Book excerpt: Generating much interest in both academic and scientific circles, Gemini Surfactants gathers the most up-to-date research in gemini surfactantproduction and demonstrates how their propertiesand performance can revolutionize the current industrial application of these surfactants. It surveys the state of special gemini surfactants, including nonionic, zwitterionic, fluorinated, and amino-acid-based surfactants. Gemini Surfactants considers the synthesis, phase behavior, and rheology of gemini and related surfactants and clarifies the adsorption and surface tension behavior of gemini surfactants at air–water, oil–water, and solid–water interfaces. The book also details the physicochemical properties and microstructure of aqueous micellar solutions of gemini surfactants and describes mixed micellization between gemini surfactants and conventional surfactants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume chronicles the proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution (SIS) held in Gainesville, FL, June 10-15, 1990. This series of symposia have been smoothly running since 1976, but the appellation "Surfactants in Solution" was used for the first time in 1982 in Lund. Since then our logo "SIS" has become very familiar to everyone involved in surfactants. In Lund the meeting was billed as the Fourth International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution. Earlier three events were held under different rubrics, but proceedings of all these symposia, except the 7th SIS held in Ottawa in 1988, have been properly documented. As a matter of fact so far 10 volumes have appeared under the title "Surfactants in Solution". 1,2,3 The program for the 9th SIS was very comprehensive and many ramifications of surfactants were covered, and it was a veritable international event. It contained a total of 384 papers by 869 authors from practically every corner of our planet. Just the sheer number of papers is a testimonial to the high tempo of research and tremendous interest in this wonderful class of materials. As in the past, there were plenary lectures (5), invited talks (37), oral presentations (195) and poster presentations (147). The plenary lectures were given by Prof. J. Th. G. Overbeek, Prof. C. A. Bunton, Prof. H. Ti Tien and Dr. J. Swalen. The lecture by Prof. Overbeek, the doyen of surface and colloid science, was a real treat.

Book Surfactants in Solution

Download or read book Surfactants in Solution written by K.L. Mittal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This and its companion Volumes 5 and 6 document the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution held in Bordeaux, France, July 9-13, 1984. This symposium was the continuation of the series of symposia initiated in 1976 in Albany, New York under the title "Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions". The next two symposia were labelled "Solution Chemistry of Surfactants" and "Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects" held in Knoxville, TN in 1978 and Potsdam, N. Y. in 1980, respectively. In 1982 at the time of the 4th Symposium in this series, it became amply evident that there was a definite need to have more a generic title to describe these biennial events, and after much deliberation it was decided that an appropriate title would be "Surfactants in Solution" as both the aggregation and adsorption aspects of surfactants were addressed. So the 4th Symposium was held in 1982 in Lund, Sweden, under this new rubric, and it was decided to continue these symposia in the future under this appellation. Naturally, the Bordeaux Symposium was dubbed as the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution, and our logo became SIS which is very apropos and appealing. It was in Bordeaux that the decision was made to hold the 6th SIS Symposium in New Delhi and it is scheduled for August 18-22, 1986 in the capital of India.

Book Microstructure and Rheology of Mixed Ionic Surfactants

Download or read book Microstructure and Rheology of Mixed Ionic Surfactants written by Kate R. Hollabaugh and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal care products are complex blends of several surfactants which are typically anionic, zwitterionic and nonionic. Formulations are often created with little understanding of the interactions between these different types of surfactants. Here a model system comprised of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), and cocomonoethanolamide (CMEA) represents the industrial surfactant blend almeo. The effect of the addition of a zwitterionic surfactant, tegobetaine, to this blend was investigated. An understanding of the phase behavior of the four component mixture was gained by building up the complexity of the mixture one surfactant at a time. Nested ternary and pseudo-ternary phase maps were created to determine the phase boundary for the dilute one phase isotropic region that is useful for formulation. The nonionic surfactant in almeo, CMEA, greatly affected the overall phase behavior of the mixture, decreasing the one phase isotropic region of phase space. Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) was used to probe the microstructures present in the dilute one phase region and to understand the structural evolution that occurs upon addition of tegobetaine. The effect of these structural parameters on the bulk solution properties was established using rheology. Rheology was also used to characterize the dynamics and material properties of the wormlike micelle solutions that exist at higher surfactant concentrations. Wormlike micelle (WLM) solutions of sufficient length and concentration will entangle, which leads to viscoelasticity. Alternatively, branching can lead to the formation of a viscoelastic network. The viscoelasticity of these WLM solutions makes them relevant from a wide range of applications ranging from personal care products to oil drilling. Scaling relationships for properties of WLM exist, which are useful in product development. However, these relationships were developed for linear entangled micelles, not branched networks, and the effect of branching is unknown. Here neutron spin echo (NSE) was used to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of both entangled and branched WLM solutions and how they relate to the bulk and network properties.

Book CRC Handbook of Phase Equilibria and Thermodynamic Data of Aqueous Polymer Solutions

This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large amount of experimental data has been published since the debut of the original CRC Handbook of Thermodynamic Data of Aqueous Polymer Solutions. Incorporating new and updated material, the CRC Handbook of Phase Equilibria and Thermodynamic Data of Aqueous Polymer Solutions provides a comprehensive collection of thermodynamic data of polymer solutions. It helps readers quickly retrieve necessary information from the literature, and assists researchers in planning new measurements where data are missing. A valuable resource for the modern chemistry field, the Handbook clearly details how measurements were conducted and methodically explains the nomenclature. It presents data essential for the production and use of polymers as well as for understanding the physical behavior and intermolecular interactions in polymer solutions.
