Download or read book Commercial Poultry Production on Maryland s Lower Eastern Shore written by Solomon I. Omo-Osagie and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2012 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commercial Poultry Production on Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore traces the beginnings and development of commercial poultry production in this very important region. African Americans were mainly involved in poultry production on the labor supply side, which was crucial to the expansion of the industry. Commercial poultry production expanded through vertical integration, acquisitions, mergers, and consolidations and became the dominant economic activity on the Lower Maryland Eastern Shore in the 1950s. Throughout the years, the industry has intermixed with public health and the environment. These integrations were problematic on several fronts, as the industry sought to maintain a much-needed economic lifeline for the region and yet protect public health and ensure a sustainable environment at the same time. In all, commercial poultry production has continued to fuel the local economy of the Lower Maryland Eastern Shore since its inception in the 1930s.

Download or read book Maryland in Black and White written by Constance B. Schulz and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compelling photographs of people and places throughout Maryland during one of the nation's most anxious decades. Between 1935 and 1943, the United States government commissioned forty-four photographers to capture American faces, along with living and working conditions, across the country. Nearly 180,000 photographs were taken—4,000 in Maryland—and they are now preserved in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Constance B. Schulz presents a selection of these images in Maryland in Black and White. Maryland in the 1930s and early ‘40s truly represented a microcosm of America, a middle ground where beach and mountain, north and south, urban and rural, black and white, farmer and businessman, rich and poor, young and old met. This period also witnessed a turning point in the state’s history. The pace and nature of change varied from region to region, but even in areas that seemed most resistant to it—the Chesapeake Bay, where oyster tongers harvested their catch using methods unchanged for centuries, or the mountains and streams of Garrett County, where the seasons timelessly repeated themselves—the momentum toward a modern economy, influenced if not dominated by urban and national concerns, had significant impact. Within these pages, the farms and coal fields of 1930s and '40s Western Maryland, the tobacco fields of Southern Maryland, watermen in wooden boats along the Eastern Shore, and smiling couples dancing at a wartime senior prom come back to life. These photographs reveal places we know but scarcely recognize and give us another look at the people of "the greatest generation."
Download or read book Landscapes of Care written by Thurka Sangaramoorthy and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful work on rural health in the United States examines the ways immigrants, mainly from Latin America and the Caribbean, navigate the health care system in the United States. Since 1990, immigration to the United States has risen sharply, and rural areas have seen the highest increases. Thurka Sangaramoorthy reveals that that the corporatization of health care delivery and immigration policies are deeply connected in rural America. Drawing from fieldwork that centers on Maryland's sparsely populated Eastern Shore, Sangaramoorthy shows how longstanding issues of precarity among rural health systems along with the exclusionary logics of immigration have mutually fashioned a "landscape of care" in which shared conditions of physical suffering and emotional anxiety among immigrants and rural residents generate powerful forms of regional vitality and social inclusion. Sangaramoorthy connects the Eastern Shore and its immigrant populations to many other places around the world that are struggling with the challenges of global migration, rural precarity, and health governance. Her extensive ethnographic and policy research shows the personal stories behind health inequity data and helps to give readers a human entry point into the enormous challenges of immigration and rural health.
