Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Influence of Microstructure and Microdamage Processes on Fracture at High Loading Rates

Download or read book Influence of Microstructure and Microdamage Processes on Fracture at High Loading Rates written by J. H. Giovanola and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optimal use of advanced beta and near-beta titanium alloys in situations involving dynamic or shock loading requires an understanding of the influence of microstructure and loading rate on fracture behavior. To address this need, SRI is performing dynamic crack initiation and propagation experiments on Ti-1OV-2Fe-3Al in three microstructural conditions, varying the loading rate to establish the rate-dependence of the fracture toughness. A new experimental method developed in a previous Air Force Office of Scientific Research program (the one point bend impact test) and numerical simulations of the experiments are used to determine dynamic initiation and propagation toughness. Further, the fracture surface topography analysis (FRASTA) technique is applied to the fractured specimens to elucidate the microstructural failure mechanisms controlling fracture in each of the investigated microstructures. Keywords: Microstructure, Dynamic fracture, Initiation toughness, Propagation toughness, Titanium alloys, Iron alloys, Aluminum alloys.

Book Adaptive Multi level Model for Multi scale Ductile Fracture Analysis in Heterogeneous Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Adaptive Multi level Model for Multi scale Ductile Fracture Analysis in Heterogeneous Aluminum Alloys written by Daniel Paquet and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Cast aluminum alloys and discontinuously reinforced aluminums (DRAs) are widely used in automotive, aerospace, nuclear and other engineering systems due to their advantageous strength-to-density ratio. Their microstructure is characterized by a dispersion of hard and brittle heterogeneities in a softer aluminum matrix. These microstructural heterogeneities increase the strength of the alloys, but also affect their failure properties like fracture toughness and ductility in an adverse manner. Important micromechanical damage modes that are responsible for deterring the overall failure properties include inclusion cracking, followed by ductile matrix failure due to void initiation, growth and coalescence. The complex interaction between competing damage modes makes failure and ductility prediction for these materials quite challenging. Sensitivity studies performed in this work with the locally enhanced Voronoi cell finite element method (LE-VCFEM) show a strong influence of microstructure morphology on ductile failure of microstructural domains. Unfortunately, micromechanical analysis of microstructural regions at the scale of structural components are prohibitive due to the enormous number of heterogeneities in the underlying microstructure.

Book Experiments and Modeling of Fatigue and Fracture of Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Experiments and Modeling of Fatigue and Fracture of Aluminum Alloys written by James Brian Jordon and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, understanding the microstructural effects of monotonic and cyclic failure of wrought 7075-T651 and cast A356 aluminum alloys were examined. In particular, the structure-property relations were quantified for the plasticity/damage model and two fatigue crack models. Several types of experiments were employed to adapt an internal state variable plasticity and damage model to the wrought alloy. The damage model was originally developed for cast alloys and thus, the model was modified to account for void nucleation, growth, and coalescence for a wrought alloy. In addition, fatigue experiments were employed to determine structure-property relations for the cast alloy. Based on microstructural analysis of the fracture surfaces, modifications to the microstructurally-based MultiStage fatigue model were implemented. Additionally, experimental fatigue crack results were used to calibrate FASTRAN, a fatigue life prediction code, to small fatigue-crack-growth behavior. Lastly, a set of experiments were employed to explore the damage history effect associated with cast and wrought alloys and to provide motivation for monotonic and fatigue modeling efforts.

Book A Fracture Mechanics Study of Corrosion Fatigue

Download or read book A Fracture Mechanics Study of Corrosion Fatigue written by R. A. M. Chandra Prasad and published by . This book was released on 2022-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Majority of industrial components fail due to the conjoint actions of fatigue and corrosion. All fatigue failures including one in air can be categorized as corrosion fatigue. Absolute fatigue can take place only in vacuum or inert environment. The effect of corrosion on fatigue has been extensively studied by determining the stress vs. number of cycles (S-N) curve. S-N curve depicts the final fracture, it does not separate the crack initiation and crack propagation. The defect tolerant design based on fracture mechanics concepts assumes that some forms of defects are already present in the materials and a considerable life in spent in crack propagation before the final fracture. Measure of resistance of a material to crack growth (fracture toughness) then becomes extremely important. It is now possible to describe material property of fracture toughness in terms of applied intensity of stress near the crack tip (K). Fracture mechanics based on elastic material behavior (absence of significant yielding) , referred to as the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is well suited to materials which have limited ductility. The stress intensity factor (K ) is used both for conditions of static loading (Stress Corrosion Cracking) and for the moving cracks during fatigue loading . In this book the results of corrosion fatigue crack growth on 7075 - Alclad alloy are presented. This alloy is widely used in aircraft and automobile industries. Corrosion resistance is obtained by cladding with a more corrosion resistant aluminum alloy. However, the corrosion protection system may undergo rupture especially during crack growth in the underlying metal. Environment will then play a dominant role in the crack growth process. The design of reliable aircraft structures requires provision that cracks do not propagate under cyclic loading to reach a critical size resulting in fracture. The understanding of crack propagation under the conjoint action of corrosion and fatigue is thus of great technological and economic significance. Conflicting observations have been reported in literature regarding the influence of microstructure and environmental variables on the corrosion crack propagation rates.
