Download or read book Solidification Processing of Metal Matrix Composites written by Nikhil Gupta and published by Wiley-TMS. This book was released on 2006-11-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Solidification Processing of Metal Matrix Composites" (MMCs) focuses primarily on microcomposites but also covers macrocomposites, nanocomposites and foams. There are four main areas detailed: fundamentals of solidification synthesis, which examines issues related to stir mixing, pressure infiltration, transfer of particles or fibers through gas-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces, and particle/fiber interactions with fluids; processing and microstructures, which focuses on microstructure formation during solidification of MMC under different conditions, such as nucleation, growth, heat transfer, microsegregation, macrosegregation and interactions between solidifying interfaces, particles and fibers; and, properties of solidification processing, covering the relationship between the microstructures and properties. Comparisons are made between properties of solidification processed composites and monolithic and composites made by solid and vapor phase processes. It also details the application of solidification processed MMCs, revealing current and future applications especially in automotive, aerospace, railroad, thermal management, electromechanical machinery and recreational equipment sectors.

Book Semi solid Processing of Alloys

Download or read book Semi solid Processing of Alloys written by David H. Kirkwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semisolid metallurgy (SSM) is now some 37-years-old in terms of time from its conception and ?rst reduction to practice in the laboratory. In the intervening years, there has been a steadily growing body of research on the subject and the beginning of signi?cant industrial applications. The overall ?eld of SSM comprises today a large number of speci?c process routes, almost all of which fall in the category of either “Rheocasting” or Thi- casting.” The former begins with liquid metal and involves agitation during partial solidi?cation followed by forming. The latter begins with solid metal of suitable structure and involves heating to the desired fraction solid and forming. Research over the past 37 years, and particularly over the last decade, has provided a detailed picture of process fundamentals and led to a wide range of speci?c SSM processes and process innovations. Industrial studies and actual p- duction experience are providing a growing picture of the process advantages and limitations. At this time, the conditions for eventual wide adoption of SSM appear favorable, both for nonferrous and ferrous alloys. It must, however, be recognized that major innovations, such as SSM become adopted only slowly by industries where capital costsarehigh, pro?tmarginsaremodest, andfailuretomeetcustomercommitments carries a high penalty.

There was seven sessions each opened with a lecture by an invited guest speaker. Sessions 1-4, covered two days of the conference and focused mainly on Processing Technologies of Rapid Solidification and Thermodynamic Properties (Practical Applications). Sessions 4-6 concentrated on Thermodynamics of Metastable Alloys, Relaxation, Diffusion, Magnetic and Electric Properties (Fundamentals). Session 6 was devoted to the Structural Characterization of Supercooled Melts, Ultra Fine Polycrystalline Materials (New Innovations and Techniques). There were two equally important aspects of this NATO/ARW conference which must be mentioned. Book Solidification Analysis of Metal Matrix Composites Aluminium 11 8 Silicon Alloy Reinforced with Titanium Carbide Particulates

Download or read book Solidification Analysis of Metal Matrix Composites Aluminium 11 8 Silicon Alloy Reinforced with Titanium Carbide Particulates written by Nanang Fatchurrohman and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composite is a material system composed of a mixture or combination of two or more constituents that differ in form and chemical composition and which are essentially insoluble in each other. Metal matrix composites (MMC) are engineered materials composed of an elemental or alloy as a matrix in which an insoluble second phase reinforcer is embedded and distributed to achieve property improvement. Application of MMC comprises a broad range in aircraft, automotive, defence technology and astronautics components. The performance during its work life of MMC is determined by the mechanical properties. The mechanical properties of MMC are linked to microconstituents formed and its characteristics. For MMC processed by casting method, the solidification behaviour will determine the type of microconstituents formed and its properties. In this study, casting via vortex mixing method is employed to produce MMC aluminium-11.8% silicon alloy (LM6) reinforced with different volume percentages (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25%) of titanium particulates (TiCp) cast using sand and copper moulds. Temperature measurements during cooling and solidification are used as the main source to analyse solidification properties (fraction solid and latent heat generation) using Fourier thermal analysis method. A metallographic study is performed to observe the particulates distribution and microconstituents present. A hardness test is carried out, the results show that 25% volume addition of TiCp cast using copper mould has the best result. This result correspond to the improved microstructure as particulates are well distributed in the matrix which can be seen on the photomicrographs. From the visual observation of photomicrographs, the increment addition of particulates will promote more nucleation sites and grain size is reduced due to faster solidification of casting using copper mould (high heat extraction capacity). For production using sand mould the maximum mean value of hardness 54.38 Rockwell number is reached by addition of 25% volume content TiCp , solidification time (fraction solid equals to 1) at 195 seconds and volumetric latent heat generated 245.63 103kJ/m3. The best result is obtained by fabrication of LM6-TiCp MMC using copper mould (permanent die), the maximum mean value of hardness 76.82 Rockwell number is reached by addition of 25% TiCp volume content, solidification time (fraction equals to 1) at 5 seconds (fastest) and volumetric latent heat generated 100.77 kJ/m3. From the results, it is concluded that casting of LM6-TiCp MMC is successfully achieved using vortex mixing technique and that addition of particulates influence solidification characteristics which in turn affect the properties of the MMC.

Book Solidification

Download or read book Solidification written by Jonathan A. Dantzig and published by EPFL Press. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solidification is one of the oldest processes for producing complex shapes for applications ranging from art to industry, and remains as one of the most important commercial processes for many materials. Since the 1980s, numerous fundamental developments in the understanding of solidification processes and microstructure formation have come from both analytical theories and the application of computational techniques using commonly available powerful computers. This book integrates these developments in a comprehensive volume that also presents and places them in the context of more classical theories. This second edition highlights the key concepts within each chapter to help guide the reader through the most important aspects of the topics. The figures are now in color, in order to improve the visualization of phenomena and concepts. Recent important developments in the field since the first edition was published have also been added. The three-part text is aimed at graduate and professional engineers. The first part, Fundamentals and Macroscale Phenomena, presents the thermodynamics of solutions and then builds on that subject to motivate and describe equilibrium phase diagrams. Transport phenomena are discussed next, focusing on the issues of most importance to liquid-solid phase transformations, then moving on to describing in detail both analytical and numerical approaches to solving such problems. The second part, Microstructure, employs these fundamental concepts for the treatment of nucleation, dendritic growth, microsegregation, eutectic and peritectic solidification, and microstructure competition. This part concludes with a chapter describing the coupling of macro- and microscopic phenomena in microstructure development. The third and final part describes various types of Defects that may occur, with emphasis on porosity, hot tearing and macrosegregation, presented using the modeling tools and microstructure descriptions developed earlier.
