Book excerpt: We present the first systematic investigation of the [Ne v] (14 micron/24 micron) and [S III] (18 micron/33 micron) infrared line flux ratios, traditionally used to estimate the density of the ionized gas, in a sample of 41 type 1 and type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board Spitzer. The majority of galaxies with both [Ne v] lines detected have observed [Ne v] line flux ratios consistent with or below the theoretical low-density limit, based on calculations using currently available collision strengths and ignoring absorption and stimulated emission. We find that type 2 AGNs have lower line flux ratios than type 1 AGNs and that all of the galaxies with line flux ratios below the low-density limit are type 2 AGNs. We argue that differential infrared extinction to the [Ne v] emitting region due to dust in the obscuring torus is responsible for the ratios below the low-density limit and we suggest that the ratio may be a tracer of the inclination angle of the torus to our line of sight. Because the temperature of the gas, the amount of extinction, and the effect of absorption and stimulated emission on the line ratios are all unknown, we are not able to determine the electron densities associated with the [Ne v] line flux ratios for the objects in our sample. We also find that the [S III] emission from the galaxies in our sample is extended and originates primarily in star-forming regions. Since the emission from low-ionization species is extended, any analysis using line flux ratios from such species obtained from slits of different sizes is invalid for most nearby galaxies.

Book excerpt: "The dusty torus is the key component in the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) Unification Scheme that explains the spectroscopic differences between Seyfert galaxies of types 1 and 2. The torus dust is heated by the nuclear source and emits the absorbed energy in the infrared (IR); but because of light travel times, the torus IR emission responds to variations of the nuclear ultraviolet/optical continuum with a delay that corresponds to the size of the emitting region. The results from a mid-infrared (MIR) monitoring campaign using the Spitzer Space Telescope and optical ground-based telescopes (B and V band imaging), which spanned over 2 years and covered a sample of 12 Seyfert galaxies, are presented. The aim was to constrain the distances from the nucleus to the regions in the torus emitting at wavelengths of 3.6 [micron] and 4.5 [micron]. MIR light curves showing the variability characteristics of these AGN are presented and the effects of photometric uncertainties on the time-series analysis of the light curves are discussed. Significant variability was observed in the IR light curves of 10 of 12 objects, with relative amplitudes ranging from ~10% to ~100% from their mean flux. The 'reverberation lags' between the 3.6 [micron] and 4.5 [micron] IR bands were determined for the entire sample and between the optical and MIR bands for NGC6418. In NGC6418, the 3.6 [micron] and 4.5 [micron] fluxes lagged behind those of the optical continuum by 47.5 (+2.0,-1.9) days and 62.5 (+2.5,-2.9) days, respectively. This is consistent with the inferred lower limit to the sublimation radius for pure graphite grains at T=1800 K but smaller by a factor of 2 than the lower limit for dust grains with a 'standard' interstellar medium (ISM) composition. There is evidence that the lags increased following approximately by a factor of 2 increase in luminosity, consistent with an increase in the sublimation radius."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: The standard UnifiedModel (UM) of Active Galactic Nuclei, established 30 years ago, has been key to shed light in the taxonomy of such a heterogenous class of objects. Its basic premise is the ubiquitous presence of an obscuring torus around the central engine, so that the observed diversity simply reflects different viewing angles of an axisymmetric geometry. Consequently, type 1 AGNs are observed with a direct view of fast moving material close to the super massive black hole (SMBH), resulting in broad emission lines in their optical/UV spectra, while type-2 AGNs are observed from a more edge-on view, intercepting the obscuring torus that blocks the broad emission line region (BLR) component from our line of sight (LOS). This scheme was consolidated with the discovery of polarized broad emission lines (PBLs), also known as hidden broad-line regions (HBLRs), in the type 2 AGN, hence presenting the same properties as type 1 nuclei in polarized light. Nowadays, additional ingredients are likely needed to account for some observational facts that are apparently in conflict with the predictions. For instance, the UM predicts the absorbing torus as an homogeneous and uniform structure. There is broad evidence, especially at infrared wavelengths, that the dusty torus is indeed clumpy instead uniform. The general goal of this thesis is to endorse the current evidence for the clumplyness of the key element of the standard UM from other wavelengths: X-rays, UV and optical. To this end, we will focus on the study of the absorption variability performed by an interesting Seyfert galaxy: ESO 362-G18. This source gets our whole attention because it is usually classified as a type 1 AGN, however a spectrum retrieved from the 6 degree Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) shows the optical spectrum of ESO 362-G18 to lack its broad emission lines. This type 2 spectrum suggests ESO 362-G18 to be a changing look Seyfert galaxy. This rare type of sources represents a violation of the UMand probes that its corresponding classification is not only angle-dependent. Thus, we decided to start a deep multi-wavelength analysis of ESO 362-G18 to get as many complementary views as possible and approach the intriguing nature of this source...
