Book A Bibliography of Modern Arthuriana 1500 2000

Download or read book A Bibliography of Modern Arthuriana 1500 2000 written by Ann F. Howey and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2006 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotated bibliography of the Arthurian legend in modern English-language fiction, not only in literary texts, but in television, music, and art. The legend of Arthur has been a source of fascination for writers and artists in English since the fifteenth century, when Thomas Malory drew together for the first time in English a variety of Arthurian stories from a number of sources to form the Morte Darthur. It increased in popularity during the Victorian era, when after Tennyson's treatment of the legend, not only authors and dramatists, but painters, musicians, and film-makers found a sourceof inspiration in the Arthurian material. This interdisciplinary, annotated bibliography lists the Arthurian legend in modern English-language fiction, from 1500 to 2000, including literary texts, film, television, music, visual art, and games. It will prove an invaluable source of reference for students of literary and visual arts, general readers, collectors, librarians, and cultural historians--indeed, by anyone interested in the history of the waysin which Camelot has figured in post-medieval English-speaking cultures. Book Delphi Complete Poetical Works of John Masefield Illustrated

Download or read book Delphi Complete Poetical Works of John Masefield Illustrated written by John Masefield and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2022-06-15 with total page 4142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English Poet Laureate from 1930 until 1967, John Masefield produced a wide range of literary masterpieces, encompassing ballads, nature poetry, adventure novels, social dramas and mythological children’s works. His long narrative poems, including the much-celebrated ‘The Everlasting Mercy’ (1911), shocked the literary orthodoxy of the time with its colloquial expressions and coarseness of themes. Masefield is revered for his endeavour to make poetry a popular art and for his influence on the Georgian movement, advocating respect for formalism, as well as bucolic and romantic subject matter. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting. For the first time in publishing history, this volume presents Masefield’s complete poetical works, with related illustrations and the usual Delphi bonus material. Book The Arthurian Legend

Download or read book The Arthurian Legend written by Margaret J. C. Reid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1938, this study explores the reception of the mythology of King Arthur by modern poets and playwrights. More specifically, the author explores the lineage of the legendary material since the first edition of Malory in 1485, exploring a vast range of artists who have made use of it: Spenser, Milton and Dryden, Wordsworth, Tennyson, Hardy, Matthew Arnold, and even Wagner. The conclusion is that although the myths have never occupied as central a place as the Classical or Biblical heritage, nonetheless the tales of King Arthur will continue to encapsulate romantic ideals and aspirations.

Book John Masefield

Download or read book John Masefield written by John Masefield and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1994 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected edition of Masefield's Arthurian poetry including previously unpublished material. Introduction by the author. At the end of the nineteenth century, a homeless runaway teenager in New York found a job in a bar and discovered Malory. So began the lifelong interest of the future Poet Laureate, John Masefield (1878-1967), in the story of KingArthur. After becoming a popular, successful narrative poet and playwright, Masefield turned to the Arthurian material in earnest, producing the verse drama Tristan and Isolt in 1927 and Midsummer Night a year laterwith its Arthurian cycle. All29 of Masefield's previously published Arthurian poems from the Ballad of Sir Bors (1903) to Caer Ocvran (1966) are collected here in addition to the full-length tragi-comedy When Good King Arthur. Also included are nine poems never before published which, together with prose notes, reveal Masefield undertaking an ambitious retelling of the Arthurian myth.
