Book excerpt: When Benton dreams, people die… Every time Benton sleeps, he becomes a trapped passenger within a murderer’s skin; able to hear, see, and feel every part of their kill. When he wakes up, he knows it’s only a matter of time before his dreams become reality. No matter how hard he tries to stop the murders, it always ends the same way – with death. After ten years of constantly relocating, his parents have decided to settle in Fort Wayward. A quiet Albertan town where Benton could focus on graduating high school and living an idyllic teenage life. That is, until he finds a dead body in his backyard. Benton’s hopes for normalcy come crashing down as something new begins stalking his dreams. Something that’s not human. And, for the first time, he’s not the only one watching. As his dreams and reality collide, Benton finds himself facing a monster beyond his understanding. In his fight for survival, Benton soon discovers why death follows him, why monsters draw close, and why he always wakes up screaming.

Book excerpt: Every night just a little after midnight screams echoed all through Castle Webly that were unbearable for any of the guests to get a good night’s rest. The owners of the castle forewarned any guests who stayed the night that blood-curdling screams would go on through the night until morning. The guests were also unaware that the owners Sir Arthur Webly and his wife Elizabeth were dead and buried in the family crypt. The reason Sir Arthur Webly and his wife Elizabeth were among the living dead was because of a guest at their party who was a vampire by the name of Count Drac Von Stoller the prince of darkness. Count Drac Von Stoller chose Elizabeth as his vampire bride and entered her room that night and bit her on the neck while the count was sucking the blood from her neck her husband had dozed off down in the kitchen while drinking some wine and woke up to a scream. He dashed upstairs to his bed chambers and burst through the bed chamber doors where his beautiful wife Elizabeth was sleeping and Count Drac Von Stoller turned around with blood dripping from his mouth and the two fought but Sir Arthur was no match for the Count and the Count bit Sir Arthur on the neck thus turning him into a vampire just like his wife Elizabeth and from that day forward Sir Arthur Webly and his wife Elizabeth roam the castle as the living dead looking for victims to quench their thirst for blood as well as the Count’s.

Book A Night of Screams

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movement of the old woman’s hands is quick and youthful as she works the dough for tamales on Mars’ dusty, dry surface where their cohete broke apart and crash landed. She, her husband and their only son survive, and the old man curses the coyotes who took his money for a rocket not built to accommodate his family of eleven. A storm is coming, and he rails at his wife that she’s wasting her time. “We’ll be dead by the time you finish your goddamn tamales.” This riveting collection of horror stories—and four poems—contains a wide range of styles, themes and authors. Creepy creatures roam the pages, including La Llorona and the Chupacabras in fresh takes on Latin American lore, as well as ghosts, zombies and shadow selves. Migrants continue to pass through Rancho Altamira where Esteban’s family has lived for generations, but now there are two types: the living and the dead. A young man returns repeatedly to the scary portal down which his buddy disappeared. A woman is relieved to receive multiple calls from her cousin following Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, but she is stunned to later learn her prima died the first night of the storm! There’s plenty of blood and gore in some stories, while others are mysterious and suspenseful. Contributors include Ann Davila Cardinal, V. Castro, Ruben Degollado, Richie Narvaez, Lilliam Rivera and Ivelisse Rodriguez. In his introduction, editor Richard Z. Santos writes it is no surprise these stories are brilliant and terrifying, given cartel violence, a history of CIA-backed dictatorships in Latin America, increasingly scary rhetoric from American politicians, decades of institutionalized racism and the demonization of Latinos in the media. “After all,” he says, “we are the faceless horde, invading zombies hellbent on upturning the world and replacing it with something foreign, accented and impossibly different.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping narrative history--the first in over twenty years--of America's first major offensive of World War II, the brutal, no-quarter-given campaign to take Japanese-occupied Guadalcanal From early August until mid-November of 1942, US Marines, sailors, and pilots struggled for dominance against an implacable enemy: Japanese soldiers, inculcated with the bushido tradition of death before dishonor, avatars of bayonet combat--close-up, personal, and gruesome. The glittering prize was Henderson Airfield. Japanese planners knew that if they neutralized the airfield, the battle was won. So did the Marines who stubbornly defended it. The outcome of the long slugfest remained in doubt under the pressure of repeated Japanese air, land, and sea operations. And losses were heavy. At sea, in a half-dozen fiery combats, the US Navy fought the Imperial Japanese Navy to a draw, but at a cost of more than 4,500 sailors. More American sailors died in these battles off Guadalcanal than in all previous US wars, and each side lost 24 warships. On land, more than 1,500 soldiers and Marines died, and the air war claimed more than 500 US planes. Japan's losses on the island were equally devastating--starving Japanese soldiers called it "the island of death." But when the attritional struggle ended, American Marines, sailors, and airmen had halted the Japanese juggernaut that for five years had whirled through Asia and the Pacific. Guadalcanal was America's first major ground victory against Japan and, most importantly, the Pacific War's turning point. Published on the 75th anniversary of the battle and utilizing vivid accounts written by the combatants at Guadalcanal, along with Marine Corps and Army archives and oral histories, Midnight in the Pacific is both a sweeping narrative and a compelling drama of individual Marines, soldiers, and sailors caught in the crosshairs of history.

