Book Refractory Carbides

Download or read book Refractory Carbides written by G. V. Samsonov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present stage of technological development makes new and ever more complex demands on materials that have to work under conditions of high temperature and pressure, in high vacuum, and in corrosive media. In consequence special importance is now at tached to the refractory compounds of transition metals of groups IV to VI with such nonmetals as boron, carbon, silicon, and nitro gen. These compounds possess high melting points, great hard ness, and high refractory and corrosion-resisting properties. The most widely used and important compounds of this type from a technological point of view are the carbides, which are already fairly widely used in various fields of technology. The present collection of papers contains the results of re cent investigations into methods of producing high-purity carbides and also components made of the carbides and their alloys. Great attention has been paid to the study of a wide range of properties of the carbides and of alloys based on them, viz., the electro-and thermophysical, thermodynamic, mechanical, and chemical prop erties, and also to the utilization of the carbides as wear-and abrasion-resistant materials. In contrast to many previous publications dealing with carbides, the results presented in this collection relate to the properties of carbides having a definite phase composition, corresponding to a higher degree of purity 0 In some of the contributions the physical and chemical properties of the carbides are interpreted in terms of certain solid-state models and concepts concerning the types of chemical bonding in these compounds.

Book Unconventional Optical Elements for Information Storage Processing and Communications

Download or read book Unconventional Optical Elements for Information Storage Processing and Communications written by Emanuel Marom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of optics has been accelerating at an unprecedented rate, due both to the tremendous growth of the field of fiber-optic communications, and to the improvement of optical materials and devices. Throughput capabilities of fiber systems are accelerating faster than Moore's law, the famous growth rate of silicon chip capability, which has propelled that industry relentlessly over decades. In addition, new optical storage techniques push the limits of information density, with an ever decreasing cost per bit of storage. Economic investment in photonics is at an all-time high. At the same time, other fields of optics, adaptive optics for instance, are bringing new capabilities to more classical applications such as astronomical imaging. New lasers continue to be developed, with applications in display, sensing, and biomedicine following at ever-shorter intervals after the initial discoveries. Given this background, the NATO Mediterranean Dialog Advanced Research Workshop on Unconventional Optical Elements for Information Storage, Processing and Communications, held in Israel on October 19-21, 1998, came at an opportune moment in the history of optics. Its aim was to overview the current state-of-the-art and encourage cooperation in the Mediterranean region, with a view to highlighting and enhancing the existing potential for further development and innovation. The workshop included participants from Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA.

Book Engineering for Sustainable Future

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents selected papers from the 18th International Conference on Global Research and Education, Inter-Academia 2019, held in Budapest and Balatonfüred on September 4–7, 2019. The main goal of the conference was to provide an international forum for reviewing and assessing recent trends in both fundamental and applied research. In addition to sparking interest in recent research findings, the conference aimed to strengthen cooperation among the partners of the Inter-Academia community in the pursuit of new theoretical and practical research advances. The book contains a selection of papers based on lectures presented at the Inter-Academia 2019 conference and covering hot and challenging topics in the fields of machine intelligence and computer science, modeling and simulation, measurement, monitoring, and identification, electronics and nanoelectronics, bio- and environmental engineering, chemical processes and material science, together with related educational aspects. Accordingly, it offers a valuable resource for the global scientific community.

Download or read book Growth of Crystals written by E.I. Givargizov and published by Springer. This book was released on 1991-03-31 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, as the previous ones, consists primarily of review artic1es. However, it also contains a large quantity of original material on the growth of crystals and films. Priority is given to experimental work. Only two artic1es are concerned exc1usively with the theory of crystal growth. Theoretical aspects are treated in several others. This volume is divided into three parts. Part I, "Epitaxy and Transformations in Thin Films," stems from the current broad application of lasers and optical effects in general to crystal growth (in particular, the growth of thin films). The first three artic1es of the book are devoted to this topic. In particular, the laser pulse vaporization method, for which a comparatively slow deposition rate is typical (which should not always be viewed as a drawback), is distinguished by the unique kinetics of the initial growth stages. These are not entirely explained. However, this method is completely suitable for oriented or generally ordered growth of films under otherwise equal conditions. Another artic1e of this section is based on use of ultrashort (down to picosecond) laser pulses. It emphasizes the nonequilibrium processes of crystallization and decrystallization that are characteristic for such influences. In particular, material heated above its melting point and metastable states in the semiconductor melt exhibit these qualities.

Download or read book Growth of Crystals written by N. N. Sheftal' and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tenth volume completes the first series of "Growth of Crystals," which began in 1957. The sources of the volumes are as follows: for Vol. I, the 1st All-Union Conference on Crystal Growth; for Vol. 3, the 2nd; and for Vols. 5 and 6, the 3rd; Vols. 7 and 8 reported the International Symposium on Crystal Growth at the Seventh International Crystallography Con gress, and Vol. 9 the 1969 symposium on crystal growth dedicated to E. S. Fedorov; Vols. 2, 4, and 10 did not originate in conferences. The main problem that largely occupied the conferences and symposia and also the inter mediate volumes was that of real crystal formation, as well as the relation of crystal growth theory to practical crystal production. This tenth volume, which completes this first series, is to a considerable extent a survey. It contains more extensive theoretical and experimental original papers, as well as some shorter papers dealing with particular but important aspects of real crystal formation. The volume opens with a paper by V. V. Voronkov, which deals with the structure of crystal surface in Kossel's model. The model as proposed by Kossel is extremely simple. It deals qualitatively with the basic trends in the growth of an idealized crystal in its own va por at absolute zero, and naturally does not allow one to perform quantitative studies on com plex real processes.
