Book Midst Africa s Southern Realms

Download or read book Midst Africa s Southern Realms written by Johan Hefer and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Settlers of 1820 The impact of the 1820 Settlers on South Africa has been immense. Their likes included great statesmen, fighters for civil rights and other people who made South Africa what it is today (for good and bad). Why were these settlers so important? They were a very large homogeneous group that came from a far more liberal population than what had been in South Africa. The Dutch/German immigrants from the VOC (Dutch East Indies) period were literally employees. They then asked permission to stay in the country and many tried to get as far away from the "Company" as they could. The educational opportunities were almost non-existent, especially in frontier areas. Very few were people were literate. The VOC was trying to make profits not educate their people. In the colony, before British rule, the population had very few civil rights and almost no representation in government. These British Settlers were generally well educated (As can be seen in some of the parts of this book). They believed in a free press and representative government. They came to South Africa to act as a buffer in the border areas but ended up changing the colony in fundamental ways. We provide an opportunity for some of these settlers to tell their stories. There are also short biographies and histories of other aspects the lives of the settlers. The main part of this book is the recounting of the reminiscences of Rev HH Dugmore about the 1820 Settlers. It also includes letters from John Mandy to his mother in England, extracts from the reminiscences of Thomas Pringle and George Thompson. A recounting of the stories of James Reed and Mrs Webb's encounter with raggy toothed sharks are also included. This volume will provide you with first-hand accounts of these peoples lives Midst Africa's Southern Wilds. In this year, which is the 200 year anniversary of the British Settlers of 1820 coming to South Africa, a book of this nature is apt. We hope that you will enjoy the selection of texts we have put together.

Book Origin and Evolution of the Cape Mountains and Karoo Basin

Download or read book Origin and Evolution of the Cape Mountains and Karoo Basin written by Bastien Linol and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the latest research on the geological, geochemical, geochronological, biological, and geomorphic evolution of the unique and relatively pristine landscape of the Cape Mountains and the Karoo Basin, a region in South Africa that is currently being targeted for shale gas exploration and development. With up-to-date graphics, maps, drill-core and seismic data, it offers the latest observations and synthesis, and highlights areas of ongoing research. The work presented also considers a wider connection of the Cape-Karoo system to other basins in Central Gondwana, including South America, thus following in the footsteps of A. L. du Toit. Clearly, there is still much to be learned before shale gas development can be considered, and this book provides some timely perspectives.

Book The Rise of an African Middle Class

Download or read book The Rise of an African Middle Class written by Michael O. West and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-19 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at Africans who challenged the status quo in colonial Zimbabwe: “Impeccable and original scholarship.” —American Historical Review Tracing their quest for social recognition from the time of Cecil Rhodes to Rhodesia’s unilateral declaration of independence, Michael O. West shows how some Africans were able to avail themselves of scarce educational and social opportunities in order to achieve some degree of upward mobility in a society that was hostile to their ambitions. Though relatively few in number and not rich by colonial standards, this comparatively better-off class of Africans challenged individual and social barriers imposed by colonialism to become the locus of protest against European domination. This extensive and original book opens new perspective into relations between colonizers and colonized in colonial Zimbabwe. “Offers an extremely sophisticated, nuanced view of the social and political construction of an African middle class in colonial Zimbabwe.” —Elizabeth Schmidt

Book Black Imagination and the Middle Passage

Download or read book Black Imagination and the Middle Passage written by Maria Diedrich and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1999-10-21 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays examines the forced dispossession caused by the Middle Passage. The book analyzes the texts, religious rites, economic exchanges, dance, and music it elicited, both on the transatlantic journey and on the American continent. The totality of this collection establishes a broad topographical and temporal context for the Passage that extends from the interior of Africa across the Atlantic and to the interior of the Americas, and from the beginning of the Passage to the present day. A collective narrative of itinerant cultural consciousness as represented in histories, myths, and arts, these contributions conceptualize the meaning of the Middle Passage for African American and American history, literature, and life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive in detail and worldwide in scope, Chirotheres is the definitive compendium of what is known about the five-toed footprints of Triassic archosaurs, ancestors of the crocodiles. Sandstone slabs with extensive trackways have been known for almost two centuries and are highlights in museum exhibits around the globe. These trackways provide direct insight into the locomotion and behavior of the fascinating reptiles that made these tracks, and, together with known skeletons, they allow a richer reconstruction of chirothere lifestyle than is possible from bones alone. Written by expert researchers in the fields of vertebrate ichnology, vertebrate paleontology, and scientific illustration, Chirotheres explores the various facets of chirothere research including the history of their study, footprint formation and preservation, the bone record, the environment and lifestyle of chirotheres, and finally, their disappearance at the end of the Triassic. Chirotheres also features a global compendium of track collections with chirothere material, including specimen numbers, detailed phylogenetic definitions of track makers, and extensive measurements from key chirothere tracks and trackways. It represents an invaluable resource of anyone interested in these ancient animals.
