L'expérience vécue permet d'aller au-delà de la simple description. Elle permet de comprendre et de présenter ce qui fait du sens pour des personnes qui n'ont pas souvent l'occasion de s'exprimer. La discipline infirmière ne se pratique pas toujours dans des milieux conventionnels. La spécialité de psychiatrie légale constitue un bon exemple de pratique marginale, alors qu'elle se situe au carrefour entre le milieu correctionnel et le milieu hospitalier (plus spécifiquement l'hôpital psychiatrique). Cet environnement unique est le site d'une pratique infirmière tout aussi unique, mais malheureusement peu connue des diverses sphères de la société. L'étude du vécu du personnel infirmier permet de mieux connaitre les défis, les souffrances et les mécanismes d'adaptation vécus par ces professionnels. Plusieurs recherches scientifiques se sont intéressées au vécu de la clientèle dans le milieu psycholégal, mais très peu se sont intéressés aux infirmiers.ères. Cette étude permet de connaitre le quotidien du personnel infirmier en milieu psycholégal, notamment au regard de leurs interactions avec leur environnement, leurs collègues de travail, l'administration, la communauté infirmière et la société en général. Bien que cela puisse être un sujet tabou au sein des milieux de psychiatrie légale, une meilleure compréhension de l'expérience vécue par le personnel infirmier pourrait être porteuse de solutions en lien avec les conditions de travail difficiles des infirmiers.ères. Finalement, cette recherche s'attarde également aux influences du genre, afin de mieux saisir si cette expérience est vécue différemment par les infirmiers et les infirmières.
