Book Microstructural Effect on the Resistivity of Thin Silver Films

Download or read book Microstructural Effect on the Resistivity of Thin Silver Films written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin silver films were deposited using the partially ionized beam deposition technique. It was found that the resistivity of the films is strongly dependent on the incident ion energy used during film growth. The observed resistivity trend exhibits a minimum that is near the bulk value for silver. The x-ray fiber texture analysis technique was used to determine the microstructure of the films. The change in resistivity is shown to be correlated with film microstructure through the change in the fraction of grains whose surface normals are oriented randomly with respect to the substrate normal. The electronic grain boundary reflection coefficient, as extracted from the model of Mayadas and Shatzkes, is shown to also vary with the microstructure.

Book Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films 1992

Download or read book Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films 1992 written by G.E. McGuire and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the increasingly important requirements for high technology materials is that they possess near-surface properties different to their bulk properties. Specific surface properties are generally achieved through the use of these films or coatings or by modifying the structure or composition of the near surface. This two-volume work contains 157 papers covering a wide range of topics involving films, coatings, and modified surfaces. All aspects of the development of deposition technologies are addressed including basic research, applied research, applications development and full scale industrial production. The work will be of interest to materials scientists, physicists, electronic, chemical and mechanical engineers, and chemists.

Book Small Scale Structures

Download or read book Small Scale Structures written by N.F. de Rooij and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of 3 symposia dealing with various aspects of small scale structures. Symposium A deals with the development of new materials, including ceramics, polymers, metals, etc., their microstructuring as well as their potential for application in microsystems. All kinds of microsystems are considered, e.g. mechanical, magnetic, optical, chemical, biochemical and issues related to assembly and packaging were also covered.Symposium B deals with four topics: synthesis and preparation of nanostructured ceramics and composites with well-controlled geometric order and chemical composition; coupling of these structures to transducers for current and future chemical and biochemical devices based upon microoptics, microelectronics, microionics, microelectrodes or molecular cages; planar thin film structures and the control of covalent thin film/transducer couplings, the control of selective, stable and sensitive recognition centers at the surface, at grain boundaries or in the bulk of selected nanostructured materials with extremely narrow particle size distributions; analysis of these structures and sensor functions by means of techniques utilizing photons, electrons, ions, or atomic particle beam probes.Symposium E examines the structure-property relationships in thin films and multilayers, from the point of view of both fundamental studies and practical applications.

Functional properties of thin film oxides are discussed in the context of applications in emerging electronics and renewable energy technologies. Readers will find a detailed description of deposition and characterization of metal oxide thin films, theoretical treatment of select properties and their functional performance in solid state devices, from leading researchers. Scientists and engineers involved with oxide semiconductors, electronic materials and alternative energy will find Thin Film Metal-Oxides a useful reference.

Book Engineering Aspects of Shape Memory Alloys

Download or read book Engineering Aspects of Shape Memory Alloys written by T W Duerig and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering Aspects of Shape Memory Alloys provides an understanding of shape memory by defining terms, properties, and applications. It includes tutorials, overviews, and specific design examples—all written with the intention of minimizing the science and maximizing the engineering aspects. Although the individual chapters have been written by many different authors, each one of the best in their fields, the overall tone and intent of the book is not that of a proceedings, but that of a textbook. The book consists of five parts. Part I deals with the mechanism of shape memory and the alloys that exhibit the effect. It also defines many essential terms that will be used in later parts. Part II deals primarily with constrained recovery, but to some extent with free recovery. There is an introductory paper which defines terms and principles, then several specific examples of products based on constrained recovery. Both Parts III and IV deal with actuators. Part III introduces engineering principles while Part IV presents several of the specific examples. Finally, Part V deals with superelasticity, with an introductory paper and then several specific examples of product engineering.

Book The Effect of Temperature on the Texture Transformation in Silver Thin Films

Download or read book The Effect of Temperature on the Texture Transformation in Silver Thin Films written by Rekha Victoria King and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well-established that certain FCC thin films undergo a thickness dependent (111)to-(100) texture transformation. This phenomenon has been attributed to a competition between strain and surface energies, but this model fails to acknowledge the presence of stable mixed texture films, and is found to be insensitive to annealing temperature. Grain boundary grooving is considered as a mechanism for these stable mixed textures. We investigated the role of annealing temperature in the (111)-to-(100) texture transformation over a range of film thicknesses. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the transformation rate and the surface evolution over time. The extent of texture transformation and grain boundary grooving both exhibited a temperature dependence; high temperatures induced less transformation and more grooving than lower temperatures. Slow thermal cycling yielded the maximum extent of transformation, suggesting low annealing temperatures and heating rates as necessary conditions to produce groove-free, large-grained stable microstructures.

Book Nanostructured Surfaces and Thin Films Synthesis by Physical Vapor Deposition

Download or read book Nanostructured Surfaces and Thin Films Synthesis by Physical Vapor Deposition written by Rafael Alvarez and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue deals with the synthesis of nanostructured surfaces and thin films by means of physical vapor deposition techniques such as pulsed laser deposition, magnetron sputtering, HiPIMS, or e-beam evaporation, among others. The nanostructuration of the surface modifies the way a material interacts with the environment, changing its optical, mechanical, electrical, tribological, or chemical properties. This can be applied in the development of photovoltaic cells, tribological coatings, optofluidic sensors, or biotechnology to name a few. This issue includes research presenting novel or improved applications of nanostructured thin films, such as photovoltaic solar cells, thin-film transistors, antibacterial coatings or chemical and biological sensors, while also studying the nanostructuration mechanisms, from a fundamental point of view, that produce rods, columns, helixes or hexagonal grids at the nanoscale.
