Book Microstructural Evolution in a Ferritic martensitic Stainless Steel and Its Relation to High temperature Deformation and Rupture Models

Download or read book Microstructural Evolution in a Ferritic martensitic Stainless Steel and Its Relation to High temperature Deformation and Rupture Models written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ferritic-martensitic stainless steel HT-9 exhibits an anomalously high creep strength in comparison to its high-temperature flow strength from tensile tests performed at moderate rates. A constitutive relation describing its high-temperature tensile behavior over a wide range of conditions has been developed. When applied to creep conditions the model predicts deformation rates orders of magnitude higher than observed. To account for the observed creep strength, a fine distribution of precipitates is postulated to evolve over time during creep. The precipitate density is calculated at each temperature and stress to give the observed creep rate. The apparent precipitation kinetics thereby extracted from this analysis is used in a model for the rupture-time kinetics that compares favorably with observation. Properly austenitized and tempered material was aged over times comparable to creep conditions, and in a way consistent with the precipitation kinetics from the model. Microstructural observations support the postulates and results of the model system. 16 refs., 10 figs.

Book Microstructural based Modeling Framework for High Temperature Behavior of Ferritic Martensitic Steels Using Crystal Plasticity and Grain Boundary Finite Element Approaches

Download or read book Microstructural based Modeling Framework for High Temperature Behavior of Ferritic Martensitic Steels Using Crystal Plasticity and Grain Boundary Finite Element Approaches written by Omar Mohd Nassif and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferritic/martensitic 9-12Cr steel alloys, have had widespread use as structural materials in power plants. Among this family of alloys, Grade 91 (Gr91) steel was a landmark in the development of 9-12Cr alloys. However, the unique microstructure complexity of the alloy has raised doubt regarding the techniques of data extrapolation in estimating its service-life for operation in next-generation power plants at higher temperatures and presssures. Conservatism becomes essential when the alloy is to be used in components lasting the life-cycle of power plants without replacement. This dissertation develops a physically-based microstructural model for creep rupture at 600 degrees Celsius for Gr91 steel as well as fundamental modeling tools that apply more broadly to microstructural modeling in metals. Key features of the Gr91 modeling framework capture the mechanical behavior of its prior austenite grains (PAG) and grain boundaries. Ultimately, a constitutive expression was adopted that captured the response from experiments conducted in the creep strain rate regime. An initial model intended to simulate low-cycle fatigue was first developed using the idea of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) in crystal plasticity (CP) framework. That necessitated evaluating strain gradients and a patch-recovery method was implemented to recover a linear elastic deformation gradient field across the domain in linear elements. A Lie-group to Lie-algebra mapping was used to preserve orthogonality when projecting the rotation tensor from the elements' Gauss points to the nodes. A statistically-stored dislocation density model was investigated to span the regimes of moderate strain rates (tension tests) to low strain rates (creep tests). Calibration of this model was possible against tension tests, but its application to creept tests suggested that other dislocation mechanisms were present during the primary creep regime of Gr91. Therefore, the CP model in the PAGs was changed to represent dislocation climb-glide motion and recovery along with linear viscous diffusional creep for point defect diffusion. This revised model more closely captured the measurements of creep response. Lastly, a robust Discontinuous Galerkin method is proposed to model the grain boundary interface elements to address traction oscillations observed for cohesive models. Stability and convergence are assessed along with non-conforming meshes.

Book Evolution of Microstructure during Long term Creep of a Tempered Martensite Ferritic Steel

Download or read book Evolution of Microstructure during Long term Creep of a Tempered Martensite Ferritic Steel written by Ali Aghajani Bazazi and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2009-12-08 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tempered martensite ferritic steels are used for critical components in fossil fired power plants that operate in the creep range. The materials contain a high density of dislocations and precipitates form on all types of internal interfaces, the majority of which represent subgrain boundaries. Most previous studies suffer from either only relating to short term creep experiments or from being incomplete in not considering all relevant elements of the microstructure. No systematic effort was made to investigate the evolution of microstructures under conditions of long term creep. In the present study the evolution of the microstructure of a 12% Cr tempered martensite ferritic steel was investigated under conditions of long term aging and creep. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) techniques were used to characterize materials from interrupted creep tests (0.5%, 1%, 1.6% and rupture at 11.9%; creep conditions: 550°C, 120 MPa, rupture time: 139 971 h). It is shown that subgrains coarsen, that the close correlation between carbides and subgrain boundaries loosens during long term creep, and that the frequency of small angle boundaries increases. In addition, the evolution of dislocation densities during long term aging and creep was studied using high angle annular dark field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). During aging the dislocation density remains constant, while during long term creep the dislocation density continuously decreases. All these elementary deformation processes have already been discussed in short term creep studies. The present study shows that they also govern long term creep, however, during long term creep, precipitation and coarsening reactions occur which are not observed during short term creep. Cr rich M23C6, VX carbides and Laves phase were identified as the major precipitates in the microstructure of the 12% Chromium tempered martensite ferritic steel. Their chemical compositions, sizes, volume fractions and number densities were evaluated in all interrupted specimens. M23C6 particles coarsen and establish their equilibrium concentration after 51072 hours. VX particles are stable. The Laves phase particles do not reach thermodynamic equilibrium as they form and grow during long term creep. This is due to Silicon which is found in the Laves phase particles and which diffuses slowly in the steel matrix.

