The book then goes on to look at issues including the structure and financing of microtrade, e-commerce, government procurement, and the fair trade movement’s possible relationship with microtrade. . The final part of the book considers empirical case studies of microtrade with agricultural products. The book shows how microtrade, if effectively administered on a global scale, can do much to end extreme poverty.

It is argued and demonstrated that issues of reaction processes and attention are closely interconnected. Their common conceptualization can be seen in terms of limited processing capacity on the one hand, and stage analysis on the other. This volume concludes that, at present, a stage analysis metaphor offers better prospects as a conceptual starting point; the limited capacity metaphor was strongly tied to the digital computers of the 60s. The emphasis of the book is on behavioral research, but summaries of related findings on evoked potentials and other psychophysiological variables are included as well. From this perspective, it may be of interest to neuropsychologists who want to learn about the present state of cognitive experimental paradigms. Elements of Human Performance also addresses the question of the relationship between basic research and applications in the said areas. This is particularly urgent in view of the now common notion that the results of many simplified laboratory tasks may be artifactual and of little applied value. A back-to-back research strategy is outlined to assess the validity of basic research results for real-life tasks.

Book excerpt: Microtrade is a mechanism to support development in the least developed states (“LDCs”) through the creation of a mechanism, structure, and organization that will facilitate small scale international trade from LDCs into more developed markets. Microtrade facilitates this through leveraging the lower labor costs in the LDCs, demand in more developed markets, and through collaborative and voluntary efforts to minimize the costs of shipping and other barriers to such small scale trading ventures. In so doing, there will be a whole host of conflicting legal cultures that may stand in the way of effective implementation of microtrade policies, though direct conflict or indirect conflict simply through attitudes and approaches that either undermine or do not support the different aspects of microtrade. The different legal cultures will belong to the varied participants within the LDCs, within the international organizations and fields that would be involved, and even within the developed states that will be the ultimate destination for microtrade products. While the difference between those legal culture issues will often serve as obstacles, sometimes they may preset opportunities that could enhance microtrade projects. Consequently, this chapter will identify many of the specific areas of potential conflict between the different legal cultures that are present throughout the different fora and communities involved in microtrade -- a legal culture impact analysis. Once identified it may then be possible to ameliorate any negative impact resulting from those conflicts. This chapter will, for the most part, focus on identifying the primary conflicts between the legal cultures that would be relevant to microtrade. Such identifications is the significant first step in eventually resolving any conflicts in order to ensure microtrade may work to best effect. This chapter will also provide a few examples of the mechanisms that could be employed to counteract or resolve those conflicts.

Errors are extensively used to in vestigate perception, memory, and performance; some clinicians study errors like tea leaves for clues to unconscious motives; and this volume presents the work of researchers who, in an excess of perversity, actually cause people to make predictable errors in speech and action. Some reasons for this oddity are clear. Errors seem to stand at the nexus of many deep-psychological questions. The very concept of error presupposes a goal or criterion by comparison to which an error is an error; and goals bring in the foundation issues of control, motivation, and volition (Baars, 1987, 1988; Wiener, 1961). Errors serve to measure the quality of performance in learning, in expert knowledge, and in brain damage and other dysfunctional states; and by surprising us, they often call attention to phenomena we might otherwise take for granted. Errors also seem to reveal the "natural joints" in perception, language, memory, and problem solving-revealing units that may otherwise be invisible (e. g. , MacKay, 1981; Miller, 1956; Newell & Simon, 1972; Treisman & Gelade, 1980).
