Book Micropulsation Observations of the Auroral Oval Boundary

Download or read book Micropulsation Observations of the Auroral Oval Boundary written by Elwood Maple and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the sub-auroral-zone latitude (+54 degrees geomagnetic) of the AFCRL field station, geomagnetic micropulsations associated with the auroral oval are observed only during large nighttime disturbances. Hourly amplitudes of the horizontal component of the micropulsations in octave period bands in the 0.5 to 1024 sec period range are used as measures of the activity. Near local midnight, consistently small values are observed with local K indices

Book The Auroral Oval and the Scintillation Boundary

Download or read book The Auroral Oval and the Scintillation Boundary written by Jules Aarons and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition or boundary between high- and low-amplitude ionospheric fluctuations has been examined as a function of time. The boundary of the scintillation curtain reaches its lowest latitude (54 degrees geomagnetic north) between 1930 and 2230 local time. The most northerly boundary latitude of approximately 80 degrees Gn occurs during the 1030 to 1330 local standard time period. General agreement is demonstrated between observations of Transit IVA at 54 MHz at a subauroral site, Explorer 22 (S-66) at 40 MHz at three sites, and the main zone of discrete auroral events shown by other workers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of geomagnetic micropulsations has developed extremely rapidly and it is difficult to know when is an appropriate time to pause and assess the sum total of our knowledge-both observational and theoretical. There has in recent years been a tremendous increase in both the quantity and quality of data and also many theoretical ad vances in our understanding of the phenomenon. Undoubtedly there will be further progress in both areas but it seems worthwhile now to review both our knowledge and our ignorance. This book was essen tially completed by the end of April 1969 and tries to give a summary of the subject up to that time. The Earth is enclosed in the magnetosphere, a hollow carved out of the solar wind by the Earth's magnetic field. Above the ionosphere there is a very tenuous thermal plasma of partially ionized hydrogen in diffusive equilibrium with magnetic and gravitational forces, and ener getic protons and electrons that constitute the trapped Van Allen ra diation belts. Throughout this anisotropic and inhomogeneous plasma, natural and man-made electromagnetic energy propagates in a wide variety of modes and frequency bands. This book is concerned with that class of natural signals called geomagnetic micropulsations-short period (usually of the order of seconds or minutes) fluctuations of the Earth's magnetic field.

Book Convection and Substorms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles F. Kennel
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1996-02-08
  • ISBN : 0195359070

Download or read book Convection and Substorms written by Charles F. Kennel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-02-08 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnetosphere is the region where cosmic rays and the solar wind interact with the Earth's magnetic field, creating such phenomena as the northern lights and other aurorae. The configuration and dynamics of the magnetosphere are of interest to planetary physicists, geophysicists, plasma astrophysicists, and to scientists planning space missions. The circulation of solar wind plasma in the magnetosphere and substorms have long been used as the principle paradigms for studying this vital region. Charles F. Kennel, a leading scientist in the field, here presents a synthesis of the convection and substorm literatures, and an analysis of convection and substorm interactions; he also suggests that the currently accepted steady reconnection model may be advantageously replaced by a model of multiple tail reconnection events, in which many mutually interdependent reconnections occur. Written in an accessible, non-mathematical style, this book introduces the reader to the exciting discoveries in this fast-growing field.
