Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Midwifery, Vol. 1 There he began to study Midwifery under E. C. J. Von Siebold, and soon developed a strong liking for this department of Medicine. In 1852 he visited Vienna, and afterwards England, Scotland, and Ireland, in order to study the methods of procedure in the Lying-in Institutions of these countries. Shortly after his return to Gottingen he published(1858) an excellent Compendium of Midwifery, and in 1860 was appointed Professor Extraordinarius of Midvifery in the University. The following year he was called to Freiburg as Prof. Ordinarius, and two years afterwards(1864) removed to Konigsberg, which however he again quitted on being appointed(1865) Professor at Breslau. In 1870 in conjunction with Crede, S. started the Archiv fr Gynakologie, and throughout his life was a constant and valuable contributor. Meanwhile he was accumulating a large practice, which however did not prevent him from devoting much time to the great work with which his name is mainly associated, viz. the Lehrbuch der Geburtshulfe, of which the following pages are a translation. The Lehrbuch appeared in 1878, and became so popular that in 1880 and edition was called for, and S. was far advanced with its preparation at the time of his death. Symptoms of failing health appeared in the summer of 1880, but so great was S. 's enthusiasm for his work, that it was with difficulty that he could be persuaded to abandon it for a season. Book The Science and Art of Midwifery Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Science and Art of Midwifery Classic Reprint written by William Thompson Lusk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 834 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Art of Midwifery The third edition of this work, published in 1885, was intended to present to the reader a picture of the most advanced obstetrical teachings of that date. In the brief interval, however, that has elapsed since then the changes that have taken place in both the theory and practice of obstetrics have made it necessary for me to present to the profession what is essentially a new book. Thus many modifications in the theory have resulted from more careful observations in anatomy and pathology, and from fruitful physio logical investigations. It has been my endeavor to interweave aseptic precautions with all branches of obstetric art without, how ever, insisting upon pedantic measures which experience has shown to be needless. But the noblest conquests of the past years have been the result of the employment of modern surgery for the relief or removal of a host of complications formerly regarded as beyond the pale of human help. In making needed alterations I have not felt it obligatory when new discoveries have destroyed the value of former deductions to retain these in order to maintain a reputation for consistency. I thank the medical press and the medical profession of this country and Great Britain for the flattering welcome they have hitherto extended to this treatise, and trust that in its new form it may command a like degree of favor. For the preparation of the index special thanks are once more due to my friend Dr. W. H. Flint, whose painstaking accuracy will be evident to those who have occasion to consult these pages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendious System of Midwifery: Chiefly Designed to Facilitate the Inquiries of Those Who May Be Pursuing This Branch of Study; Illustrated by Occasional Cases Errors in premises must almost necessarily lead to errors in de duction; hence, the too exclusive reliance on the powers Of na ture to overcome all the obstacles connected with parturition hence the almost total disregard of the first, and most important principles in the art of midwifery! These errors doubtlessly ori giusted in ignorance; and were perhaps at first excusable from this cause: but how reprehensible do they become now, since the powers of nature are better calculated, and the resources of art better understood! In what light, then, should we View writers, who still inculcate such doctrines - teachers who make the whole art of midwifery consist, in doing nothing! Book Rotunda Midwifery for Nurses and Midwives Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rotunda Midwifery for Nurses and Midwives Classic Reprint written by G. T. Wrench and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rotunda Midwifery for Nurses and Midwives When teaching nurses at the Rotunda Hospital I was often impressed with the difficulty they had in under standing the manuals provided for them. This book is intended to give to nurses and midwives the knowledge they actually need as clearly and practically as possible. Thus the anatomy of organs and bones has not been divorced from their function, but the two being interdependent are described together, in order that anatomy may not be learnt in parrot fashion, but that its bearing on the processes of childbearing may be immediately appreciated. In a similar manner, as practice has a special power of appeal, the various conditions that may be met have been grouped and classified from a practical point of view, so that the main duties of a midwife may be remembered with the help of a few simple rules. Technical language has been avoided as far as possible, but when its use is necessary, it has been fully explained in the text and the derivation of the words has been given. It is hoped that in this way the subject of midwifery may present fewer difficulties for nurses and midwives, but it must be remembered that reading is only an adjunct to careful observation of cases, and that know ledge becomes more permanently assimilated, if in the interludes of reading and practical work, pupils ponder on and commit to the memory of their thoughts that which they have read or seen. Book A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by William S. Playfair and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Science and Practice of Midwifery, Vol. 1 of 2 Those who have studied the progress of Midwifery know that there is no department of medicinein which more has been done of late years, and none in which modern views of practice differ more widely from those prevalent only a short time ago. The Authors object has been to place in the hands of his readers an epitome of the science and practice of midwifery which embodies all recent advances. He is aware that on certain important points he has recommended practice which not long ago would have been considered heterodox in the extreme, and which, even now, will not meet with general approval. He has, however, the satisfaction of knowing that he has only done so after very deliberate reflection, and with the profound conviction that such changes are right, and that they will stand the test of experience. He has endeavoured to dwell especially on the practical part of the subject, so as to make the work a useful guide in this most anxious and responsible branch of the profession. It is admitted by all, that emergencies and difficulties arise more often in this than in any other branch of practice; and there is no part of the practitioners work which requires more thorough knowledge or greater experience. It is, moreover, a lamentable fact that -students generally leave their schools more ignorant of obstetrics than of any other subject. Book A Handbook of Midwifery Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Midwifery Classic Reprint written by W. R. Dakin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Midwifery This work is intended for students and junior practitioners. The subject is arranged in two divisions, those of Physiology and Pathology. In each of these the events of Pregnancy, Labour, the Puerperal Period, and those connected with recent birth are dealt with in turn. I have endeavoured to omit nothing that has a practical bearing, and at the same time to avoid the waste of space and the confusion of the reader's mind which would be incurred by inserting all the most recent pathological speculations and the newest details of treatment. With this object it has been my care to read through, or at least examine, all available treatises and monographs dealing, with each portion of the subject, to allow the facts, if any appeared, to undergo mental digestion, and then to write the paragraph or chapter dealing with the particular question. The main part of the matter contained and the opinions expressed in the text is, however, derived from the experience I have gained from my own cases, principally in hospital, and from the cases of others either seen by me or described by observers worthy of confidence.
