Book excerpt: Migration of health workers is one of the most alarming phenomena of human mobility having diverse implications, especially for the countries of origin, whereupon it deserves an exclusive consideration. It can affect the development of a country as well as the actual health service delivery. The current trend suggests that health professional migration is apparently taking place only from poor countries to rich countries. This poses a great challenge to global healthcare. One of the toughest challenges posed by this kind of sectoral population mobility is that such a trend may impede the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as these goals are set focusing mainly on the countries from where migration of health professionals is taking place on massive scales. The present book is expected to provide an appropriate insight into these and allied issues pertinent to the emergency, which is currently being considered as one of the top ten issues pertaining to migration. Structured in two sections, the book talks about the current dynamics of migration of health professionals and tries to delineate the challenges emanating from the phenomenon. Further, it also explains the phenomenon of health professionals mobility in cross-country perspectives to see how each geographic setting is getting affected. The book is expected to be of use for policy planners, professionals in aid agencies, NGOs and other institutions working in this area and general readers.

Today, about one-quarter of the U.S. population consists of immigrants or the children of immigrants. Given the sizable representation of immigrants in the U.S. population, their health is a major influence on the health of the population as a whole. On average, immigrants are healthier than native-born Americans. Yet, immigrants also are subject to the systematic marginalization and discrimination that often lead to the creation of health disparities. To explore the link between immigration and health disparities, the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity held a workshop in Oakland, California, on November 28, 2017. This summary of that workshop highlights the presentations and discussions of the workshop.
