Download or read book Mikhail Bakhtin written by Michael F. Bernard-Donals and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-02-24 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The language theory of Mikhail Bakhtin does not fall neatly under any single rubric - 'dialogism,' 'marxism,' 'prosaics,' 'authorship' - because the philosophic foundation of his writing rests ambivalently between phenomenology and Marxism. The theoretical tension of these positions creates philosophical impasses in Bakhtin's work, which have been neglected or ignored partly because these impasses are themselves mirrored by the problems of antifoundationalist and materialist tendencies in literary scholarship. In Mikhail Bakhtin: Between Phenomenology and Marxism Michael Bernard-Donals examines various incarnations of phenomenological and materialist theory - including the work of Jauss, Fish, Rorty, Althusser, and Pecheux - and places them beside Bakhtin's work, providing a contextualised study of Bakhtin, a critique of the problems of contemporary critics, and an original contribution to literary theory.

Book Introducing Bakhtin

Download or read book Introducing Bakhtin written by Sue Vice and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian critic and theorist Mikhail Bakhtin is once again in favor, his influence spreading across many discourses including literature, film, cultural and gender studies. This book provides the most comprehensive introduction to Bakhtin’s central concepts and terms. Sue Vice illustrates what is meant by such ideas as carnival, the grotesque body, dialogism and heteroglossia. These concepts are then placed in a contemporary context by drawing out the implications of Bakhtin’s writings, for current issues such as feminism and sexuality. Vice’s examples are always practically based on specific texts such as the film Thelma and Louise, Helen Zahavi’s Dirty Weekend and James Kelman's How late it was, how late.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The group of intellectuals that surrounded literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin has come to be known as the Bakhtin Circle and have come to be quite influential in the field of cultural criticism. Brandist (Bakhtin Centre, Sheffield U., UK) examines the sources of their thinking, arguing that they were significantly less innovative in thought than many might suppose. He characterizes the Circle's contribution as an ongoing engagement with several intellectual traditions, attempting to put that engagement into the context of the social and political circumstances surrounding them. Book Feminism and Dialogics Charlotte Perkins Meridel Le Sueur Mikhail M Bakhtin

Download or read book Feminism and Dialogics Charlotte Perkins Meridel Le Sueur Mikhail M Bakhtin written by Carolina Núñez Puente and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Rebirth of Dialogue

Download or read book The Rebirth of Dialogue written by James P. Zappen and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogue has suffered a long eclipse in the history of philosophy and the history of rhetoric but has enjoyed a rebirth in the work of Hans-Georg Gadamer, Martin Buber, and Mikhail Bakhtin. Among twentieth-century figures, Bakhtin took a special interest in the history of the dialogue form. This book explores Bakhtin's understanding of Socratic dialogue and the notion that dialogue is not simply a way of persuading others to accept our ideas, but a way of holding ourselves, and others, accountable for all of our thoughts, words, and actions. In supporting this premise, Bakhtin challenges the traditions of argument and persuasion handed down from Plato and Aristotle, and he offers, as an alternative, a dialogical rhetoric that restructures the traditional relationship between speakers and listeners, writers and readers, as a mutual testing, contesting, and creating of ideas. The author suggests that Bakhtin's dialogical rhetoric is not restricted to oral discourse, but is possible in any medium, including written, graphic, and digital.

Book Bakhtin Between East and West

Download or read book Bakhtin Between East and West written by Karine Zbinden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) has had an enormous influence on literary studies and cultural theory. Bakhtin between East and West: Cross-Cultural Transmission looks beyond the concepts of carnival and dialogue and traces for the first time the transformation of the Bakhtin Circle's thought from its introduction to the West in Julia Kristeva's seminal late-1960s theory of intertextuality, through Tzvetan Todorov's landmark study and on to contemporary interpretations. The notion of sociality in all its problematic complexity provides the red thread guiding us through this historical and thematic examination of Western and Russian Bakhtin studies. As a critical evaluation of Bakhtin scholarship across various cultures and a celebration of the vigour of the Circle's legacy, this is an invaluable resource for scholars and students with an interest in Bakhtin and critical theory."

Book excerpt: So far, in the West, the dissemination of Bakhtinian thought has proceeded with little or no awareness of contemporary approaches to Bakhtin in his homeland. This collection offers unprecedented access to leading Russian research in juxtaposition with important Western scholarship on Bakhtin. Taking its cue from Bakhtin as founder of dialogical criticism, Face to Face aims to stimulate dialogue across disciplines and national boundaries.
