Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Microscopic Study of the Silver Ores and Their Associated Minerals: A Dissertation Submitted to the Department of Geology and Mining and to the Committee on Graduate Study of the Leland Standford Junior University in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The increasing amount of Space devoted by many of the jour nals to investigations in which the reflecting microscope is em ployed, is sufficient evidence of the great value of this new method of attack in the solution of problems of paragenesis of the opaque minerals. That these researches are confined so largely to the investigation of the copper sulphides and associated minerals is the occasion of some surprise. Although in a more or less gen eral way it has been appreciated that the replacements concerned in the process of co-pper enrichment are common phenomena of nature, yet the fact that these processes may, in their complexity and interest, 'be duplicated in the deposition of silver minerals, has failed to receive the emphasis it deserved. This is due in part to the greater scarcity of silver minerals and also to the greater difficulty involved in their identification. More-over, the applica tion of these methods to Copper deposits has 'been a significant factor in the solution of economic problems, and. Has thus acted as a stimulus for extended researches in those fields. This stage of development has not yet been realized for the silver ores. Windle, a conference was held at the National Institutes of Health, the proceedings of which, edited by Dr. Windle and published by C. C. Thomas under the title "New Research Tech niques of Neuroanatomy", rapidly became something like a standard reference in the field of Neuromorphology. The present editors were emboldened to seek support for a second expose of contemporary research methods in Neuroanatomy by the success of this earlier publication, as well as by the consideration that the years elapsed since its appearance have been, perhaps, more productive of new research methods and strategies in Neuroanatomy than were any dozen consecutive years since the golden decades of the 1870's and 1880's. The decision, which methods to include in this conference, has been a difficult one. For reasons of space alone it would have been impossible to do equal justice to techniques approaching the brain as a neuronal system, the brain as a tissue, or the neuron as a cell. As a brief inspection of the contents of this volume will show, the weight of choice fell upon the first of these alternatives. The reader will find, further more, that not all of the book is devoted to new methods in the strict sense.

The combination of morphology and immunology resulted in immunocytochemistry; morphology and molecular biology led to in situ hybridization and in situ PCR. Adding computer science to morphology gave birth to image analysis. Combining laser technology and the microsope evolved into confocal microscope. For more than a decade, modem morphology has continued to develop by merging with other disciplines at a rate that is still gathering momentum, providing exciting and dynamic new frontiers for other biological fields. "Modem Methods in Analytical Morphology," based largely on the "First International Workshop on Modem Methods in Analytical Histochemistry, "is an updated review of the current trends in the field.
