Book excerpt: The high cycle fatigue behavior of three advanced unidirectionally solidified nickel-base eutectic alloys has been studied. AG-170, strengthened by Alpha-Mo fibers, and brittle carbide reinforced Nitac 14B and Cotac 744 were tested in vacuum under axial tension-tension, sinusoidal loading at 20 Hz. Fatigue properties of the as D.S. and heat treated conditions were examined at both 25 deg C and 825 deg C. In addition, the effects of reduced frequency on the high temperature fatigue life of aged Nitac 14B have been determined. Fatigue resistance of the as D.S. material decreased between 25 deg C and 825 deg C. This has been related to a variation in the mode of cracking. Room temperature failures were surface initiated and propagation proceeded along crystallographic planes, wheras Stage II crack propagation was observed at 825 deg C. Nitac 14B was shown to be superior at both temperatures owing to its high matrix strength and large Gamma' volume fraction. The elevated temperature fatigue life of aged Nitac 14B was substantially reduced at low test frequencies in vacuum. The decrease in frequency caused a shift from surface initiated failure to an almost featureless fracture surface where the initiation, fatigue, and overload zones were not easily identified. Reduced specimen life was postulated to be the result of enhanced creep.

The underlying theme is an analysis of the different paths taken by the liquid-solid transformation as the cooling rate increases and a description of the structure and properties of the solid formed, ranging from equilibrium to metastable phase formation in castings, to metallic glass formation in splat quenched ribbons. This text has seven chapters; the first of which describes the main characteristics of the liquid-solid transformation. The chapters that follow show how control over composition, trace impurities, heat flow and cooling rate, and nucleation and growth gives rise to a wide range of solidification structures. Models of the nucleation and growth of eutectic and primary phases are analyzed and used to explain how cast microstructures are formed. Aluminum casting alloys and all types of cast iron are discussed, along with primary phase formation, the dependence of the extent of segregation on solidification conditions, and the practice of segregation prevention during solidification. This book also describes the importance of fluid flow in producing macroscopic segregation in large ingots and considers ways of minimizing this defect. Finally, this book gives a brief account of the various types of metallic glasses, their fabrication, important properties, and potential applications. This book will be of interest to materials scientists and industrial materials engineers.

Book excerpt: Room temperature four-point-bending fatigue studies of the unidirectionally solidified Ni-Ni3Cb eutectic composite have been conducted to better understand fatigue behavior in composite materials. Fatigue crack propagation (FCP) data for this eutectic composite alloy revealed a power relationship between the stress intensity factor range and the crack growth rate from 10-7 to 10-4 in./ cycle. This application of fracture mechanics concepts to FCP data represents the first such reported information of its kind for eutectic composites. Fatigue behavior of this eutectic alloy was found to be sensitive to solidification parameters, thermal history, and the mean stress intensity level.
