Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the role of government policy in economic development in the Republic of Korea. The Republic of Korea has achieved economic success on many fronts. Real GNP has tripled every decade since the 1960s. A dynamic and flexible manufacturing sector now dominates the economy. The benefits of growth have been widely distributed, with a sharp decrease in poverty. This study, like others in the series, seeks to draw lessons from such success and to identify and analyze the policies behind this strong economic performance. Koreas development strategy and macroeconomic performance are outlined in Part I. Several factors are seen to underlie strong growth, including the maintenance of a stable macroenvironment, flexible and pragmatic policies, and investment in infrastructure and human capital. Part II assesses the role played by industrial policy since 1961. Particular attention is given to the Heavy and Chemical Industry (HCI) drive, launched in 1973 to diversify and upgrade Koreas industrial sector. The authors note that while the HCI has been largely successful, it also has been very costly, particularly to the financial sector. Part III outlines the role of institutions and the close relationships among the government, the bureaucracy, and business. The key to Koreas rapid development, according to the authors, was the governments commitment to growth and its early focus on equity and wide distribution of the gains from growth. The authors also laud the efficiency and effectiveness of Koreas public and private sector institutions, which they see as models for all developing nations.

Book Current State of the Art Electrical and Security Engineering Design

Download or read book Current State of the Art Electrical and Security Engineering Design written by Harry Zackrison and published by Page Publishing, Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three primary goals that this book wishes to achieve: (1) Herein is the most prevalent standardized electrical calculations for use in reducing redundancy in the work effort, reducing repetitive errors, and freeing up more time for productive and innovative and imaginative engineering solutions. (2) Providing a standardized checklist worksheet for field survey work of existing conditions to help facilitate obtaining all the necessary materials the first time around and without errors and omissions. And (2) the maximum security achievable for our highly classified facilities that we are dependent upon for our survival. Four secondary goals we wish to achieve are (1) various methods for conserving energy and resources, (2) the evaluation of life cycle of energy-saving design techniques and equipment selection, (3) the use of a standardized value engineering (VE) guide when performing value engineering workshops, and (4) employing various A and E, VE methods that can be employed for reducing first costs, operating costs, and life cycle costs (LCCs), all the while conserving energy and resources.

Book Photonic Band Gaps and Localization

Download or read book Photonic Band Gaps and Localization written by C.M. Soukoulis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Localization and Propagation o[ Classical Waves in Random and Periodic Media held in Aghia Pelaghia, Heraklion, Crete, May 26- 30, 1992. The workshop's goal was to bring together theorists and experimentalists from two related areas, localization and photonic band gaps, to highlight their common interests. The objectives of the workshop were (i) to assess the state of-the-art in experimental and theoretical studies of structures exhibiting classical wave band gaps and/or localization, (ii) to discuss how such structures can be fabricated to improve technologies in different areas of physics and engineering, and (iii) to identify problems and set goals for further research. Studies of the propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves in periodic and/or disordered dielectric structures (photonic band gap structures) have been and continue to be a dynamic area of research. Anderson localization of EM waves in disordered dielectric structures is of fundamental interest where the strong ei-ei interaction efFects entering the eIectron-localization are absent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Experimental Chemistry provides techniques of qualitative analysis that reinforce experiments on ionic equilibriums. This book includes the determination of water in hydrated salts; identification of an organic compound after determining its molecular weight; and nonaqueous titration of a salt of a weak acid. The calculation of chemical stoichiometry; calculation of thermodynamic properties by determining the change in equilibrium with temperature; and chromium chemistry are also covered. This compilation contains enough experiments for classes which have six hours of laboratory (two 3-hour meetings) per week to last two semesters. This publication is intended for chemistry students as an introductory manual to chemistry laboratory.

Book Measuring Distribution and Mobility of Income and Wealth

Download or read book Measuring Distribution and Mobility of Income and Wealth written by Raj Chetty and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-11-16 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Economic research on the efficient allocation of resources has a long history. Increasingly, attention has turned to inequality in the distribution of personal resources and outcomes, and whether individuals or children are locked in their respective places in this distribution or whether mobility is possible. Research focuses not only on measuring inequality and mobility, but on understanding its historical, economic, and social determinants, and how policies might affect these distributions. This volume explores the latest developments in our understanding of income and wealth distribution and mobility. The first section addresses observed patterns of income inequality and shifts in compensation and fluidity that drive or reinforce income inequality. The next focuses on wealth inequality, including the difficulties of defining and measuring wealth. The third section presents new evidence on the intergenerational transmission of inequality and the mechanisms that sustain these patterns. A fourth set of chapters studies the mitigation of inequality, including variations in intervention strategies across time and geography. Finally, issues related to using national accounting data in comparison with survey and microdata are examined. Lack of data, particularly wealth data at the individual or household level in most countries, presents a challenge. Momentum has been building to link multiple sources of survey, administrative and other data in order to mitigate measurement problems in single sources and to provide more comprehensive data on income and wealth"--
