Book excerpt: One of the most accomplished and prominent novels of the Victorian era, Middlemarch is an unsurpassed portrait of nineteenth-century English provincial life. Dorothea Brooke is a young woman of fervent ideals who yearns to effect social change yet faces resistance from the society she inhabits. In this epic in a small landscape, Eliot's large cast of precisely delineated characters and the rich tapestry of their stories result in a wise, compassionate, and astute vision of human nature. As Virginia Woolf declared, George Eliot "was one of the first English novelists to discover that men and women think as well as feel, and the discovery was of great artistic moment." Introduction by E. S. Shaffer (Book Jacket Status: Not Jacketed)

Book excerpt: George Eliot's novel, Middlemarch,, explores a fictional nineteenth-century Midlands town in the midst of modern changes during the Industrial Revolution.Instead of choosing to wed a wealthy landowner and settle for a comfortable life, Dorothea Brooke decides to marry Edward Casaubon-a dull scholar who is her senior by a few decades. Dorothea hopes the union will afford her with the opportunity to share in her husband's intellectual pursuits, but even her best efforts can't save the disastrous marriage. Meanwhile, idealistic doctor Tertius Lydgate has progressive ideas about the medical field, and he believes the village of Middlemarch is the place that will embrace his beliefs. But when he weds Rosamond Vincy, the mayor's beautiful daughter, his ideals come into stark contrast with his new bride's materialism and vanity, dooming their marriage from the start.Lastly, Rosamond's brother, Fred, is reluctantly destined for the Church. But his childhood sweetheart Mary Garth refuses to accept him until he settles into a more suitable career and one that interests him. But when circumstances lead to Fred losing a sizeable fortune that sets off a calamitous turn of events, he must reevaluate the choices he has made.

Book excerpt: Middlemarch George Eliot - Middlemarch, A Study of Provincial Life is a novel by the English author George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans). Set in a fictitious Midlands town from 1829 to 1832, it follows distinct, intersecting stories with many characters.Issues include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. Despite comic elements, Middlemarch uses realism to encompass historical events: the 1832 Reform Act, early railways, and the accession of King William IV. It views contemporary medicine and examines reactionary views in a settled community facing unwelcome change.Initial reviews were mixed, but it is now seen widely as her best work and one of the great novels in English.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Middlemarch a Study of Provincial Life, Vol. 1 of 2 It was hardly a year since they had come to live at Tipton Grange with their uncle, a man nearly sixty, of acquiescent temper, miscellaneous opinions, and uncertain vote. He had travelled in his younger years, and was held in this part of the county to have contracted a too rambling habit of mind. Mr Brooke's conclusions were as difficult to predict as the weather: it was only safe to say that he would act with benevolent intentions, and that he would spend as little money as possible in carrying them out. For the most glutinously indefinite minds enclose some hard grains of habit; and a man has been seen lax about all his own interests except the retention of his snuff-box, concerning which he was watchful, suspicious, and greedy of clutch. Book excerpt: Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life is a 1874 novel by English author George Eliot, the pen name of Mary Anne Evans. It is her seventh novel, begun in 1869 and then put aside during the final illness of Thornton Lewes, the son of her companion George Henry Lewes. During the following year Eliot resumed work, fusing together several separate stories into a coherent whole, and during 1871-72 the novel was serialized. A one-volume edition was published in 1874 and sold well. Subtitled "A Study of Provincial Life," the novel is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch, which is thought to be based on Coventry, during the period 1830-32. It has multiple plots with a large cast of characters and distinct, though interlocking narratives. The main themes, include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. The pace is leisurely, the tone is mildly didactic (with occasional authorial comment). Although Middlemarch has some comical elements, it is a work of realism. Through the voices and opinions of different characters we become aware of various issues of the day: the Great Reform Bill, the beginnings of the railways, the death of King George IV, and the succession of his brother, the Duke of Clarence (who became King William IV). The novel also provides insight into the state of contemporary medical science and the deeply reactionary mindset found within a settled community facing the prospect unwelcome change.

George Eliot published it in eight installments (volumes) between 1871 and 1872. Middlemarch, a fictional English Midlands town, served as the setting from 1829 to 1832, telling several unique, intertwining stories with numerous characters. The issues include women's rights, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. Middlemarch, despite its humorous features, uses realism to depict historical events such as the 1832 Reform Act, early railways, and King William IV's ascension. It examines historical medicine and reactionary ideas in a stable community confronting unpleasant change. Eliot began writing the two halves of the work in 1869-1870 and finished it in 1871. Despite mixed initial reviews, Eliot now universally regarded it as her best work and one of the great English novels. Mary Anne, or Marian, better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator, and one of the most prominent writers of the Victorian era.
