Book Southern Manhattan Coastal Protection Study Evaluating the Feasibility of a Multi Purpose Levee

Download or read book Southern Manhattan Coastal Protection Study Evaluating the Feasibility of a Multi Purpose Levee written by Jesse M. Keenan and published by New York City Economic Development Corporation . This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Manhattan Coastal Protection Study: Evaluating the Feasibility of an MPL report (the “Feasibility Study”) was conducted by a team led by ARCADIS U.S., Inc.. The team also included HR&A Advisors, Inc., FXFOWLE Architects, WXY Studio, Sive, Paget & Riesel P.C., AKRF, Inc., Ocean and Coastal Consultants, and Jesse M. Keenan (the “Study Team”). The Feasibility Study focused on an approximately 1.3-mile span of the eastern edge of Manhattan, from the Battery Maritime Building to Pier 35 (the “Study Area”). The Feasibility Study also analyzed adjacent areas that would be integral to a comprehensive flood protection solution for Southern Manhattan. The Feasibility Study concluded that: 1) An multi-protection levee (MPL) is technically feasible in the Study Area and will not induce flooding either in adjacent neighborhoods or across the East River. 2) An MPL is legally feasible within the existing regulatory framework. However, the required permitting/approvals processes will be complex and lengthy. 3) An MPL is financially feasible and could not only be self-financing, but could also help finance complementary flood protection investments in Southern Manhattan. The MPL options and conceptual development programs evaluated within the report were defined for feasibility analysis purposes; the findings within do not comprise a development proposal. The process to articulate, assess, and advance an actual development proposal for an MPL will be long and complex, and will require extensive local stakeholder engagement and coordination. The commitment to effectively address the known climate change risks must remain as the core driver of that process, especially regarding all future work that builds upon and follows up on this Feasibility Study. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5246133

Download or read book Cities of Farmers written by Julie C. Dawson and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full-scale food production in cities: is it an impossibility? Or is it a panacea for all that ails urban communities? Today, it’s a reality, but many people still don’t know how much of an impact this emerging food system is having on cities and their residents. This book showcases the work of the farmers, activists, urban planners, and city officials in the United States and Canada who are advancing food production. They have realized that, when it’s done right, farming in cities can enhance the local ecology, foster cohesive communities, and improve the quality of life for urban residents. Implementing urban agriculture often requires change in the physical, political, and social-organizational landscape. Beginning with a look at how and why city people grew their own food in the early twentieth century, the contributors to Cities of Farmers examine the role of local and regional regulations and politics, especially the creation of food policy councils, in making cities into fertile ground for farming. The authors describe how food is produced and distributed in cities via institutions as diverse as commercial farms, community gardens, farmers’ markets, and regional food hubs. Growing food in vacant lots and on rooftops affects labor, capital investment, and human capital formation, and as a result urban agriculture intersects with land values and efforts to build affordable housing. It also can contribute to cultural renewal and improved health. This book enables readers to understand and contribute to their local food system, whether they are raising vegetables in a community garden, setting up a farmers’ market, or formulating regulations for farming and composting within city limits. Book A Life in Three Lands

Download or read book A Life in Three Lands written by Jacques Guiton and published by Branden Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no surprise that Jacques Guiton, an architect who subscribes to Le Corbusier's idea of harmony as a controlling principle of design, should have produced a balanced and shapely book of memoirs. Between his early experiences at his grandfather's French country place to his retirement years at his own similar old farmhouse in America, Guiton chronicles events in Paris, Brittany, German prison camps and America. His prose is clean and clear and draws on all the senses.

Book Resilient Downtowns

Download or read book Resilient Downtowns written by Michael Burayidi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resilient Downtowns provides a guide to communities in reviving and redeveloping their core districts into resilient, thriving neighborhoods. While the National Main Street program’s four-point approach of organization, promotion, economic restructuring, and design has been standard practice for cities seeking to rejuvenate their downtowns for decades there is disquiet among downtown managers and civic leaders about the versatility of the program. Resilient Downtowns provides communities with the "en-RICHED" approach, a four-step process for downtown development, which focuses on residential development, immigration strategies, civic functionality, heritage tourism, and good design practice. Examples from fourteen small cities across the US show how this process can revitalize downtowns in any city.