Book excerpt: The iconic masterpiece of India that introduced the world to “a glittering novelist—one with startling imaginative and intellectual resources, a master of perpetual storytelling” (The New Yorker) WINNER OF THE BEST OF THE BOOKERS • SOON TO BE A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time • The fortieth anniversary edition, featuring a new introduction by the author Saleem Sinai is born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947, the very moment of India’s independence. Greeted by fireworks displays, cheering crowds, and Prime Minister Nehru himself, Saleem grows up to learn the ominous consequences of this coincidence. His every act is mirrored and magnified in events that sway the course of national affairs; his health and well-being are inextricably bound to those of his nation; his life is inseparable, at times indistinguishable, from the history of his country. Perhaps most remarkable are the telepathic powers linking him with India’s 1,000 other “midnight’s children,” all born in that initial hour and endowed with magical gifts. This novel is at once a fascinating family saga and an astonishing evocation of a vast land and its people–a brilliant incarnation of the universal human comedy. Forty years after its publication, Midnight’s Children stands apart as both an epochal work of fiction and a brilliant performance by one of the great literary voices of our time.

Book The Night Remembers

Download or read book The Night Remembers written by Ed Gorman and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ed Gorman has established himself as a writer whose "lean prose and deep compassion set his books apart from everything else in the genre," in the words of Loren D. Estleman. Now, in The Night Remembers, Gorman delivers his most powerful work to date, a book that at once pays homage to the great "noir" novels of the 1930s and '40s and expands upon that tradition. The time is the present; the setting Cedar Rapids, Iowa; the hero private detective Walsh, a man weary of a past he cannot escape. Walsh has recently retired from the sheriff's office, and he is preoccupied with wrenching personal turmoil. But Walsh's past won't leave him alone; it comes to visit him one day in the person of Lisa Pennyfeather, the wife of a man Walsh sent to prison for murder twelve years before. Lisa wants Walsh to clear her husband's name. Walsh is reluctant, but he is drawn into the case when a woman's corpse is discovered in the Pennyfeather's back yard a week after George Pennyfeather is released from prison. Is George being framed, and if so, was he framed twelve years before? Walsh, torn by the thought that he may have helped put an innocent man through twelve years of hell, starts looking for answers. Are George's former employees and family friends Paul and Richard Heckart as upstanding and compassionate as they appear? Was Lisa having an affair with low-life wheeler-dealer Karl Jankov, the man George was convicted of killing? Who was the woman found murdered in the Pennyfeather's back yard, and what was her connection to the Jankov murder? As Walsh delves deeper into the case, he discovers that things thought long buried can rear up suddenly, ominously, out of the night.

Book excerpt: Katherine Stone's magical touch makes A Midnight Clear a story for all seasons.”—Book Page Thunder sounded anew, closer now, an ominous rumbling, a ferocious growl. Both of them greeted the sound with gentle smiles. Then Jace spoke without smiling, but with such gentleness still, as lightning illuminated the night gray sky. “I think, Julia, that you are absolutely fearless.” “No, Jace. I’m not. On paper maybe I might seem that way. On plans conjured months in advance and an ocean away. But now that I’m here . . .” “I would be very happy to prove my point. By accompanying you to Canterfields.” “Really?” “Of course.” “I . . . yes. Thank you. That makes me feel safe.” Oh, Julia Anne Hayley, he thought, you are not safe with me. For him, love was a nightmare . . . Haunted by memories of a Christmas Eve inferno, trauma surgeon Jace Colton guards his solitude as fiercely and as passionately as he tends to the desperately injured who need his care. For her, love is an awakening . . . Julia Anne Hayley's memories are lovely, not haunting, a billowy cocoon in which she has hidden from life, from living, far too long. But she knows it is time to leave the solitary sanctuary that is her home, and, if she dares, to fly. Jace and Julia have six magical days—and nights—in London at Christmas. But their Christmastime enchantment is like a snowflake, delicate, perfect, and destined to die. The magic cannot possibly last . . . can it?
