Download or read book Microsatellite Screening in Pacific Halibut Hippoglossus Stenolepis and a Preliminary Examination of Population Structure Based on Observed DNA Variation written by Lorenz Hauser and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Details the initial steps of a study examining the population structure of the eastern Pacific halibut stock. Methods discussed include optimization of a suite of dionucleotide microsatellites and application of those markers in a preliminary analysis of gene frequencies from three sites representing the edges of the geographic range of the stock.

Download or read book Fishers Knowledge in Fisheries Science and Management written by Nigel Haggan and published by United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization. This book was released on 2007 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a number of case studies from around the world, this publication considers how the local knowledge and practices of indigenous fishing communities are being used in collaboration with scientists, government managers and non-governmental organisations to establish effective frameworks for sustainable fisheries science and management. It seeks to contribute towards achieving the goal of establishing international responsibility for the ethical collection, preservation, dissemination and application of fishers' knowledge.
Download or read book The Pacific Arctic Region written by Jacqueline M. Grebmeier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Arctic region is experiencing rapid sea ice retreat, seawater warming, ocean acidification and biological response. Physical and biogeochemical modeling indicates the potential for step-function changes to the overall marine ecosystem. This synthesis book was coordinated within the Pacific Arctic Group, a network of international partners working in the Pacific Arctic. Chapter topics range from atmospheric and physical sciences to chemical processing and biological response to changing environmental conditions. Physical and biogeochemical modeling results highlight the need for data collection and interdisciplinary modeling activities to track and forecast the changing ecosystem of the Pacific Arctic with climate change.
Download or read book The Mechanics and Physiology of Animal Swimming written by L. Maddock and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-09-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together current research on a wide range of swimming organisms, with an emphasis on the biomechanics, physiology and hydrodynamics of swimming in or on water. Several chapters deal with different aspects of fish swimming, from the use of different 'gaits' to the operation of the locomotor muscles. All chapters are by recognised authorities in their different fields, and all are accessible to biologists interested in aquatic locomotion.

Download or read book Blood Types in Pacific Salmon written by George J. Ridgway and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intraspecific differences in erythrocyte antigens (blood types) were shown to occur in four species of Pacific salmon, the sockeye or red salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), the chinook or king salmon (O. tshawytscha), the chum salmon (O. keta), and the pink salmon (O. gorbuscha). Antisalmon-erythrocyte sera prepared in rabbits and chickens were used after absorption of species-specific antibodies. Some of these blood types were shown to differ in their frequency of occurrence between different geographic races. In addition, isoimmunizations were prepared and at least eight different patterns of antigenic composition were displayed by the cells tested. These results indicate that considerable antigenic diversity exists in salmon. Reagents to detect valuable markers for the investigation of geographic races of salmon should be obtained through further research.