Book Creep and High Temperature Deformation of Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Creep and High Temperature Deformation of Metals and Alloys written by Stefano Spigarelli and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the late 1940s, and since then, the continuous development of dislocation theories have provided the basis for correlating the macroscopic time-dependent deformation of metals and alloys—known as creep—to the time-dependent processes taking place within the metals and alloys. High-temperature deformation and stress relaxation effects have also been explained and modeled on similar bases. The knowledge of high-temperature deformation as well as its modeling in conventional or unconventional situations is becoming clearer year by year, with new contemporary and better performing high-temperature materials being constantly produced and investigated. This book includes recent contributions covering relevant topics and materials in the field in an innovative way. In the first section, contributions are related to the general description of creep deformation, damage, and ductility, while in the second section, innovative testing techniques of creep deformation are presented. The third section deals with creep in the presence of complex loading/temperature changes and environmental effects, while the last section focuses on material microstructure–creep correlations for specific material classes. The quality and potential of specific materials and microstructures, testing conditions, and modeling as addressed by specific contributions will surely inspire scientists and technicians in their own innovative approaches and studies on creep and high-temperature deformation.

Book Comprehensive Nuclear Materials

Download or read book Comprehensive Nuclear Materials written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-07-22 with total page 4871 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials in a nuclear environment are exposed to extreme conditions of radiation, temperature and/or corrosion, and in many cases the combination of these makes the material behavior very different from conventional materials. This is evident for the four major technological challenges the nuclear technology domain is facing currently: (i) long-term operation of existing Generation II nuclear power plants, (ii) the design of the next generation reactors (Generation IV), (iii) the construction of the ITER fusion reactor in Cadarache (France), (iv) and the intermediate and final disposal of nuclear waste. In order to address these challenges, engineers and designers need to know the properties of a wide variety of materials under these conditions and to understand the underlying processes affecting changes in their behavior, in order to assess their performance and to determine the limits of operation. Comprehensive Nuclear Materials, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides broad ranging, validated summaries of all the major topics in the field of nuclear material research for fission as well as fusion reactor systems. Attention is given to the fundamental scientific aspects of nuclear materials: fuel and structural materials for fission reactors, waste materials, and materials for fusion reactors. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource of information. Most of the chapters from the first Edition have been revised and updated and a significant number of new topics are covered in completely new material. During the ten years between the two editions, the challenge for applications of nuclear materials has been significantly impacted by world events, public awareness, and technological innovation. Materials play a key role as enablers of new technologies, and we trust that this new edition of Comprehensive Nuclear Materials has captured the key recent developments. Critically reviews the major classes and functions of materials, supporting the selection, assessment, validation and engineering of materials in extreme nuclear environments Comprehensive resource for up-to-date and authoritative information which is not always available elsewhere, even in journals Provides an in-depth treatment of materials modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on nuclear issues Serves as an excellent entry point for students and researchers new to the field

Book High Temperature Fatigue Behaviour of Austenitic Stainless Steel

Download or read book High Temperature Fatigue Behaviour of Austenitic Stainless Steel written by Hugo Wärner and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global energy consumption is increasing and together with global warming from greenhouse gas emission, create the need for more environmental friendly energy production processes. Higher efficiency of biomass power plants can be achieved by increasing temperature and pressure in the boiler section and this would increase the generation of electricity along with the reduction in emission of greenhouse gases e.g. CO2. The power generation must also be flexible to be able to follow the demands of the energy market, this results in a need for cyclic operating conditions with alternating output and multiple start-ups and shut-downs. Because of the demands of flexibility, higher temperature and higher pressure in the boiler section of future biomass power plants, the demands on improved mechanical properties of the materials of these components are also increased. Properties like creep strength, thermomechanical fatigue resistance and high temperature corrosion resistance are critical for materials used in the next generation biomass power plants. Austenitic stainless steels are known to possess such good high temperature properties and are relatively cheap compared to the nickel-base alloys, which are already operating at high temperature cyclic conditions in other applications. The behaviour of austenitic stainless steels during these widened operating conditions are not yet fully understood. The aim of this licentiate thesis is to increase the knowledge of the mechanical behaviour at high temperature cyclic conditions for austenitic stainless steels. This is done by the use of thermomechanical fatigue- and creepfatigue testing at elevated temperatures. For safety reasons, the effect of prolonged service degradation is investigated by pre-ageing before mechanical testing. Microscopy is used to investigate the microstructural development and resulting damage behaviour of the austenitic stainless steels after testing. The results show that creep-fatigue interaction damage, creep damage and oxidation assisted cracking are present at high temperature cyclic conditions. In addition, simulated service degradation resulted in a detrimental embrittling effect due to the deterioration by the microstructural evolution.

Book Microstructurally Based Modeling of Creep Deformation and Damage in Martensitic Steels

Download or read book Microstructurally Based Modeling of Creep Deformation and Damage in Martensitic Steels written by Christof Sommitsch and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter deals with modeling the microstructural evolution, creep deformation, and pore formation in creep-resistant martensitic 9,Äì12% Cr steels. Apart from the stress and temperature exposure of the material, the input parameters for the models are as-received microstructure and one single-creep experiment of moderate duration. The models provide predictive results on deformation rates and microstructure degradation over a wide stress range. Due to their link to the underlying fundamental physical processes such as classical nucleation theory, Gibbs energy dissipation, climb, and glide of dislocations, etc., the models are applicable to any martensitic steel with similar microstructure to the presented case study. Note that we section the chapter into part 1: creep deformation and part 2: pore formation.
