, Rachel’s salvation is their maid Adelle’s belief in her strengths, and her deep, life-long friendship with Jestine, Adelle’s daughter. But Rachel’s life is not her own. She is married off to a widower with three children to save her father’s business. When her older husband dies suddenly and his handsome, much younger nephew, Frédérick, arrives from France to settle the estate, Rachel seizes her own life story, beginning a defiant, passionate love affair that sparks a scandal that affects all of her family, including her favorite son, who will become one of the greatest artists of France. “A work of art” (Dallas Morning News), The Marriage of Opposites showcases the beloved, bestselling Alice Hoffman at the height of her considerable powers. “Her lush, seductive prose, and heart-pounding subject…make this latest skinny-dip in enchanted realism…the Platonic ideal of the beach read” (Slate.com). Once forgotten to history, the marriage of Rachel and Frédérick “will only renew your commitment to Hoffman’s astonishing storytelling” (USA TODAY).

Book The Burren and the Aran Islands

Download or read book The Burren and the Aran Islands written by Carleton Shepherd Jones and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Burren and the Aran Islands form a region renowned for its geology, flora and archaeology. Possibly the greatest interest is in the archaeology but the ancient monuments are often perceived as shrouded in mystery and beyond explanation. Recent studies have shed considerable light on the functions of these monuments and the people who built them. This book presents these archaeological interpretations in an attractive and engaging manner. After a brief introduction, the book is divided into two parts, the Burren and the Aran Islands. Significant sites are highlighted while "panel" features explain more tangential topics, e.g., how to build a wedge tomb. Contents include Colonization and Early Settlement, From Neolithic to Bronze Age. The Celts, The Arrival of Christianity, Early Medieval Chiefs and their Stone Forts, and finally Later Tower Houses and Military Constructions. In this heavily illustrated book, captions are often extensive and can be read separately or with the text. Overall it can be read cover-to-cover or dipped into. Dr. Jones' writing transforms the dry academic material of excavation reports and archaeological inventories into an engaging and understandable story. He is also the author of "Wild Plants of the Burren & Aran Islands which is available from Dufour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the product of a multi-year initiative, sponsored by the Division of Family Psychology (43) of the American Psychological Association, the Family Institute at Northwestern University, Oxford University Press, and Northwestern University, to bring together the leading researchers in family psychology in five major areas of great social and health relevance -- good marriage, depression, divorce and remarriage, partner violence, and families and physical health. The book embodies a series of five systematically and developmentally informed mini-books or manuals, critically examining the existing research in each area and illuminating new directions for future research. The chapters in each area cover a wide range of distinct issues and diverse populations. Through a pre-publication face-to-face two-day conference, the editors invited each of the authors in each specific domain to collaborate and coordinate their chapters, creating a synergy for the development of new knowledge. Additionally, the editors encouraged the authors to step outside of their own specific research program to reflect on the unique challenges and opportunities in their research domain. The resulting book provides the next generation of theorists, researchers, and therapists with an in-depth and fresh look at what has been done and what remains to be done in each area. If you are a social scientist working in these or related areas, the book will sharpen and stimulate your research. If you are a young researcher or are contemplating entering the field of family psychology, the book lays out pathways and strategies for entering and unraveling the mysteries in each area. Lastly, if you are someone who wants to understand the state of art of research in these very relevant domains, this book takes you to the top of mountain with very best guides and provides a vista that compels and illuminates.

Book Microbial Enzymes and Biotechnology

Download or read book Microbial Enzymes and Biotechnology written by W.M. Fogarty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biotechnology is now one of the major growth areas in science and engineering and within this broad discipline enzyme technology is one of the areas earmarked for special and significant developments. This publication is the second edition of Microbial Enzymes and Biotechnol ogy which was originally published in 1983. In this edition the editors have attempted to bring together accounts (by the relevant experts) of the current status of the major areas of enzyme technology and specifically those areas of actual and/or potential commercial importance. Although the use of microbial enzymes may not have expanded at quite the rate expected a decade ago, there is nevertheless intense activity and considerable interest in the whole area of enzyme technology. Microbial enzymes have been used in industry for many centuries although it is only comparatively recently that detailed knowledge relating to their nature, properties and function has become more evident. Developments in the 1960s gave a major thrust to the use of microbial enzymes in industry. The commercial success of alkaline proteases and amyloglucosidases formed a bed-rock for subsequent research and development in the area.
