Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lion's Roar says, "This book is a treasure of subtle revelation." The view is the wisdom of being empty Meditation is luminosity without fixation Conduct is a continual flow free of attachment Fruition is nakedness bare of any stain This is the first stanza of Milarepa’s Ultimate View, Meditation, Conduct, and Fruition: pith instructions originally sang to the great yogi Rechungpa, Milarepa’s disciple. These teachings are Milarepa’s direct offering to his disciple of his own profound realization, gained after many years of dedicated practice. Karl Brunnhölzl, acclaimed translator and senior teacher at the Nalandabodhi community of Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, calls this hard-earned understanding “kungfu”: “Gong means ‘skillful work,’ ‘hard training,’ or ‘endeavor,’ and fu means ‘time spent...’ The term refers to Milarepa’s diligent and skillful training in the techniques to realize the nature of his mind and benefit countless sentient beings.” Ultimate View, Meditation, Conduct, and Fruition is a work of remarkable depth and clarity. In just five verses, Milarepa gives incisive instructions for progressing and for avoiding pitfalls in the stages of practice: - View: the basis or ground from which the proper meditation, conduct, and fruition of mahamudra can arise - Meditation: the training in or the familiarization with that view - Conduct: the natural outflow of having familiarized with the view in meditation - Fruition: the final outcome of having fully assimilated and realized the view, whose essence is not different from it

Book Authentic Lama Pai Kung Fu

Download or read book Authentic Lama Pai Kung Fu written by David Aram Ross and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2014-07-06 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lama Pai Kung Fu, often called a Tibetan martial art, actually originates on the Western frontier and is a combination of many influences. The late Chan Tai-San, a decorated war hero who was named by China a "living national treasure" relocated to the United States and taught in New York for almost two decades. David Ross, one of the late Chan Tai-San's senior students, has compiled a detailed history of the martial art tradition known as Lion's Roar and a comprehensive overview of both theory and technique. He has updated information that the organization published in the 1990's and also addresses some of the controversies surrounding the tradition. Contents include a discussion of China's western frontier, Vajrayana Buddhism's role in Chinese history, the role of nationalism in early 20th century Chinese martial arts politics and the controversial story of Sing Lung, the Tibetan monk who brought the system to southern China. Much of this information is being made available in English for the first time. In addition, most place names, personal names and technique names in this book are accompanied by their Chinese characters not only for clarity, but further research. The so called "Tibetan martial arts," more properly the Lion's Roar tradition is indeed rare. Chan Tai-San's particular teachings are even rarer. This is the only source for accurate information on Chan Tai San and his methods, written by an adopted disciple who spent sixteen years and was his translator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in English to reveal the principles and techniques of the Tibetan martial art of Sengueï Ngaro • Written by the last holder of the Sengueï Ngaro to receive this teaching from its last surviving master • Reveals the postures, rules, and teachings of this martial art rooted in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition Sengueï Ngaro, which means “the lion’s roar,” is a traditional martial art that was born in the Kham region of Tibet and was secretly handed down by its lineage of warrior monks from the fifteenth century until 1956, when Chinese soldiers destroyed the monastery and massacred all the monks. The superior of the monastery, Lama Bui, survived and fled to the West where he taught it to Lama Tra, the teacher of the author of this book. Today Yogi Tchouzar Pa is the keeper and guardian of this almost vanished tradition. Sengueï Ngaro consists of a series of 86 movements and 10 techniques inspired by animal behavior. It offers both a formidable art of combat and, when combined with its advanced meditation on the ultimate nature of spirituality, a means of spiritual advancement. In The Last Lama Warrior, Yogi Tchouzar Pa provides for the first time in English a fully illustrated and detailed explanation of these postures and their purpose as well as the spiritual principles and traditions on which they are founded. As Yogi Tchouzar Pa explains, “it is only by practicing the physical forms that the depth of the spiritual principles can be understood.”

