Download or read book Social protection and migration written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication was developed by the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (UNU-Merit) in partnership with FAO. The policy paper is conceived as a framing paper, which conceptualizes the relationship between social protection, migration, and rural development, and strengthens these synergies for FAO’s programming. The relationship between social protection, migration, and rural development is critical to the FAO mandate to end hunger for all. In its capacity as an organization working across emergency and development contexts, FAO is well positioned to promote the synergies that exist at the intersection of social protection and migration in rural contexts. Accordingly, the Social Protection and Migration Policy paper seeks to strengthen migration and social protection synergies in FAO’s programming by identifying linkages between social protection and migration from currently available literature; highlighting illustrative examples of areas where FAO has already started to work at the intersection of migration and social protection and offering ways of how FAO can further mainstream migration-social protection synergies.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981 as part of the Urbanization in Developing Countries series, Latin American Urbanization presents an in-depth look at a process of social change in an important region of the Third World. In this study, Professors Butterworth and Chance concentrate on the rural-urban migration of the lower classes and the adaptation of migrants to city life. Drawing together in a coherent manner studies from several disciplines such as demographic, sociocultural, economic and political dimensions of urbanization, this book will interest a variety of scholars in the social sciences and the humanities.

Download or read book Liberty and Equality in Caribbean Colombia 1770 1835 written by Aline Helg and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-10-12 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Brazil and the United States, Colombia has the third-largest population of African-descended peoples in the Western hemisphere. Yet the country is commonly viewed as a nation of Andeans, whites, and mestizos (peoples of mixed Spanish and indigenous Indian ancestry). Aline Helg examines the historical roots of Colombia's treatment and neglect of its Afro-Caribbean identity within the comparative perspective of the Americas. Concentrating on the Caribbean region, she explores the role of free and enslaved peoples of full and mixed African ancestry, elite whites, and Indians in the late colonial period and in the processes of independence and early nation building. Why did race not become an organizational category in Caribbean Colombia as it did in several other societies with significant African-descended populations? Helg argues that divisions within the lower and upper classes, silence on the issue of race, and Afro-Colombians' preference for individual, local, and transient forms of resistance resulted in particular spheres of popular autonomy but prevented the development of an Afro-Caribbean identity in the region and a cohesive challenge to Andean Colombia. Considering cities such as Cartagena and Santa Marta, the rural communities along the Magdalena River, and the vast uncontrolled frontiers, Helg illuminates an understudied Latin American region and reintegrates Colombia into the history of the Caribbean.

Download or read book Migrants and Cities written by Margit Fauser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migrants have organized at all times and in all cities and places. The processes of their accommodation, however, differ, with local authorities and other state institutions playing an important role in these processes. Offering comprehensive empirical insights both from recent sites of immigration in Southern Europe, as well as from places of more established immigration in the north, this book examines the accommodation of migrant organizations in different cities and the factors that affect this process. It thus sheds light on the manner in which the interplay of immigration regime, national integration policy and local responses shape the differing patterns and trajectories observed in the formation and action of migrant organizations across Europe.
