Book Therapeutic Fascism

  • Author : Ana Antić
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2016-10-27
  • ISBN : 0191087513
  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book Therapeutic Fascism written by Ana Antić and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War Two, death and violence permeated all aspects of the everyday lives of ordinary people in Eastern Europe. Throughout the region, the realities of mass murder and incarceration meant that people learnt to live with daily public hangings of civilian hostages and stumbled on corpses of their neighbors. Entire populations were drawn into fierce and uncompromising political and ideological conflicts, and many ended up being more than mere victims or observers: they themselves became perpetrators or facilitators of violence, often to protect their own lives, but also to gain various benefits. Yugoslavia in particular saw a gradual culmination of a complex and brutal civil war, which ultimately killed more civilians than those killed by the foreign occupying armies. Therapeutic Fascism tells a story of the tremendous impact of such pervasive and multi-layered political violence, and looks at ordinary citizens' attempts to negotiate these extraordinary wartime political pressures. It examines Yugoslav psychiatric documents as unique windows into this harrowing history, and provides an original perspective on the effects of wartime violence and occupation through the history of psychiatry, mental illness, and personal experience. Using previously unexplored resources, such as patients' case files, state and institutional archives, and the professional medical literature of the time, this volume explores the socio-cultural history of wartime through the eyes of (mainly lower-class) psychiatric patients. Ana Antic examines how the experiences of observing, suffering, and committing political violence affected the understanding of human psychology, pathology, and normality in wartime and post-war Balkans and Europe.

Book Homies A David Gonzales Retrospective

Download or read book Homies A David Gonzales Retrospective written by David Gonzales and published by Dynamite Entertainment. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cruise on a trip through my memories of drawing lowriders and tees, of creating Homies for the last thirty-five years. A pictorial narrative of one artist following his dreams..." Created by David Gonzales, the Homies first appeared as an underground comic strip that debuted in Lowrider Magazine in 1978, a reflection of his friends and lifestyle. At first a group of tightly knit Chicano buddies from East Los Angeles, the Homies expanded their crew to over 300 characters from all different cultures, genres, and even species. In an inner-city world plagued by poverty and oppression, they formed a strong, binding cultural support system that enabled them to overcome negativity and turn to laughter and good times as an antidote for reality. Homies erupted as a mainstream sensation in 1994 when trend-savvy retailer Hot Topic offered Homies shirts for sale, rapidly becoming popular with the youth market. Following on the heels of a successful T-shirt run, Homies was licensed for figurines in the vending machine toy industry, where all sales records were broken, with over 150 million figurines sold worldwide. The licensing program soon spread to products such as action figures, remote-control and die-cast cars, notebooks, posters, plush, Halloween masks, video games, music, and more, carried by specialty and mass retailers everywhere. History of the Homies is a triumphant celebration of the turbulent times, remarkable artistry, and youthful street culture of a pop culture phenomenon, including hundreds of pictures and a complete guide to Homies figurines.