Book A Brief History of the Martial Arts

Download or read book A Brief History of the Martial Arts written by Jonathan Clements and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'If I had to pick a single general martial arts history book in English, I would recommend A Brief History of the Martial Arts by Dr Jonathan Clements' RICHARD BEITLICH, Martial History Team blog From Shaolin warrior monks to the movies of Bruce Lee, a new history of the evolution of East Asian styles of unarmed combat, from Kung Fu to Ninjutsu Folk tales of the Shaolin Temple depict warrior monks with superhuman abilities. Today, dozens of East Asian fighting styles trace their roots back to the Buddhist brawlers of Shaolin, although any quest for the true story soon wanders into a labyrinth of forgeries, secret texts and modern retellings. This new study approaches the martial arts from their origins in military exercises and callisthenics. It examines a rich folklore from old wuxia tales of crime-fighting heroes to modern kung fu movies. Centre stage is given to the stories that martial artists tell themselves about themselves, with accounts (both factual and fictional) of famous practitioners including China's Yim Wing-chun, Wong Fei-hong, and Ip Man, as well as Japanese counterparts such as Kano Jigoro, Itosu Anko and So Doshin. The history of martial arts encompasses secret societies and religious rebels, with intimate glimpses of the histories of China, Korea and Japan, their conflicts and transformations. The book also charts the migration of martial arts to the United States and beyond. Special attention is paid to the turmoil of the twentieth century, the cross-cultural influence of Japanese colonies in Asia, and the post-war rise of martial arts in sport and entertainment - including the legacy of Bruce Lee, the dilemma of the ninja and the global audience for martial arts in fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key Dzogchen text—available together with its Tibetan commentaries, including from the fifteenth Karmapa—from a preeminent translator. The Aspiration Prayer of Samantabhadra, one of the most famous and often-recited Dzogchen texts, is at once an entreaty by the primordial buddha, Samantabhadra, that all sentient beings recognize the nature of their minds and thus become buddhas, and also a wake-up call by our own buddha nature itself. This monumental text outlines the profound view of Dzogchen in a nutshell and, at the same time, provides clear instructions on how to discover the wisdom of a buddha in the very midst of afflictions. In this volume, Karl Brunnhölzl offers translations of three versions of the Aspiration Prayer and accompanies them with translations of the commentaries by Jigmé Lingpa, the Fifteenth Karmapa, and Tsültrim Sangpo. He offers further contextualization with his rich annotation and appendices, which include additional translation from Jigmé Lingpa, Longchenpa, and Patrul Rinpoche. This comprehensive, comprehensible book illuminates this profound text and greatly furthers our understanding of Dzogchen—and of our own nature.

Download or read book The Eighteen Lohan Skills written by Stuart Alve Olson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book belongs in every martial artist's library, as the Eighteen Lohan Skills are a foundational system for the development of kung fu-not only traditional Shaolin Temple Kung Fu, but for nearly all martial art systems created thereafter. This is true in the applications and functions of the exercises, and in posture names as well. No full translation or serious presentation of these exercises exists in English-until now! In presenting these teachings, Stuart Alve Olson made exclusive use of the original Chinese text by Praying Mantis Kung Fu master Fan Xudong and the later publication Lohan Gong, detailing the exercises by Master Wong Honfan. Included are the original illustrations from Fan Xudong's work and the photographs of Master Wong Honfan performing the exercises. The second section shows the original Shaolin text of these exercises with illustrations. The third section of the book presents the actual eighteen Lohan figures for which the exercises are named, providing a deeper spiritual outlook on the practice of kung fu and meditation. Through its yoga-like stretching aspects, the Eighteen Lohan Skills are not only a qigong practice (combining breathing with body movements), they also train martial applications, and promote internal alchemy skills because they stimulate and develop the internal energies of jing (body/essence), qi (breath/vitality), and shen (mind/spirit). The Eighteen Lohan Skills, then, are a complete system for health, longevity, and spiritual development. This book is a necessity for martial artists, qigong practitioners, and even those who follow Buddhist meditation practices and philosophy.
