Book Microsurgical Reconstruction of the Extremities

Download or read book Microsurgical Reconstruction of the Extremities written by Leonard Gordon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On April 23, 1906, Alexis Carrel presented his manuscript entitled "The Surgery of Blood Vessels" to the Johns Hopkins Medical Society. His work on the tech nique of small vessel anastomosis and the transplantation of visceral organs earned him the Nobel Prize in 1912. The use of magnification in operative surgery began in 1921 with the work of Nylen, who first employed the microscope for reconstructive procedures in the middle ear. Jacobson and Suarez published their initial observa tions on the use of microsurgery for the anastomosis of small vessels in 1960, and two years later, Malt reported the historic replantation of an upper extremity. To surgeons involved in reconstruction of the extremities, the evolution of micro surgery has provided the most significant advances of the past three decades. The dramatic clinical successes of replantation surgery and free tissue transfer have substantially improved functional and cosmetic results in addition to decreas ing morbidity in patients who present with complex reconstructive problems. Mi crosurgical Reconstruction of the Extremities crosses the traditional surgical discip lines and will be invaluable to orthopaedic surgeons, plastic surgeons, hand sur geons, and general surgeons, as well as to residents and fellows.

Book Advances in Upper and Lower Extremity Microvascular Reconstructions

Download or read book Advances in Upper and Lower Extremity Microvascular Reconstructions written by F. Schuind and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances made in microsurgical techniques during the last three decades have dramatically improved the treatment of complex limb injuries, such as a closed fracture covered by healthy tissue and a complex open fracture of the tibia. Microvascular transfers from the foot have revolutionized the treatment of digital amputations, and vascularized bone transfers are used in various indications. The microvascular techniques are still evolving. Many imaginative new flaps are being proposed to meet precisely the functional requirements of the various defects. Alternative anastomotic techniques are being investigated and the no-flow phenomenon has been extensively studied. Allotransplantation may be feasible in the future. This unique book is a result of the exchange of ideas among clinicians of various specialties noted for their innovations and basic researchers involved with the problems of microvascular reconstruction of upper and lower extremities. While most of the chapters are invited contributions, some are based on presentations made during an international symposium held in Brussels, Belgium, in 1997.

Book Path Breaking Work in Plastic and Reconstructive Microsurgery

Download or read book Path Breaking Work in Plastic and Reconstructive Microsurgery written by Doina Dumitrescu-Ionescu and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Path-Breaking Work in Plastic and Reconstructive Microsurgery by Dr. Doina Dumitrescu-Ionescu was reviewed by David Soutar for The Royal College of Surgeons of England: “This is a refreshingly original and unusual text. It is a testament to the life work of the author and her struggle to develop clinical microsurgery in Romania. It takes the reader on a journey starting with learning the basic techniques of microsurgery, laboratory and experimental research, teaching and training. It then progresses to the building of an infrastructure for development and clinical practice, the maintenance of meticulous records and the evaluation of results. As such, the book is a very personal account written in an informal style so that the reader can follow the author’s own development and experience. “The format is unusual, beginning with the author’s philosophy for developing reconstructive microsurgery. It then covers personal techniques developed for peripheral nerve repairs and microvascular anastomosis. It is clear from early on in this book that the author’s main interest lies in the management of peripheral nerves, particularly in the limbs. There is a section on reconstructive microsurgery of the brachial plexus following trauma and a section on limb replantation.” Says the author, “The reconstructive microsurgery experience helped me to modernize reparative plastic surgery in Romania in reconstructive plastic surgery and reconstructive microsurgery by radically changing the surgical approach.” This allowed also for new procedures in Dupuytren’s Disease, Volkmann, and post-burn contractures approach, “revolutionizing everything that was repair surgery of any extremity, cephalic, superior, inferior, but also the extension of reconstructions in the large defects of suprascheletal soft parts.”

Book excerpt: This practical and generously illustrated text presents the current concepts regarding the management of the mangled extremity, including microsurgery, vascular surgery, free tissue, nerve, hand, and replantation surgery. Since the advent of microsurgical reconstruction, significant progress has been made in the areas of replantation, free tissue transfer, as well as the refinement of skeletal fixation techniques. The scope will encompass the initial triage of a patient with a mangled upper or lower extremity, the initial and subsequent reconstructive efforts, to include skeletal fixation, vascular and soft tissue reconstruction, muscle and tendon transfers, psychological impact, therapy requirements, amputation considerations, and current data on salvage versus amputation in these scenarios. Case examples will be included to add further depth and context to the techniques and recommendations provided. Presenting these surgical challenges in detail, The Mangled Extremity will be an ideal resource for orthopedic and trauma surgeons, residents and fellows, as well as emergency surgeons facing these intense, traumatic injuries.

Book excerpt: The second edition of Operative Plastic Surgery is a fully-updated, comprehensive text that discusses the most common plastic surgery procedures in great detail. It covers the classic techniques in plastic surgery, as well as the most recent technical advances, while maintaining a systematic approach to patient care within each chapter. Traversing the entirety of the human body, each chapter addresses assessment of defects, preoperative factors, pathology, trauma, operative indications and procedure, and more. Led by Gregory R.D. Evans, this volume assembles thought leaders in plastic surgery to present operative surgery in a clear, didactic, and comprehensive manner, and lays the groundwork for ideas that we have just scratched the surface of, such as translational research, fat grafting, stem cells, and tissue engineering.
