Book Microwave Emission from Polar Surfaces

Book excerpt: Based on the work described in this report, our observations and modeling work have revealed several considerations which are central to understanding the physical basis for the application and interpretation of thin ice algorithms for passive microwave imagery. We have shown that passive microwave measurements provide one of the most robust remote sensing techniques for distinguishing among sea ice types including the thin ice types that are pivotal for regional energy considerations. We have found that current theories applicable at microwave frequencies (multi layer SFT wave theory, for example) and in the visible and infrared (radiative transfer theory) can reproduce the radiation signatures of FY ice types quite well incorporating the actual physical structure of the ice. As a result of the cooperative work carried out during the electromagnetics ARI, the determination of the wavelength regions and physical situations appropriate for the application of various radiation models has been improved considerably, and our results, both theoretical and observational, have demonstrate the levels of accuracy of the models. It is clear that our understanding of the microwave emissivities of sea ice and their relation to other types of remote sensing signatures has increased significantly in the course of this grant.

Book Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology

Download or read book Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology written by Roger G. Barry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology provides the first comprehensive account of the dynamical behaviour and mechanisms of the global climate system and its components, together with a modern survey of synoptic-scale weather systems in the tropics and extratropics, and of the methods and applications of synoptic climate classification. It is unrivalled in the scope and detail of its contents. The work is thoroughly up to date, with extensive bibliographies by chapter. It is illustrated with nearly 300 figures and plates. *Part 1 provides an introduction to the global climate system and the space-time scales of weather and climate processes, followed by a chapter on climate data and their analysis *Part 2 describes and explains the characteristics of the general circulation of the global atmosphere and includes the nature and causes of global teleconnection patterns *Part 3 discusses synoptic weather systems in the extratropics and tropics and satellite-based climatologies of synoptic features. It also describes the applications of synoptic climatology and summarises current climatic research and its directions.

Book Microwave Emission from Polar Firn

Download or read book Microwave Emission from Polar Firn written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microwave emission from a half-space medium, characterized by coordinate dependent scattering and absorbing centers, was calculated by numerically solving the radiative transfer equation by the method of invariant imbedding. Rayleigh scattering phase functions and scattering induced polarization of the radiation were included in the calculation. Using the scattering and extinction data of polar firn the brightness temperature was calculated for the 1.55 cm wavelength. This study was the first quantitative comparison of the results of numerical calculation using the actual measured information of crystal size with the observed data. Chang, A. T. • Pages : 511 pages

Download or read book Polar Remote Sensing written by Robert Massom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polar Remote Sensing is a two-volume work providing a comprehensive, multidisciplinary discussion of the applications of satellite sensing. Volume 2 focuses on the ice sheets, icebergs, and interactions between ice sheets and the atmosphere and ocean. It contains information about the applications of satellite remote sensing in all relevant polar related disciplines, including glaciology, meteorology, climate and radiation balance and oceanogaraphy. It also provides a brief review of the state-of-the-art of each discipline, including current issues and questions. Various passive and active remote sensor types are discussed, and the book then concentrates on specific geophysical applications. Its interdisciplinary approach means that major advances and publications are highlighted. Polar Remote Sensing: Ice Sheets summarizes fundamental principles of detectors, imaging and geophysical product retrieval includes a chapter on the important new field of satellite synthetic-aperture radar interferometry is a "one stop shop" for polar remote sensing information contains significant new information on the Earth's polar regions describes sophisticated groundbased remote sensing applications with specific reference to their use in polar regions.

Download or read book Polar Remote Sensing written by Dan Lubin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polar regions, perhaps more than any other places on Earth, give the geophysical scientist a sense of exploration. This sensibility is genuine, for not only is high-latitude ?eldwork arduous with many locations seldom or never visited, but there remains much fundamental knowledge yet to be discovered about how the polar regions interact with the global climate system. The range of opportunities for new discovery becomes strikingly clear when we realize that the high latitudes are not one region but are really two vastly di?erent worlds. The high Arctic is a frozen ocean surrounded by land, and is home to fragile ecosystems and unique modes of human habitation. The Antarctic is a frozen continent without regular human habitation, covered by ice sheets taller than many mountain ranges and surrounded by the Earth’s most forbidding ocean. When we consider global change as applied to the Arctic, we discuss impacts to a region whose surface and lower atmospheric temperatures are near the triple point of water throughout much of the year. The most consistent signatures of climate warming have occurred at northern high latitudes (IPCC, 2001), and the potential impacts of a few degrees increase in surface temperature include a reduction in sea ice extent, a positive feedback to climate warming due to lowering of surface albedo, and changes to surface runo? that might a?ect the Arctic Ocean’s salinity and circulation.

Book Atlas of Satellite Observations Related to Global Change

Download or read book Atlas of Satellite Observations Related to Global Change written by Robert J. Gurney and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-11-25 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global environmental change is one of the most pressing international issues of the next century. There is a need to monitor the Earth's vital signs, from atmospheric ozone to tropical deforestation to sea level change. Models used to predict global changes have not yet fully used global observational data sets. Satellite data sets will be vital in addressing global change issues, in determining natural variability and monitoring global and regional changes. This timely volume provides an illustration of the variety of satellite-derived global data sets now available, their uses, advantages and limitations, and the range of variation that has already been observed with these data. A team of distinguished contributors provide a highly illustrated and accessible account suitable for the general scientific reader.
