Download or read book Mid infrared Spectral Behavior of Sedimentary Rocks written by Graham R. Hunt and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mid-infrared (6- to 40-micrometer) spectra of sedimentary rocks and rock-forming minerals are presented. Molecular vibration bands are identified and the causes of spectral scatter among different samples of the same rock type are determined. It is concluded that mid-infrared spectra of sedimentary rocks are an excellent guide to their major mineral content. The chief drawback for terrestrial remote sensing of these rocks is that the major carbonate absorption band lies outside the atmospheric window. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mid-infrared (6 to 40 micrometers) spectra of metamorphic rocks and rock-forming minerals are presented, and their molecular vibration bands identified. While igneous and sedimentary rocks are typically composed of a few major rockforming minerals in different proportions, metamorphic rocks may contain many different mineral components, some of which are vertually unique to the metamorphic environment. As a result, metamorphic rocks display a great range in spectral behavior. However, similar metamorphic facies exhibit similar spectral behavior, and this behavior is readily understandable in terms of rock mineralogy. This understanding is aided by the fact that metamorphic recrystallization is usually accompanied by a sharpening of the spectral features.

Download or read book Workshop on Geological Applications of Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing Techniques written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Workshop on Geologic Applications of Remote Sensing to the Study of Sedimentary Basins was held January 10 to 11, 1985 in Lakewood, Colorado. Disciplines represented ranged from vertebrate paleontology to geophysical modeling of continents. Deliberations focused on geologic problems related to the formation, stratigraphy, structure, and evolution of foreland basins in general, and to the Wind River/Bighorn Basin area of Wyoming in particular. Geological problems in the Wind River/Bighorn basin area that should be studied using state-of-the-art remote sensing methods were identified. These include: (1) establishing the stratigraphic sequence and mapping, correlating, and analyzing lithofacies of basin-filling strata in order to refine the chronology of basin sedimentation, and (2) mapping volcanic units, fracture patterns in basement rocks, and Tertiary-Holocene landforms in searches for surface manifestations of concealed structures in order to refine models of basin tectonics. Conventional geologic, topographic, geophysical, and borehole data should be utilized in these studies. Remote sensing methods developed in the Wind River/Bighorn Basin area should be applied in other basins.

Download or read book Deserts and arid lands written by F. El-Baz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing is the study of a region from a distance, particularly from an airplane or a spacecraft. It is a tool that can be used in conjunction with other methods of research and investigation. This tool is especially applicable to the study of the deserts and arid lands of the Earth because of their immense size and their inaccessibility to detailed study by conventional means. In this book examples are given of the utility of aerial photographs and space images in the study of semi-arid, arid, and hyper-arid terrains. Emphasis is placed on the physical features and terrain types using examples from around the world. The authors I have called upon to prepare each chapter are renowned specialists whose contributions have received international recognition. To the general reader, this book is a review of our knowledge of the relatively dry parts of the Earth, their classification and varied features, their evolution in space and time, and their development potentials. To the specialist, it is a detailed account of the deserts and arid lands, not only in North America, but also their relatively unknown counterparts in North Africa, Australia, China, India, and Arabia.
